I love the interactions I have with our patients and staff. I truly enjoy getting to know different people and their personalities. I also love the process of transforming each patients smile and seeing his or her personality blossom through that process.
I am a native of North Carolina, having been born in Burlington and spending my childhood in Charlotte. My family and I moved north and I later attended college at the University of Maryland, where I received a B.S. in Biology.
I went on to attend the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery where I received numerous honors and awards for both academic and clinical excellence. An elected member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon national dental honor society and recipient of the American Association of Orthodontists Award, I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS) in 1999.
Following graduation from dental school, I completed a general practice residency at the VA Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. I then completed a two-and-a-half-year post-graduate residency in orthodontics at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA, where I received my certificate in orthodontics.
I strive to stay on the cutting edge with patient care and changes in orthodontic technology by taking two to three times of the state licensing board's required number of continuing education hours. I enjoy the continued learning, as advances in technology have improved the practice of orthodontics tremendously. Super-elastic wires have increased efficiency and decreased patient discomfort. With newer appliances, such as mini-implants, we can now give patients results that were never before possible without surgery. It's exciting to be part of a dynamic, progressive practice!
I routinely participate in dental mission trips to countries in Latin and South America, such as Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua, Ecuador, and Guatemala. I recently led a dental mission to Uganda in Africa. Closer to home, I volunteer for the Wake Smiles Dental Clinic in downtown Raleigh. I also serve as a deacon at Providence Baptist Church and help teach a Jobs for Life class there.
My wife Nancy and I are thrilled to be back in our home state. Nancy grew up in Brevard, NC and graduated from UNC. We are the proud parents of Will, Katie, and Emily, and we love spending time together as a family. My interests include golf, soccer, triathlons, and watching ACC basketball.
I am thrilled to be in the field of orthodontics, as I love meeting new people and helping them become the proud owners of beautiful life-changing smiles! Every day I strive to provide my patients with excellent care as well as an enjoyable experience during their orthodontic treatment.
I received my Master of Science degree and orthodontic specialty certificate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Go Heels!), a program known worldwide for excellence in research and clinical care. After graduating I voluntarily completed the American Board of Orthodontics certification process to become a Board Certified Orthodontist, a distinction attained by only one in three orthodontists nationwide.
I consider community involvement an important part of my life, and I volunteer with local dental societies and with several dental clinics for the underserved throughout the state. I have previously served aspresident of the Raleigh-Wake County Dental Society (RWCDS), and currently serve as the Secretary/Treasurerfor the North Carolina Association of Orthodontists (NCAO), as well as represent the state of North Carolina as our delegate to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). I attend the Summit Church and I am involved in our small group leadership. Giving back to the educational community is also a priority for me, and for nearly five years Iserved as adjunct assistant professor at the UNC School of Dentistry, where I taught clinical orthodontics to the dental students. My professional affiliations include:
I am blessed with a loving wife Lauren, a wonderful and talented former high school teacher. She and I enjoy spending time with our son Wesley and our daughters Ruthie and Alice. When I have free time, I love to read, run, listen to music, watch ACC sports, and discusstrivia questions.
We recognize that all of our patients are unique and deserve to receive orthodontic care that reflects their individual needs. Our experienced and talented team is committed to working with you and your family to create a comfortable, stress-free, and rewarding orthodontic experience every time you visit our practice.
I was born and raised in Raleigh, NC. I attended East Carolina University, (Go Pirates!) where I met my husband Gerald, who is serving our country in the United States Army. In 2021 we bought home our beautiful son, whom we can't get enough of.
Being a part of this practice is more like being part of a family. I enjoy coming into workevery day and spending time with my co-workers. I love relationships and building them with every patient I see, and consider it a joy to be a part of their lives.
I have been married to my wonderful husband, Richard, for over 30 years. I have two sons. My oldest son works with a software company in Raleigh. Myyoungest son is a missionary in the Middle East. I have four beautiful granddaughters and one precious grandson.
I was born and raised a Texas girl, but have had the joy of living all over the world as an adult. I discovered Raleigh when I moved here for seminary back in 2010 and just recently moved back to make it home.
I love who we are at BMO! I love that the people I work with are not just coworkers but they are family members and my closest friends. But what I love most of all is that God is first in all that we do.
I ADORE the people with whom I get to work! They are the kindest, sweetest, most genuinely thoughtful people you'll ever meet. And on top of that, I love getting to make our Smiles For A Lifetimeprogram a reality for our patients!
I was born andraised in Cleveland, Ohio, where my parents still live in my childhood home. I got married in 2010 and moved to NC with my husband 6 months later! In 2017, we brought home our beautiful son, and in 2019 our precious little girl, both of whom we cannot get enough of.
In 1972, this practice opened its doors to provide its patients with the highest quality orthodontic care in a warm, friendly, family-oriented, and God-honoring environment. Dr. Stone and Dr. Hixson faithfully served the community for many years and have set the foundation for excellence in this practice. Continuing that tradition now as Bumgarner & Martin Orthodontics, we work diligently to provide you with life-changing experiences to accompany your beautiful smile.
We strive to get to know each patient personally and figure out how we can make orthodontics work best for his or her unique situation. For families who have multiple children in treatment, this means trying our best to schedule siblings on the same day to save busy parents a trip. For others, this means being aware of their treatment goals, such as getting braces off by prom, or using Invisalign to allow a mom to feel confident at her daughters wedding. Getting to know our patients as people also leads us to invest in their lives outside the office by participating in various community and volunteer events.
