It was my first appointment with Calm Dental , apparently the dentist was too busy to come talk to me, he just kept sending in his hygienist. If I could leave zero stars I would

My husband & I have been going to Calm Dental for years now. As our teens transition from our pediatric practice to Calm Dental I would have expected a smooth transition. Two of my teens were seen in July and everything seemingly went well. The hygienists here are AMAZING! However, this time when we arrived I was asked if I was okay with xrays and floride treatments that may or may not be covered. The secretary, Ann, wanted me to agree to payment if not covered or my son couldn't be seen. I requested she call the insurance company. As she called my insurance company to verify coverage benefits she got upset with the company and hung up without answers. I called my pediatric dental office and they provided me reassurance that the insurance would cover the preventive services. Ann seemed frustrated with me talking to the dental office and she asked to use my personal cell to talk with their secretary. She ended the call and failed to ask if floride treatments were even covered. She proceeded to tell me, as she was walking away from me, that he doesn't need the floride treatment this time. As a secretary, this is not in her scope of practice to determine. It gets worse. She tells me I have a balance due. During my last visit I was paid in full to my knowledge, so I ask her what wasn't covered. She said that $20 was from my husband (very vague) and the $60 was from my teens last visit. I asked for a detailed explanation of services which were not covered for the teens and paid the $20 for my husband. Ann reports that she isn't going to provide the billing details for me, that she is detail oriented, and I just owe the money. She proceeds to say you should just pay or you can call your insurance company to figure it out because she isn't looking into it. She actually said that I need to "watch my tone with her" with my teenage son standing beside me. I responded calmly that she has no right to suggest I have a certain tone to my voice as I have every right to understand my bill. I called my insurance company when I got home. My insurance company three way called Ann at Calm Dental with me as they were appalled that I was treated in such a manner. Come to find out the two other teen's claims were never filed properly. My insurance company asked Ann how I owed $60 when they have no claims to review with the teens. She argued with the insurance company that they must not have seen her attachment that she does it herself and she KNOWS she did it right. He tells her that nothing was filed. Additionally, after further review of the files, it seems a clerical error from 2021 resulted in inappropriate billing. My insurance company assured me once the proper paperwork is faxed that my bill will be covered. Good thing I didn't "just pay it". Now, the decision is... do I really want to provide buisness to this facility. The hygienists are great and the dentists have never been an issue. I thought maybe Ann was having an off day, but as I read reviews... I felt obligated to also comment on Ann's unprofessional behaviors.

Update: Exited calm dental because a customer service experience. My last appointment I was told I have two cavities which compromised the strength of the teeth so I needed two crowns putting me well out of my insurance coverage (approx $1100+ out of pocket costs). Shared my diagnosis with my new dentist office. They take several X-rays and go over each nook and cranny of each tooth and magically there is NOT ONE CAVITY to be found. Called calm dental for an explanation and was told each dentist gives their expert assessment and not every dentist shares the same outlook on dental care. Cavities are now a maybe thing, strange. You do the math. I have been going to Calm Dental for several years and have always been happy with the services I have received. Unfortunately, their receptionist Anna has little patience and has no problem letting you know that you are incompetent and wasting her time. I am fully aware that I was more than confused on our call, and would completely understand someone rolling their eyes and gritting their teeth as they tried to understand how they could help me. After Anna's snide attitude I hung up the phone feeling embarrassed and confused by what I had done to deserve such treatment. That embarrassment then turned into anger because as a paying customer I have every right to FULLY understand my payments to make a well informed decision. I have NEVER taken the time to leave a company a negative review, but after today's experience I have no problem voicing what I experienced. Seeing that there are several other reviews that mention her by name it seems as though I am in good company.

I was a bit frustrated with today's visit (since my roots were worse than expected, the work had to be stopped, and I will now have to consider other options for the affected tooth in-question...), BUT... Dr. Karen and Anna ALWAYS explain everything clearly, and take the time to help the patient make the most informed choice, both for long-term maintenance, as well as for concerns over out-of-pocket expenses. I appreciate that this dental office always does its very best to save a tooth, even when other dentists may've just gone right to extraction, as I have experienced in the past. Though I have a bit more leg-work ahead of me to get the problems with this tooth resolved, I made my phone calls and decisions today as well-informed as I could be- and with a bit more confidence- thanks the the staff at Calm Dental (and with a little help from my Union)! I would still highly recommend Calm Dental and Dr. Karen over ANY other dentist I've had the misfortune of seeing, before I decided to start coming here. Keep up the good work!

Update 1/19/21 Went to a new dentist for a consult regarding the tooth that Calm Dental said would need a new crown ($1200+) and I was informed that the tooth was beyond repair and would have to be surgically removed! I'm glad I made the decision to switch to a new dentist! They showed me my xrays, explained them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ervice was excellent until I didn't have insurance. I spent a load of money and they were happy to extend me credit to cover what my insurance didn't. I went in for a cleaning and found out that there is an infection under a crown on the tooth that was an anchor for my partial. I have had trouble with the partial since day one and I'm certain it broke the seal around the crown. My concerns about the partial were voiced and I was told that I'd just have to get use to it. I also did not have anyone look at it after my cleaning because no one was there to do so. Now they want me make an appointment to see the dentist to discuss options which will cost me more money because I don't have insurance anymore. I spoke with receptionist on several occasions the last was to make an appointment (which I was told there was only one until the middle of January, as if they don't set aside appointments for emergencies. I was born at night but it wasn't last night!) to have the infected root canal removed and she told me they would call in a script for an antibiotic because it has now abscessed. The script was never called in and the message I left got no response. Seems to me that since I a don't have insurance that I'm no longer worthy of care and because I can not spend $1300 for crown replacement I'm being screwed for an appointment. I originally gave Calm Dental a five star rating because they treated me very well while I was bringing them thousands of dollars. Now because I don't have insurance, they are unwilling to work with me on payment as they did before sighting Covid as the reason they can't. I find this as an excuse because when I made previous payment agreements they were done right over the phone and I didn't miss any payments. As for getting root canals, I'd advise you to just let them pull the tooth because it'll cost you the price of another root canal to get it fixed which would've been nice to know before I had it done. Seems as though they're strictly about the money and do not care about helping when there is a legitimate need such as an abscess. I will be looking for another dentist to fix my tooth. If asked in the future, I will not recommend them. They are all about the money, not about helping the patient.19/

If you like waiting 50 years for you're appt this is the place to go. And even if ur appt is first and were there first they will purposely put other customers ahead of you. They take years to do it

Update after reply from owner: It has been years since I've been with your practice, yes. But, my review is correct and I am not mistaken. Calm Dental and Dr Karen should not be trusted. Update: I went to a different dentist who said I never got a root canal like the horrible doctor at calm said she gave me. I don't know what she did in my mouth, but it was horrifically painful and she charged me 1500 out of pocket after my insurance covered 1500. INSURANCE FRAUD! HORRIBLE PRACTICE.

I've been with Calm Dental for years. Great practice, professional, timely and able to take care of urgent issues quickly. Barb is a wonderful hygienist, and Dr. Popelka is a great dentist. Highly recommend Calm Dental if you're looking for great dental care.

Anna is the worst receptionist I've ever dealt with. Regardless of how well the dentists are I won't be going back to calm dental just because of her. Thank your receptionist for losing a house hold of patients! And I'll be telling everyone I know not to go there. And don't be fooled by the reviews. I'm sure 90% of them are fake

I went in for an appointment on July 22nd 2020. I had a few fillings done and set up a Payment plan. I worked with the receptionist Anna to set up payments. I paid $50 the day of then had two more payments to make - $50 on 7/31 and $79.20 on 8/14. No big deal. I had left a voicemail to run the remaining amount owed all at once on 7/31 for $129.20 which was run as requested and cleared in my bank account. She sent me a confirmation message with an image of my total. All set, all paid off ... or so I thought. On 9/16/2020 ... over a MONTH LATER, I see a charge on my account for $151 which overdrew my bank account since I was unaware of this payment and unable to put the required funds in there. I call from work and ask why i was charged and she said "i missed the payment you told us to run back in July" I said okay well I'm at work and I don't have the paperwork in front of me. I asked why i didn't get a call about the payment because that was not on the slip she had written out for me and she said she did call. I also never received a statement from my insurance company. She was right. She did call. But not about a payment. No voicemail left. It was about rescheduling my cleaning. Nothing was mentioned about a payment owed that I was not even aware of. I decided to go home on my lunch break and find the paperwork and added up the total of all my payments and called her back and this time she said it was because insurance ended up not Covering what We thought it would and now we know for next time. FIRST OF ALL - she claimed it was my payment from July in our first phone call of the day - which was an absolute lie. So I hang up with Anna. I decide to call back a little later and tell her to give me a full refund and cancel my appointment for the next day because I did not authorize the $151 payment and what she did was illegal and I won't be going back there. All she said was "I understand" which I find funny because she never understands any other question I have ever asked her. Anna wrote my card number down at my first visit to run the remaining two payments I had been aware of originally. I did NOT at any point give any approval to Calm Dental or their receptionist, to run this $151 payment. Im not sure how it is okay regardless of how much is due, to run an unauthorized payment even if I did not answer when she tried to call. I love Dr Karen, she is absolutely amazing and I would give her a million stars all day every day but I will be taking my business elsewhere due to the receptionist being rude almost every time I call with any kind of question and running payments that are NOT authorized. Which is, in fact, against the law. Great Job Anna. It looks like I'm not the only one that has a problem with you based off the other reviews.
