I was born in Goldsboro and my family moved to Fayetteville when I was three years old. Although a city boy for most of the year, I spent my summers barning tobacco, picking cucumbers, and helping care for 80,000 turkeys on my uncles farm in Duplin County. This was a formative part of my life and taught me the value of hard work and dedication.
Pursuing this new dream, I received a scholarship from the Air Force to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry. While there, I met and married the love of my life, Lee. We were both in school and graduated on the same day I with my Doctorate of Dental Surgery, magna cum laude, in 2003, and Lee with her Master of Social Work and Master of Public Health.
The day after graduation, we moved to San Antonio so I could complete my residency in periodontics and implant dentistry with the Air Force and the University of Texas. After graduating in 2006, we moved to Eglin AFB, Florida, so I could teach in a graduate residency program. While there, we were blessed to welcome our two sons into the world, Jack and Ben. I also began working part-time for the Carolina Center and realized that we could have a happy life in New Bern.
In 2011, we received orders to Spangdahlem, Germany. We spent four wonderful years living and working overseas, where I provided periodontal and implant services to members of our military and their families.
However, after almost two decades in the Air Force, home called, and we made the difficult decision to leave the Air Force in 2015 so we could begin our new life in eastern North Carolina. I look forward to living and working in this community for many years to come.

The Carolina Center for Dental Implants and Periodontics presents an environment that caters to easy communication and interactions between our staff and patients. On a yearly basis, we routinely attend and participate in 100 to 200 hours of continuing education. We are also committed to sharing our knowledge and experiences with other dental specialists, dentists, and the public in the form of lectures and programs. Our commitment to education focuses on both personal and professional growth, which results in providing patients with the most predictable and current proven strategies in the delivery of our services.
Dr. McDonough specializes in full-service periodontics and implant placement. He is board certified by the American Board of Periodontology, and has extensive experience as both a clinician and educator. While in the Air Force, Dr. McDonough served as an instructor in the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency program at Eglin Air Force Base, training other Air Force dentists in advanced procedures.
In addition, he has attended courses nationally and internationally, including the Master Course for Esthetic Implants at the highly respected Center for Continuing Dental Education in Bern, Switzerland. From highly personalized service to comfortable IV sedation options, Dr. McDonough and our caring team deliver the treatment you need, when you need it most.
We strive to make your visits with us as comfortable and pleasant as possible. Our New Bern dental office strongly believes that our patients comfort and well-being are an integral part of quality dental care, and we offer oral and IVlevels of sedation to facilitate this goal.

I had severe tooth pain and I was able to get an appointment quickly for them to assess my condition. I found the staff and Dr. McDonough to be very empathetic to my situation. They took care of me and now I'm feeling much better thanks to the great medical team. I highly recommend their services!

Dr McDonough and staff are wonderful! He explained everything in detail and very patiently answered any questions I had. My implant process is taking longer than expected, but I appreciate that he is using every precaution to make sure I have the best results possible. The office seems to be very efficient without making patients feel rushed. I would recommend Carolina Dental Implants to anyone!! I drive an hour and 45 minutes and it is worth every minute I spend in the road!!
