Over a period of time, the jaw bone associated with missing teeth atrophies and is reabsorbed. This often leaves a condition in which there is poor quality and quantity of bone suitable for the placement of dental implants. In these situations, most patients are not candidates for the placement of dental implants.

With bone grafting, we now have the opportunity to not only replace bone where it is missing but also have the ability to promote new bone growth in that location. This not only gives us the opportunity to place implants of proper length and width, but it also gives us a chance to restore functionality and aesthetic appearance.

Allogenic bone, or allograft, is dead bone harvested from a cadaver, then processed using a freeze-dry method to extract the water via a vacuum. Unlike autogenous bone, allogenic bone cannot produce new bone on its own. Rather, it serves as a framework, or scaffold, over which bone from the surrounding bony walls can grow to fill the defect or void.

Autogenous bone grafts, also known as autografts, are made from your own bone, taken from somewhere else in the body. The bone is typically harvested from the chin, jaw, lower leg bone, hip, or skull. Autogenous bone grafts are advantageous in that the graft material is your own live bone, meaning it contains living cellular elements that enhance bone growth, also eliminating the risk of your body rejecting the graft material since it comes from you.

Xenogenic bone is derived from non-living bone of another species, usually a cow. The bone is processed at very high temperatures to avoid the potential for immune rejection and contamination. Like allogenic grafts, xenogenic grafts serve as a framework for bone from the surrounding area to grow and fill the void.

Both allogenic and xenogenic bone grafting have the advantage of not requiring a second procedure to harvest your own bone, as with autografts. However, because these options lack autografts bone-forming properties, bone regeneration may take longer than autografts and have a less predictable outcome.

This product is processed allograft bone, containing collagen, proteins, and growth factors that are extracted from the allograft bone. It is available in the form of powder, putty, chips, or a gel that can be injected through a syringe.

Graft composites consist of other bone graft materials and growth factors to achieve the benefits of a variety of substances. Some combinations may include collagen/ceramic composite, which closely resembles the composition of natural bone, DBM combined with bone marrow cells, which aid in the growth of new bone, or a collagen/ceramic/autograft composite.

Bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are proteins naturally produced in the body that promote and regulate bone formation and healing. Synthetic materials also have the advantage of not requiring a second procedure to harvest bone, reducing risk and pain. Each bone grafting option has its own risks and benefits. Dr. Pennington will determine which type of bone graft material best suited to your particular needs.

Dr. Pennington received her board certification from the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2005. She is an active member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Georgia Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Dental Association, the Georgia Dental Association, the American Medical Association, the Georgia Medical Association, and the Camden Dental Society.

As a dedicated mother of two children, Lydia and Matthew, Dr. Pennington enjoys coastal living in Camden County. Her hobbies include boat rides, walking on the beaches of Cumberland Island, reading, exercising, and bike riding with her family. My wisdom teeth started to randomly cause me a great deal of pain and it was very difficult for me to eat, swallow, and open my mouth. I called Camden Oral Surgery and they were immediately so helpful and very kind! The process was very quick and they had an opening for me within three days of calling. I filled out all the patient paperwork online beforehand so the day of surgery was easy peasy, which was such a relief! This was also my first time having any kind of surgery and IV sedation. All the staff are incredibly sweet, it's very clean, and I felt safe and cared for the entire time. I would recommend Dr. Pennington and her office staff to anyone who is need of an oral surgeon. It's also an all women business. Love it!!

Wonderfully welcoming, expertly efficient, spectacularly skilled, competently caring.........this is the only place to go for non-usual dental work. Dr Pennington-Mimick is both a Doctor of Dentistry and a Certified Maxillofacial and Oral Surgeon and she excels at both. Extractions are a breeze - my recent appointment took roughly 30 minutes including anesthesia. Preparation for implants is a practice specialty. Trust me - there is no practice anywhere that does it better. The entire staff exudes intelligence, pride and an obvious love for what they do which merits more than 5 stars if such a thing was allowed. Oh! One final thought. They will work diligently with you and your insurer to provide you with the best possible price for the inestimable value and outstanding outcomes that they provide. Here's my 'before' picture! I have every confidence that my 'after' pic will be even better!

For such an unpleasant thing as getting a tooth pulled I can think of no better way to experience it. The entire staff I encountered from receptionist to medical staff were incredible. All were professional and went the extra mile to ensure my comfort and ease through the entire process. They are truly great at what they do. Though I hope there will be no further oral surgery required for me in the future -- if there is I know exactly where I'm going. Thank you Camden Oral Surgery!
