The 8th dentist in his family, Dr. Joe Safirstein became an orthodontic assistant at the age of 12 (eat your heart out, Doogie Howser) working in his fathers orthodontic practice. He is a faculty member at the OHSU Department of Orthodontics and past president of the Oregon State Society of Orthodontists.
Dr. Joe attended the University of Florida, where he studied history. (Fun Fact #1: Thats also where he became a SCUBA instructor.) He earned his dental degree with highest honors at the University of Tennessee. (Fun Fact #2: Thats also where he learned to love BBQ.) When hes not in the office, hes probably camping or cooking on the smoker in the backyard.
Like Dr. Joe, Erin has a family tie to orthodontics. Her mom has been in the field for many years. Her positive attitude and upbeat approach are second only to her amazing clinical skills. While shes not building smiles with Dr. Joe, shes likely to be 4-wheeling with her friends.
Julie started her orthodontic career with our team while she was finishing her training (and we consider ourselves fortunate that she landed in our practice.) She brings an amazing mix of personality, fun and skill to the practice.
Kristi is a long time Portlander with more than 20 years of orthodontic experience.Because shes worn every possible hat in an orthodontic office, she knows what it takes to care for our patients well. Outside of the office Kristienjoys spending time with her husband of 30 years and her two grown children.
Oh boy! Jodee loves orthodontics because of that super smile at the end of treatment! She loves seeing a person who rarely smiles, transform into someone who cant quit smiling. Jodee adores her family and spends her free time at the lake and riding ATVs with her 3 children, husband and 1 amazing grandson.

The most important part of treatment is the plan. Dr. Joe takes the time with each patient to ask the right questions (and answer any questions you have) so we understand your issues and goals. We combine careful listening with advanced diagnostics to develop an individualized treatment plan that works for you.
If braces are recommended, patients should expect to come in about every 8 weeks for adjustments and an assessment of how theyre progressing along the plan. They should also continue to see their general dentist every six months for regular cleanings.

Helpful and cheerful, they provide an environment that is fun for the young and older patients. They work with your budget and I love how up front Dr Joe was, explaining my daughter didn't need braces but letting us decide if fixing her smile would help her self confidence, we now have two daughters with Dr. Joe and are so happy with their service!

I cant explain enough how much i love Braces by Joe. As a child i was told horror stories of braces and how people would hate to go and get them tightened... now i'm 25 and have braces myself. Dr. Joe, Lisa and Tammy have all been absolute angels in my experience. I love going in and seeing everyone, it feels like family. I am going in today for an emergency fix and i couldn't be more excited to see everyone. Plus - Hank and Snoopy are the cutest dogs around.

As an adult, I was a bit nervous about getting braces. But, Dr. Joe and his staff have been so helpful, friendly and reassuring throughout the process. I've actually nerded out quite a bit because it's pretty cool to see how braces work. I appreciate the care the team takes for each patient, their kind demeanor, and all-around efficiency.

My kids and I all went to Dr.Joe's for braces, the first one was 7-8 years ago and the last one is just finished. The staff has pretty much stayed the same with very few leaving. In my opinion that gives me a feeling that it is a great place to work which translates to a good place to go where the employees are all happy and pleasant as well as very skilled and caring.

Great place for kids/teens, cool environment and they get you in and out quickly. As far as I can tell the services are priced on par. Staff is good with kids and call them on their hygiene practices or lack thereof. Mine come home wanting to do better and I appreciate the kind but firm advice because it goes over better coming from the staff than from me!

The moment I sat in Dr. Joe's chair I knew I was in the right place for my alignment needs. Pro team all the way. Everyone on Dr Joe's staff is top notch. Casual, professional, cheerful. I've never had the slightest wrinkle with any experience in the few years I've been in their care. I'm 68, a little out of the age norm for braces but they got me thru it and the results are SUPER. There aren't enough stars available for me to adequately rate Dr. Joe or his staff. Both of my kids have had braces with him and his treatment and payment options are fantastic. You never wait long for your appointment and the whole process and appointment is super efficient. My son recently had an accident and he broke his top jaw and displaced several teeth. Dr. Joe returned our call late in the evening and saw my son the next day on his day off. He checked on us repeatedly over the next few days. He truly cares about all of his patients and builds a personal relationship with them all. I would recommend him for any orthodontic procedure.

I chose Dr. Joe after visiting several orthodontists because he explained the treatment plan for my child in clear language I could understand. And my choice was proven justified last year when my child had an accident that threatened his orthodonture and his teeth. Dr. Joe immediately met us at the office on his day off.

I had braces (again!) as an adult with Dr Joe and we are currently working on my 11 yo's potential braces journey. Dr Joe has always been very respectful in explaining the process and addressing concerns. It is obvious that he cares and we have been since the start of the COVID pandemic and I felt safe.

My son and I have both gotten our braces done at dr. joe's office. He and his team are amazing! They are very friendly, and make you feel so welcome. Dr. Joe listens to any concerns you have, and also is willing to explain what he's doing so you know what is being done. He went above and beyond to make sure our teeth looked great. From our first meeting I have always felt that Dr. Joe and his team put the patient and family's interests first. He is a great listener, pragmatic, and I have an tremendous respect for his medical opinion. In addition, his office manages to treat its teenage patients with a mix of levity and playfulness to offset the unpleasantness of braces. Highly recommend.
