He received his degree in Dentistry from the University of California- San Francisco School of Dentistry and a Certificate of Completion of the General Practice Residency Program at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Martinez. He has been practicing since 1997.

In 1980 he graduated from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry and then completed a Masters program in Orthodontics at the University of California- San Francisco School of Dentistry.
