Bone grafting is a procedure we offer to replace lost bone tissue. This may be required when the bone deteriorates after tooth loss in order to place a dental implant. Many other conditions may also lead to bone loss and necessitate a bone graft. In addition to replacing missing jawbone, a bone graft also helps to promote new bone growth in that location.

  • Autogenous bone grafts Also called autografts, autogenous bone grafts are created from your own bone that is taken from another part of the body. Bone for the graft is typically taken from the chin, lower leg bone, hip, jaw or skull. Autografts contain living cellular elements that enhance bone growth. One downside to autogenous bone grafts, however, is that a second procedure is required to harvest bone from elsewhere in the body.
  • Allogenic bone grafts Sometimes called an allograft, an allogenic bone graft uses dead bone taken from a cadaver that is freeze dried via a vacuum to extract the water. Unlike autogenous bone grafts, allogenic grafts cannot produce new bone and only serves as a framework over which bone from the surrounding areas can grow.
  • Xenogenic bone grafts Xenogenic bone is derived from non-living bone of another species (often a cow). The bone tissue is processed at very high temperatures to avoid potential immune rejection and contamination. Like an allogenic bone graft, the xenogenic bone serves as a scaffold for bone from the surrounding areas to grow into.
  • Allogenic and xenogenic bone grafts do not require a second procedure to harvest bone from your own body, but the disadvantage is that these options lack autografts bone-forming properties. Dr. Cannon will help you determine which type of bone graft is best for your specific needs.

  • Demineralized bone matrix (DBM)/Demineralized Freeze-Dried Bone Allograft (DFDBA) This is processed allograft bone that contains collagen, growth factors and proteins that are extracted from the allograft bone. DBMs or DFDBAs are available in the form of putty, powder, chips, or injectable gels.
  • Graft composites A graft composite is created from other bone graft materials and growth factors to include the benefits of a variety of substances. Some combinations for a graft composite may include collagen/ceramic composite, DBM with bone marrow cells, or a collagen/ceramic/autograft composite.

Dr. Cannon was awesome! He did a wonderful job extracting two teeth. He called that night to check on me which I thought very kind. I had a stitch that was cutting my jaw, so I went in the office to see if they could just snip off the end that was poking me. The office staff were not the most pleasant. Two of the staff started whispering about me when they left my treatment room like a couple of Jr. high girls. I could hear what they were saying, and I found their behavior to be extremely unprofessional and unethical. Dr. Cannon was great, but I'm not sure I will return to his office because of his unprofessional staff; and by no means am I speaking about all his staff. Most were great.

Simply the best!!! I have been to dentists and oral surgeons, but never ever receive the level of care that I received at Cannon oral surgery. The nurse JJ that took me all the way through my procedure and followed up with me through the weekend after my procedure is an amazing caring wonderful nurse, she calmed my fears and helped me through a difficult time. Dr Cannon is the best oral surgeon in this or any other city. He is knowledgeable answers every question you might have, makes the procedure painless and easy, listens to your concerns, and falls up with you after the procedure. I have never seen such a high level of care in any other setting. I would strongly suggest you go here for your dental / oral surgeon needs as these people are the best. I have never had such fantastic care and I thank them all so very much, definitely go here first this is the only place to go!!!!! Thank you JJ and thank you Dr Cannon so very much

My daughter had to get all 4 wisdom teeth pulled. We had read the great reviews so we picked Cannon. From the first phone call to the several phones we made asking questions to the very end they were very nice. Pleasant friendly staff, nice clean waiting area. Michaela had Brooke assist Dr Cannon. She was great! Called them after we left and spoke to Morgan because Michaela said she felt stitches, and we weren't sure, Morgan reassured her it would be fine but if they bothered her after a few days to come back in and they will trim them. We highly recommend Cannon Oral Surgery.

My experience with Dr. Cannon and his team was excellent! This was the first time I've had a surgery that required going under and they made me feel safe and comfortable. Dr. Cannon and the nurse who assisted were friendly and calming and I've been healing really well! If I ever have to get anymore tooth surgeries I will definitely go here again. :)

We will never use this dr again... and make sure you get a print out of your quote because they add an extra $300 to my sons bill when I sent him with my daughter in law to his appointment and then said they could not give him a print out of what work was done on his teeth.....

I had all my 4 wisdom taken out. Procedure went smoothly and post procedure soreness wasn't too bad. Only suggestion- may need to improve on the detail instructions and directions given to the patient and/or family.
