At Brighter Smiles Dental, Dr. Sylvia Irwin and her staff are devoted to providing high quality, personalized dental care to their patients. Our dental practice is committed to providing conservative, preventive dental care for both adults and children, as well as providing all phases of restorative and cosmetic dental treatment. Our Nutley, New Jersey office provides a relaxing and soothing environment for our patients. Dr. Irwin and her staff utilize the latest, cutting-edge advancements in dentistry and treat patients with both compassion and understanding.
Dr. Irwin received her BA from Douglass College where she was a Phi Beta Kappa honors graduate. In 1980 she graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University Dental School and then went on to complete a General Practice Residency at the University Hospital of UMDNJ. Dr. Irwin came to Nutley in the fall of 1981, taking over an existing dental practice on High Street. In 1996 our practice moved to its current location on the corner of Washington and Grant Avenues. The move has made our office more easily accessible and has allowed us to expand and to provide ample parking for our patients.
In dentistry, education does not end when you finish school. Dentistry is an ever-evolving field and you may feel confident in knowing that Dr. Irwin is committed to continuing dental education as a means of staying abreast of new techniques, procedures, and advances in dentistry. In order to provide the highest quality and state of the art care she has continued her training through participation in numerous continuing education courses. As part of her ongoing commitment to keeping abreast of new materials and techniques, Dr. Irwin serves as a clinical evaluator for several dental journals, and her reports have been published in various journals.
Dr. Irwin received a Certificate of Completion for her participation in the Golden Study Groups six month Implant Prosthetics Course, and is a member of the American Dental Association, the New Jersey State Dental Association, and the Essex County Dental Association. She also mentors dental assisting students from nearby schools, providing externship supervision and training
On Fridays Dr. Irwin serves as an attending dentist at the Hackensack Meridian Health Mountainside Medical Centers Dental Residency Program. There she supervises the dental clinic, instructs the residents in all phases of dentistry and gives weekly lectures. Dr. Irwin also supervises the clinics participation in the annual Give Kids a Smile Day, a day of charitable dentistry.
On Fridays Dr. Irwin serves as an attending dentist and head of the General Dentistry section at the Hackensack Meridian Health Mountainside Medical Centers Dental Residency Program. There she supervises the dental clinic, instructs the residents in all phases of dentistry and gives weekly lectures. Dr. Irwin also supervises the clinics participation in the annual Give Kids a Smile Day, a day of charitable dentistry.
On a more personal note, Dr. Irwin is happily married to a USCG licensed fishing boat captain, and has one married son who works in the technology sector. In her spare time Dr. Irwin also became a USCG licensed captain and completed a PhD in German with a concentration in the Medieval Period at Rutgers University. She is also an avid reader, fisherman and cook.
Dianne was educated in Kearny, NJ where she also received her initial training as a dental assistant. She continued her education at Bergen Community College and UMDNJ, becoming a Registered and Certified Dental Assistant with expanded functions. Dianne has been working alongside Dr. Irwin since 1981. Dianne is happily married and has two children, lives in Nutley, and may be found in the ShopRite on any Sunday morning (if you see her dont forget to say hello!).
Elizabeth was born in the Dominican Republic and has been living in the US for the past twenty years. She received her training as a Licensed Dental Assistant at Quality Dental School. Fluent in both Spanish and English, Elizabeth is a big asset to our practice. Elizabeth is married and has two children.
Dr. Amy Melok. Dr. Amy Melok completed her undergraduate and graduate studies in Biology at Montclair State University graduating Magna Cum Laude with both Bachelors and Masters of Science degrees. She went on to pursue her dental studies at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio where she earned her DMD degree. Upon graduation, Dr. Irwin met Dr. Melok when she was selected for the prestigious one year residency in general practice dentistry at Mountainside Medical Center, where Dr. Irwin supervises and teaches the residents and serves as Head of the General Dentistry section. During the residency, Dr. Melok provided advanced comprehensive dental care for patients, encompassing all ages and levels of dental needs.
Dr. Melok is a strong believer in providing compassionate and comfortable patient care. She enjoys treating family members of all ages and helping everyone achieve their perfect smile! She will also be expanding our practice and adding Invisible Braces to the comprehensive care and aesthetic services that we already provide in order to enhance and maintain our patients dental health and smiles.

The dentists and techs are great, but what really sets this dentist apart is their administrator. She is easy to reach, informative, cooperative, pleasant and effective. She handles all insurance and referral and scheduling questions/problems with ease. I recently moved out of nutley, but this is the only doc I kept from nutley, bc it is so rare to find a well-run office these days.

My experience with her was horrible. It took several moths. I had to have a root canal on my healthy tooth because of her wrong treatment.

They are truly God Sent Angels. I have always been afraid. They set me at ease and did a terrific job with NO PAIN. God Bless Them All !

The best place I've been to for my cleanings. I have not had any dental issues so only have been getting cleanings here. The staff is great and Dr. Irwin was really patient and caring for my scared 4 year old. Anyone looking for a great local dentist should highly consider this facility.

OMG. I have never seen such a disgusting place with people full of hate!!! Never ever go there, it was my first visit for my daughter but never ever will I go there!!! Hate hate hate full of hatred people! They greet you like this as if they are treating you for free!!!

Front reception service was horrible....I told her I have dental insurance from work..but I didn't have insurance card because my work didn't provide me with the card..she didn't try to look in the system ...so rude ..never going again

Fantastic, caring doctor. Friendly, efficient staff. I'm 62 and have been going to this practice all of my life. I wouldn't trust anyone else with the care of my mouth and teeth.

Dr Irwin is the best dentist I have every been to, I had a 4:30 appointment after about 3 minutes of filling out information on myself as a new client I was then asked to go sit in the dental chair, with in seconded Dr Irwin and the dental assistant came in to the room to talking to me on what the problem was. she told me to lay back open my mouth so I closed my eyes and just listen to the great music that was playing in the office to clam myself down, she started to do her work and explained to me what it was that she was doing. before I know it I was all done and out of there in less then 20 minutes, I was out the door by 4:55pm I can not express the joy that was going through me, I was so happy that it was painless and done. I will be going back there for more of my dental work that needs to be done. Dr Irwin and her staff are the best.

My husband and myself are patients of Dr. Sylvia Irwin for many years, and we are always very satisfied with her services. Dr. Irwin always takes the time to explain any dental problem, and what she plans to do about it. She always answers all questions that we have concerning her treatment. She shows the problem on the X-rays, so it is easy for us to understand. We feel confident that she has a lot of experience and knowledge as a dentist, and we feel that we get the best possible treatment. The staff are also very helpful and friendly. We would certainly recommend her to a friend without hesitation.
