The 8th dentist in his family, Dr. Joe Safirstein became an orthodontic assistant at the age of 12 (eat your heart out, Doogie Howser) working in his fathers orthodontic practice. He is a faculty member at the OHSU Department of Orthodontics and past president of the Oregon State Society of Orthodontists.
Dr. Joe attended the University of Florida, where he studied history. (Fun Fact #1: Thats also where he became a SCUBA instructor.) He earned his dental degree with highest honors at the University of Tennessee. (Fun Fact #2: Thats also where he learned to love BBQ.) When hes not in the office, hes probably camping or cooking on the smoker in the backyard.
Like Dr. Joe, Erin has a family tie to orthodontics. Her mom has been in the field for many years. Her positive attitude and upbeat approach are second only to her amazing clinical skills. While shes not building smiles with Dr. Joe, shes likely to be 4-wheeling with her friends.
Julie started her orthodontic career with our team while she was finishing her training (and we consider ourselves fortunate that she landed in our practice.) She brings an amazing mix of personality, fun and skill to the practice.
Kristi is a long time Portlander with more than 20 years of orthodontic experience.Because shes worn every possible hat in an orthodontic office, she knows what it takes to care for our patients well. Outside of the office Kristienjoys spending time with her husband of 30 years and her two grown children.

The most important part of treatment is the plan. Dr. Joe takes the time with each patient to ask the right questions (and answer any questions you have) so we understand your issues and goals. We combine careful listening with advanced diagnostics to develop an individualized treatment plan that works for you.
If braces are recommended, patients should expect to come in about every 8 weeks for adjustments and an assessment of how theyre progressing along the plan. They should also continue to see their general dentist every six months for regular cleanings.
