Our Fishhawk orthodontist, Dr. Derek Busciglio, is board certified with the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO). This certification requires much more extensive training and testing than what is necessary to receive a state license.

Orthodontics is the dental speciality that deals with the correction of malocclusions, which refers to any misalignment of the teeth or bite. Orthodontists are dentists with additional training in correcting these issues. To correct malocclusions, orthodontists utilize a range of orthodontic treatments, from non-invasive treatments like braces or Invisalign clear aligners to jaw surgery to correct severe issues with your bite.

Orthodontists have had extensive education and special training in orthodontics beyond general dentistry (which typically focuses on dental hygiene and basic dental conditions like cavities). This additional training and education can take as much as three to five years after general dental school to complete.

Dr. Derek Busciglio is a board-certified orthodontist with the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO). This certification is voluntary and is not required to practice in the state. Obtaining ABO certification is a rigorous process that requires commitment, education, and training that goes above and beyond the requirements for state licensure.

Orthodontists need additional education, testing, and assessments to prove their dedication to the highest standards of orthodontic practice to pass the board. The orthodontist must also complete a CODA-accredited orthodontic program, as well as an accredited residency of two to three years. Receiving ABO certification is no easy feat. In fact, only around 20% of orthodontists receive this distinction.

According to the American Association of Orthodontists, children should have their first orthodontic evaluation by the age of seven. After all, early orthodontic treatment can help children prevent malocclusions and other orthodontic issues as they get older.

By the time your child is seven, their front four adult teeth should have come in on both the top and bottom jaw, and their permanent molars may have already begun to erupt. Dr. Busciglio can identify any potential issues or future problems during an early orthodontic evaluation. He may recommend a spacer to make sure your childs mouth has enough room to fit the rest of their adult teeth as they appear.

After all of their adult teeth come in, a child may be a candidate for orthodontic treatment, such as braces, or if they are a teenager, possibly Invisalign. Along with traditional metal braces, we also offer ceramic braces and self-ligating braces. If your child ends up with ceramic or metal braces, they can customize them with colored elastic bands of their choosing, which makes treatment more fun.

Using the various orthodontic technologies at our disposal, we can help adults correct a host of orthodontic issues and help them achieve a straighter, healthier smile.
