Dr. Vurnakes joined BlueWave in 2018, excited to return to his hometown of Wilmington, NC. After graduating from NC State University, David worked as a dental assistant to confirm his interest in dentistry as a profession before going on to attend East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine. One of his most rewarding experiences during dental school was serving in the NC Missions of Mercy dental clinics throughout NC. After graduating dental school, David chose to move to the coastal community of Morehead City where he worked in a solo dental practice for several years.
Dentistry is Davids passion as it fuses health, science, and art. Davids goal in dentistry is to promote his patients overall health while also helping them achieve a beautiful smile. Like Dr. Biggerstaff, Dr. Vurnakes is committed to quality continuing education completing over 100 hours a year of dental CE since graduating dental school. He has participated in some of the same prestigious programs such as the Pankey Institute, Spear Education, Triangle Dental Institute Dental Implant continuum, and the Seattle Study Club. David also sees dentistry as a pathway for service and giving back to the community. Since his time as a dental assistant, he has spent years volunteering with the NC Missions of Mercy dental clinics, NC Baptist Mens Dental Bus and other local organizations. Davids core values of faith, honesty, integrity and treating every patient with respect as if they were a member of his own family reflect those of BlueWave.
Outside of dentistry, David loves being near the water from fishing, paddle boarding, and boating to just relaxing. He also enjoys golf and music and grew up playing the piano, learning several other instruments as well. Davids latest adventure is his new Golden Retriever puppy, Jerry. He has hopes of training him to be a therapy dog but will be happy just playing fetch on the beach.

I haven't been to the dentist in a while. I have anxiety about everything and especially about going to the dentist. However, I find myself actually looking forward to going back great people. It feels like they care and actually want to help you.

HAVE BEEN GOING TO BLUEWAVE DENTISTRY SINCE WE MOVED TO LELAND 9 YRS. AGO. NO DOUBT ABOUT IT, IN MY MIND THEY ARE THE BEST. EVERYONE IS SO VERY FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL. SERVICE IS GREAT AND DR/ BIGGERSTAFF IS EXCELLENT.

I don't recall how I landed at Blue Wave Dentistry! Whoever or what ever it was that sent me there....a thousand THANKS!!!! The experience feels like putting on a most comfortable pair of PJs, propping yourself up in bed with a good book, and burying yourself in sweet pleasure!! They are warm, well-informed, and have created an atmosphere that feels much like a family gathering! Anyone in search of great dental care would do well to check them out!! My favorite hygienist ever is Brittany at BlueWave!!!! She is totally thorough, my teeth feeling sparkling clean very time I visit. This time she introduced me to the "sand blasting" cleaning. Not terribly comfortable but it was worth it. My teeth are bright and unstained. Not only is she completely competent in her job but she has an incredibly fun and pleasant personality.

First off the staff was very accommodating, patient, and knowledgeable. A very methodical process, and for all that was done on my first visit, I was in and out without feeling like a number in great time. Highly recommend this office for your dental needs!

From the front door to the end this is an extremely friendly and welcoming office. My Hygienist, Lauren Thompson, is wonderful. She is gentle and thorough, with not only a clear understanding of her profession but a good sense of humor. I feel well cared for!

Excellent dental practice in Brunswick Forest. Multiple visits now for checkups and crowns, never sat in waiting area more than 5 minutes. Went yesterday, showed up a little early, Lauren my dental health professional was right on time. Her chair side manner and gentle work are wonderful. Dr.Vurnakes exam was efficient and friendly. He and Dr. Biggerstaff are the best dentists I've had in decades.
