Dr. Morris Cohen was bornin Washington, D.C. and raised above his parents ' corner grocery store at 8th & MassachusettsAvenue NE. He receivedhis undergraduate degree fromGeorge Washington University. He went to dental school at theUniversity of Illinoisunder the GI bill. He founded Cohen & Cohen in 1949, He practiced dentistry for over 65 years here in Washington, DC and is known among his former patients and colleagues as the 'maven' of occlusal adjustments (bites). His patients ask about him every day.
During his long, successful career, Dr. Morris served as President of the DC Dental Society and Maimonides Dental Society, and served as an active member of the Alpha Omega Dental Fraternity. He was a founding member of the Dental Science Study Club in 1952. Among his most prestigious awards are the Sterling V. Mead award from the DC Dental Society (its highest award) and the 'Tree of Life' award from theJewish National Fund. From the Jewish Federation he has recieved theGenerations Award (with Dr. Paul and Dr. Sara), Campaigner of the Year and Lifetime Honorary Board Member.
Dr. Morris's interest include tennis, visiting Israel (25 trips so far), the Israel Tennis Centers, Federation of Greater Washington, and spending time with his four children, six grandchildrenand seven great-grandchildren!
Dr. Paul Cohen joined his father's practice after graduating from Georgetown University Dental School. Dr. Cohen is a native of SilverSpring and attended the College of Wooster in Ohio. He has followed in Dr. Morris'footsteps by becoming well-versed in occlusal adjustments and conservatively treating TMJ disorders, andalso enjoys complex restorativecases.
Throughout his career Dr. Paul hasbeen active in organized dentistry. He has served as President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary of the DC Dental Society and President of the MaimonidesDental Society. He is a fellow ofthe American College of Dentistry and the International College.He was a member of the DCDS delegationto the ADA and served on the Council of Dental Practice. He has also served as a forensic odontologist for the District ofColumbia and the federal government and assisted in the dental identification of victims of 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and the West Warwick, RI ar fire. He has been honored with the DC Dental Society's Sterling V. Mead award.Respected in his profession, he is often asked to mentor visiting dentists and dental students from this country and around the world.
Dr. Cohen loves coming into work everyday. He also is passionate about running marathons (over 60 to date) and ultramarathons, where he is qualified as a 'Legend' in the JFK 50-miler (10 finishes). His other interests includeplaying the bass guitar in his band Outta the Blues, orchids, and playing golf. He enjoys spending time with his wife, Cyna, who has managed the office for over 35 years, his father Morris, his three daughters and son-in-laws, and sevengrandchildren.
A native of Potomac, Maryland, Dr. Sara Cohen attended Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School and Winston Churchill High School. She completed her undergraduate degree at Duke University, majoring in History and Spanish. At Duke, she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and graduated Summa Cum Laude . She received her DMD degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. She received a scholarship award from Warner Lambert for preventive dentistry and a four-year merit scholarship from the University of Pennsylvania. She was awarded the Abram Cohen award in Periodontics and was admitted to the Phi Eta Sigma freshman honor society and Omicron Kappa Epsilon honorary dental society.
Dr. Cohen is an active learner and is a member of many study groups that further the advancement of the dental profession, including Dental Science (past president), Maimonides Dental Society, Alpha Omega (student chapter president at Penn), and DC Dental Society (past board member). She has taken advanced courses in sleep apnea treatment. Dr. Cohen enjoys being part of a family tradition and establishing continuing relationships with her patients. She loves being able to diagnose a problem and achieve an immediate solution. She is detail-oriented dentist who gives every patient 100% of her attention and effort.
Dr. Cohen enjoys spending time with her husband Norm and their four children. She is an avid fan of film, the Washington Nationals, theater, traveling, participating on the development committee for CESJDS, and doing charitable work. She is on the Film Council for the Washington Jewish Film Festival at the DC JCC and plays the acoustic guitar. Dr. Sara is fluent in Spanish.
Dr. Isabelle Lass was born and raised in Washington, D.C. as a first generation American. She received her undergraduate degree in Business Management from Ithaca College and worked in retail management for several years. She then joined her father's dental laboratory for eight years before pursuing a dental degree.She graduated from the University of Maryland, Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. She was awarded a prosthodontic clerkship position which offered her the opportunity to treat more complex restorative cases. Her academic excellence was recognized by theGamma Pi Delta and Omicron Pi honor societies. She was also a member of Psi Omega fraternity during dental school. She joined Cohen & Cohen after graduation and she has been a patient here forher entire life. Dr. Morris saw her potential as a child and predicted that she would work here.
Dr. Lass loves the opportunity to talk with and care for her patients while helping them maintain their oral health. Her attention to detail, patience and kind nature are what keep her patients happy. She loves dentistry since it combines her skills while allowing her to help people smile.
Since graduating, she has kept up to date with the latest advances in dentistry bycompleting up to50 hours of continuing education per year. Dr. Lass is a member of the DC Dental Society, American Dental Association, Maimonides Dental Society, and served as the president of Dental Science Study Club for three years. She is proud to have been inducted as a fellow into the International College of Dentists, dentistry's oldest and largest honor society. She alsoserves on the board of the Mid-Atlantic Dental Meeting, and enjoys volunteering at events such as the NBC4 Health Expo, Mission of Mercy and Give Kids a Smile.
