At Brieden Orthodontics, our mission is to help patients in Harrison Township, Algonac, and the surrounding communities achieve gorgeous smiles through quality, convenient orthodontic treatment. Our goal is to place a focus on personalized care, and Dr. Brieden and our team work hard to customize treatment to fit your lifestyle. We're proud to offer a wide range of orthodontic treatments at our office and if you're unfamiliar with what to expect from orthodontics, this page is a great place to start.

At its core, orthodontic treatment is a branch of dentistry that uses high-tech appliances to apply finely-calibrated, gentle forces to the teeth. Over time, the teeth and underlying tissues respond to these forces, and the teeth slowly shift positions, creating a new alignment and a brand new smile. The specifics of the process vary between orthodontic treatments, but the underlying principles are about the same: use gentle, constant force to move the teeth to new positions and achieve a new smile.

Ultimately, all orthodontic treatments work to help patients achieve a healthy, beautiful smile but there are a number of specific orthodontic problems, called malocclusions (bad bites), that orthodontics can treat. Malocclusions vary from patient to patient and may be caused by genetics or early childhood habits like prolonged thumb sucking, and it's possible for a patient to have more than one malocclusion at the same time. Here are the most common conditions that orthodontics can treat:

There are several options available for orthodontic treatment, each with its own unique strengths and weaknesses. Treatments vary in convenience, reliability, and appearance, and ultimately only you and Dr. Brieden can decide on the right treatment for your unique situation. We offer a variety of orthodontic treatment methods at our office, including:

At Brieden Orthodontics, our mission is to help each one of our patients achieve a healthy, beautiful smile that lasts a lifetime. We combine cutting-edge orthodontic technology with the expertise of our board-certified orthodontist, Dr. Christopher Brieden, to design comprehensive orthodontic treatments that help our patients achieve a dream smile but sometimes, the best way to achieve a lifetime of healthy smiles is to start early. That's where early orthodontic treatment comes in.

For most patients, the best time to start orthodontic treatment is anywhere between the ages of 9 and 14, which is when the baby teeth have fallen out and most or all of the adult teeth are fully grown in. There are some orthodontic conditions where the best way to achieve a beautiful smile is to start earlier:

  • Crossbite: With severe crossbite, the lower teeth close outside of the upper teeth, which can cause problems in bite function and serious jaw pain later in life. By starting treatment early, we can use a specialized orthodontic device called a palatal expander to slowly, painlessly widen the upper jaw, correcting the crossbite and preventing more extensive treatments down the line.
  • Crowding: While we can often treat mild crowding through adolescent treatment alone, in more severe cases, early treatment is often the best option. Once again, we can use a palatal expander to widen the jaw and create more room for teeth in the dental arch, helping to promote a straight, healthy alignment and lessening the time needed in braces.
  • Front Teeth Protrusion: If a child's upper or lower front teeth protrude from an overbite or severe underbite, those teeth are at an increased risk of being chipped or damaged from a fall or other trauma. What's more, these problems can impair healthy jaw development. We can use braces and headgear to treat these issues quickly and easily, using the natural growth spurts of childhood to expedite treatment.
  • If you decide to begin early orthodontic treatment for your child, the path to a healthy and beautiful smile can be accomplished in two phases. This treatment plan is designed to provide high quality orthodontic care in the most effective and efficient way possible. Since a child's development can occur at different times, it is recommended that you consult with Dr. Brieden to see when would be the appropriate age to begin orthodontic treatment. After he has determined that it is necessary, he will begin with Phase I treatment.

The goal of Phase I treatment is to ensure that your child's jaw has enough room for when the permanent teeth erupt. Slight adjustments may be made such as widening the upper jaw around the age of 8 since the jawbone has not fully developed. If the problem is severe and the permanent teeth have erupted, then corrective surgery may be needed to prevent overcrowding or other dental issues. During Phase II, we will use traditional metal braces or clear aligners to properly straighten teeth into the correct position. This will align your child's teeth and jaw to create a healthy and beautiful smile.

My son started treatment at Dr. Brieden's office about six months ago and we have been so happy with the care he has received from Dr. Brieden and his staff. They communicate everything clearly, including what to expect and progress. Everyone is welcoming, friendly, and respectful. The office runs efficiently and we have never been kept waiting. My son really likes the office incentive program and looks forward to redeeming for a reward soon. We are so glad we chose Brieden Orthodontics!

Everyone at Dr. Brieden's office is just so amazing and welcoming. My son had his first phase of his ortho care at another ortho office. When it came time for my daughter to have her ortho consultation, I was just not happy with the others office approach and their one size fits all mantra at the other office. Many of our friends see Dr. Brieden so we decided to get a consultation with Dr. Brieden and WOW was I so HAPPY we did. Dr. Brieden is just amazing! His mindset is not to rush and put braces on until the child's mouth is developed and ready! I really appreciated how he took the time to look at both of my kids and really take his time and made recommendations on when braces would be most beneficial for each child. I am beyond impressed and so glad we made the switch to his office! Best decision we made! I highly recommend Dr. Brieden for ortho care!

My child's permanent teeth were growing in sideways. There was a serious overcrowding issue due in part to early eruption. Dr. Brieden was able to create a plan that did not involve pulling any teeth or putting in any expanding appliances. Other orthodontists in the area wanted to do treatment in multiple stages and could not guarantee no pulling of healthy teeth. With the treatment put in place by Dr. Brieden we could see a difference within the first 6 months of braces alone! We are now only 6 months away from treatment plan completion and could not be happier! We appreciated the in house payment plans that allowed us to pay over time. There were times we were able to pay off big chunks of the cost and also times that we could only pay the monthly payment, and they were understanding about both! The staff has always been patient, friendly, and gentle with my child. They also have an incentive program that encourages patients to do their best in taking care of their teeth and appliances and that has motivated my child as well. I am so incredibly thankful for Brieden Orthodontics taking the best care of my child who will go into middle school, high school, and the rest of life with a smile that can be shown with confidence!

Dr. Brieden is amazing! We came to him for a second opinion and I'm so glad I did. The first orthodontist my daughter saw said he would have to pull 4 teeth because of crowding. Dr. Brieden was able to avoid pulling any teeth and give my daughter a beautiful smile!

Dr. Brieden and his staff are more than welcoming and makes us comfortable whenever we take our kids. Both of our boys currently have braces now and are happy with fit and no issues. We love the fact that if anything happens like a popped wire they will try and get you in right away to resolve issues.

A few years ago my 2 children received their treatment with braces with impressive results, now I have a year with my orthodontics, I am delighted with the change and I still need it, but I am sure it will be great. The professionals are very friendly and do an excellent job.
