The third and last set of molars to erupt in the back of your mouth are commonly known as wisdom teeth. Many teens and young adults develop a full set of permanent teeth but do not realize they have these extra molars because they are undetectable without regular dental exams and proper X-ray evaluation.

They grow beneath the surface of the gums and establish within the jaw, but most jaws are not large enough to accommodate the additional set of molars, causing significant oral health problems. Without regular dental screening, it is not uncommon for the molars to remain undiscovered when they have already become a problem and extraction is necessary. Approximately 85% of third molars will need to be removed. To avoid serious complications, Dr. Warren recommends early removal in Waco, TX to prevent problems from arising and more complicated procedures in the future.

Brazos Oral & Facial Surgery and Dental Implants - Oral surgeon in Woodway, TX

If a patients molars have partially grown or fully grown in, they are at an increased risk for the development of several serious oral and dental problems, like impaction and dental disease. These issues may require extensive or costly procedures to correct and cause severe discomfort.

A wisdom tooth becomes impacted because there is not enough space within the dental arch, which causes the it to grow at an angle, moving toward the other molars and their established roots. Tooth impaction can cause pain, lead to oral infection, or cause pathologic conditions. When the molar is growing toward adjacent teeth, it can trap plaque and debris, making your teeth more vulnerable to decay. The molars may also crowd or damage neighboring teeth or harm the jaw bone and its nerves.

If Dr. Warren recommends wisdom teeth removal, the procedure will depend on the position of the tooth (or teeth) and the root development. A tooth that has fully cut through the gum can be extracted like any other tooth.

A tooth that is underneath the gums and pushed into the jaw bone will require an incision into the gums and removal of the portion of bone that lies over the tooth. In this case, the tooth will be extracted in smaller portions to minimize the amount of bone that is removed.

The area around where the extraction will take place will be treated with a local anesthetic prior to removal. Dr. Warren will then enter the gums and carefully remove the molars from your jaw, stitching you up afterward. Most patients sleep comfortably through the procedure and dont remember it happening once they wake up.

If you have any questions prior to your procedure, our responsive office staff and our highly trained surgical team would be happy to help you and answer your questions. Dr. Warren performs wisdom teeth removal procedures regularly at our Waco, TX, office and is completely qualified to perform your procedure.

Had a wisdom tooth extraction. Also had a molar extraction with implant placement. Surgery could not have gone better and had no pain after surgery. Slept great that night. Not sure how Dr. Warren did that, but will recommend and use him for all future dental surgery needs. Receptionist is also great, goes over everything and really puts you at ease. My nurse Tammy was also excellent making sure I was comfortable and ready for my surgery. Asked me multiple times if I was doing okay as getting me ready for the surgery. I cannot say enough great things about this whole experience.

I was referred to Brazos Oral and Facial in January by my dentist after he discovered what he believed was a tumor in my X-rays. I got set up with Dr. Gatlin that same day for a biopsy, and he explained everything clearly to me and put my mind at ease. After the biopsy confirmed it was cancer, Dr. Gatlin referred me to Dr. Williams in Fort Worth, and I am happy to say I am now cancer free. I would absolutely recommend this practice to others.

I got my wisdom teeth removed almost two years ago and was nervous having never gone to Dr Warren before let alone having a procedure done, but he and his staff were very kind, reassuring, and understanding. The procedure went smoothly and Dr Warren even called me later on to check up and ensure I was doing okay. I ended up with a dry socket (which I was warned may happen. Dr Warren said if I needed anything, I could call him and he'd take care of it) and when I went in, it was immediately taken care of! I went back to him two weeks ago to get a tooth extracted and he was just as kind. He, along with his staff, made sure I was as comfortable as possible. I would recommend him to anyone I know. Dr Warren and his staff are incredible and so generous, hospitable, accommodating, and compassionate. Biblical principles are seen in how they treat their clients. I won't be going anywhere else. Thank you, Dr Warren and team! I appreciate you all more than you know.

This is the absolute most amazing business. From the minute you walk through the door, every single employee shows compassion and concern. Dr Warren did a superb job on my dental implant and even called later that night to check on me. You don't find this level of care very often! Thanks so much!!!

I had two procedures at Brazos Oral & Facial Surgery. One removed a molar and performed a bone graft. After that healed, they implanted a socket so I can have a tooth implant. They professionally completed the procedures with little discomfort considering it involved surgery in the mouth. The Brazos team is knowledgeable and proficient. I would highly recommend them if you need oral surgery.

My son had his wisdom teeth taken out by Dr. Warren. We really appreciated Dr. Warren's staff and thought Dr. Warren did a great job. It was my son's first time being sedated and he got the hiccups (normal with sedation). Dr. Warren had a really great method to immediately stop these. Additionally, we were not desiring opioid pain killers to be prescribed post surgery and Dr. Warren offered a shot of slow-release medicine that prevented any need of those being used post-op. I recommend Dr. Warren and his staff to everyone.
