With a father who practiced restorative dentistry for 40 years and a mother who practiced dental hygiene for 42 years, Dr. Ben Calem believes he was genetically predispositioned to become a periodontist!
Born and raised in central New Jersey, Dr. Calem attended The College of New Jersey (formerly Trenton State College) where he majored in biology and minored in chemistry. He then went on to study dentistry at Rutgers University School of Dentistry (formerly the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey). In his senior year, he was selected to partake in a progressive educational program in Somerdale, NJ. The program, entitled C.O.D.E. (Community Oriented Dental Education), provided Dr. Calem the opportunity to practice restorative dentistry in an office setting, as opposed to a school environment. As his professional relationships in South Jersey developed, he continued his post-graduate training at the Virtua Dental Center in Camden, NJ for one year.
With a passion for periodontal surgery and improving oral health, Dr. Calem returned to Rutgers University School of Dentistry to specialize in periodontology. As chief resident, his research focused on ridge preservation procedures to allow for future dental implant placement.
After completing a rigorous three-year residency program, Dr. Calem relocated to South Jersey and joined the practice in 2003. He is proficient in all facets of periodontal and implant therapy, and has been recently trained in the Chao Pinhole Surgical procedure and the All-On-4 treatment modality.
In 2008, he became director of the Seattle Study Club of South Jersey a prestigious continuing education forum which promotes interdisciplinary dentistry and higher learning to the dental community. His belief in organized dentistry led to his involvement in the Southern Dental Society where he became President in 2012. In addition, he was clinical assistant professor at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine/Department of Periodontics from 2004 to 2011. He has been involved in Donated Dental Services (DDS), providing periodontal care for those less fortunate. He has also recently become part of the Holocaust Survivors Oral Health Program. This program provides periodontal treatment to those individuals who survived the Holocaust.

Dr. Canal is an EXPERT periodontist. ALL of his associate workers are EXPERT at what they do. I have been a delighted patient for thirty years. Yana does a perfect periodontal maintenance and then explains to me in detail what I need to do with my at -home brushing and cleaning.

Referred to Canal Calem Periodontics for a possible implant by my primary dentist. Morning appointment on a drizzly rain day - stepping into practice felt comfortable right away. Nice atmosphere in waiting room - masks not required on that day. Music piped thru the office toe tapping and humming but not too loud. Office assistants got me checked in - Dr Canal's crew got me to the.medical recliner - X-rays, etc. Doc came in poked a bit at teeth & explained options. Comfortable at every moment - some laughter too. Got back to front desk - reviewed my payment & made my next appointment. Definitely recommend Canal Calem Periodontics based on my new patient experience.

Had a really excellent experience. First Dr. Canal explained the total procedure of the dental implant. Next came the actual process of the implant. It went very well. He was caring and professional. His tech was also first rate. She thoroughly explained the post operative procedure. A great experience.

I have been coming here for quite some time and they make the experience as pleasant as going to the periodontist can be. They are pleasant and very capable. One thing I like is that over entire time I have been coming here, maybe 7 years, I have always had the same hygienists. Very capable group.

Dr Canal was excellent!! With being a Dental Hygienist and in the dental field for 38 years ... I'm very meticulous who I allow to work in my mouth. Knowing his reputation from being in the field, I called his office. Due to a fractured tooth that became a very painful abscess, he understood the level of pain and immediately made time to have it extracted as well as prepare it for future Implant. Staff was very knowledgeable, helpful & compassionate. Very grateful for the excellent work & understanding the level of pain I was in!! Thank you all for job well done 5
