Although children with special needs are at higher risk of dental decay, there have been few resources developed to help parents understand the importance of oral health and how to care for their childs mouth. Our team wanted to change that! Brush resources were created after consulting with parents, early interventionists, and dental professionals about the problems they face and how to best educate parents.

We have developed aninteractive flip chartdesigned for use from prenatal through childhood,16 associated parent handouts, and short videos to assist parents and caregivers of children with special needs. The flip chart covers common oral health issues and obstacles related to specific disabilities such as autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and more.

Also answered are common questions, such as how to find a dentist, tips for toothbrushing, what to do in the event of a mouth injury, and how to care for a childs teeth when they dont take food orally. We also offer acurriculumkit, complete with tooth models for demonstration, handouts and an interactive flip chart.

Established in 1981, McMillen Health is a non-profit with a mission to provide vital, effective preventive health education that promotes physical, emotional, and social well-being. Our program offerings are available to students of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Each year we teach over 60,000 people!

In 2012, McMillen Health developed the Brush Early Childhood Oral Health Curriculum in an effort to change childrens health status and help children enter Kindergarten ready to learn. We advocate for the establishment of a dental home by age one and promote oral health education for all who influence a childs health status, including parents, caregivers, educators, and health practitioners. Through discussions with regional dentists, we realized there was a need for a curriculum that early childhood educators and home visitors could implement all year long, with support from McMillen Health. In collaboration with the Isaac Knapp Dental Education Foundation, we developed Brush, an interdisciplinary oral health curriculum aimed at low-income children and their parents. Brush provides educational and developmental experiences that improve the school readiness of underserved children.
