Dr. James E. Buckthal has provided quality orthodontic care to patients in the Raleigh, North Carolina area since 1988. He obtained his doctorate degree in dentistry from the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry in 1984, and he obtained a Master of Science in Orthodontics from the University of North Carolina Department of Orthodontics in 1986. Dr. Buckthal holds the Shepard Award of Distinction for achieving the highest score on the American Board of Orthodontics.
Dr. Buckthal feels it is important to stay on the cutting-edge of his field. Thus, he maintains professional memberships with the American Association of Orthodontists, North Carolina Association of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, North Carolina Dental Society, and the Raleigh-Wake County Dental Society. Dr. Buckthal is a past-president of the North Carolina Association of Orthodontists and a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International.
Dr. Buckthal has volunteered with several charitable organizations, including Wake Smiles Dental Clinic, Open Door Dental Clinic, Urban Ministries, Mission of Mercy, and Haiti Outreach Ministry. He is also a member and elder at White Memorial Presbyterian Church.
In his spare time, he enjoys tennis, golf, snow skiing, boating, and traveling with his wife Amy and their two children, Forrest and Anna Carson. He is an active member of White Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Dr. Keyser is a Raleigh, North Carolina native. She is a graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes school and Broughton High School.Her grandfather was a general dentist who practiced in Raleigh for 35 years. He enthusiastically shared his passion for dentistry with Dr. Keyser.
Dr. K was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of UNC-CH, completingher Bachelor of Science degree in psychology while minoring in chemistry and Spanish, with a brief stint studying abroad in Sevilla, Spain. As a member and coach of UNCs women club lacrosse team, she helped the team bring home two national championships.
Dr. Keyser went on to study orthodontics in Chapel Hill. During dental school, she met her now husband, Robb. During residency, Dr. Keyser conducted research on the relationship of jaw and tooth positions to speech. She was recognized nationally for her research andawarded the Joseph E. Johnson Clinical Award.
Dr. Keyser loves the world of dentistry and enjoys being involved in oragnized dentistry on many levels. She is a member of the North Carolina Dental Society, the American Dental Association (ADA), and the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO).She has served as a member of the American Associate of Orthodontists Foundation (AAOF)Board of Directors.
When not enraptured by the world of teeth, the Keysers can be found training for various triathlons, playing lacrosse, golf, or tennis, attending any and all Tar Heel sporting events or spending time with family.

Buckthal Orthodontics has two conveniently located offices in Raleigh and Knightdale, North Carolina. Our Raleigh office is on Glenwood Avenue near Oberlin Road. Our Knightdale office is on Old Knight Road between Knightdale High School and Highway US-64. We put your needs first to achieve efficient and comprehensive treatment and we offer flexible scheduling Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Dr. Buckthal and Dr. Keyser are remarkable!! I have never loved my teeth more!! You will get topnotch service with a very, very caring and loving staff! I have had braces twice before and was never 100% satisfied but this time never have I been more pleased with the work they have done. The BEST orthodontics in Wake County!

People seem nice but I paid 800.00 out of pocket, even with two insurance companies and still no braces for either one of my son's. I was told that I had topay 400.00 per child for "records" to send to the primary insurance company for preapproval, which they denied. So Buckthal Ortho didn't bother to send the second one because they said they usually deny the second oe as well. Though they have the same insurance company/ coverages, they do not have the same mouth and teeth. So my second son should have had a preauthorization requested as well. I don;t think the office should make the decision and assume that insurance won't cover another child with separate treatment needs. I called and asked for a refund on what I paid for the preapproval request that was never sent. They told me I could have the "records". Pretty much useless to me and I am out 800.00 total. I do not have posession of the "records" and no one called me back regarding the refund. I would not recommend.

If you are looking/shopping around for braces, just go ahead and stop here! Dr. Buckthal and his staff are the BEST. My daughter has had braces going on 2.5 years and almost ready to get them off. You get to know the staff members when you seem them every 4-6 weeks, they become your second family! They are so sweet from the time you walk in up until the time you walk out the door. Dr. Buckthal is courteous and respectful and does amazing work! I just can't say enough good things about them!
