UPDATE: we have been coming to Dr. Gavin for the past few years. I brought my new baby (almost one year old!). Everything was SO smooth! No stress!!! Im telling all my friends and cousins to bring their kids to Dr. Gavin now LOL because of as a mom, my kids' comfort and health matter. My older kids still love coming here too, because it is such a positive experience. I am keeping my review I wrote a few year ago below, because I still feel the same way and I love this office. Im so happy i finally found a great dentist for my kids! When i complained about our previous dentist, my pediatrician spoke highly of Dr Gavin Uchida. This is NOT the same office as Dr Clyde Uchida in Kahala mall. So dont get confused! This one is in the 3660 restaurant building (2nd floor) Making an appointment was real easy. Then Dr Gavin himself called to find out about my kids' dental needs with in 2-3 days before the appointment. So when we walked in the office I was already pretty relaxed. This office is very clean, cute and calming. And personal! At our previous dentist office, I felt like we were just numbers. But this office treated me like we have known them for years. My kids said Dr Gavin is much gentler than other dentists they tried before. They also said he was funny and nice. Dr Gavin explained all treatment options first and made sure I understood and agreed on everything. It was so refreshing to finally talk to a dentist who communicates to me. When we returned for the 2nd appointment, my kids were happy to return. (They were never like that with other offices) I feel like telling everyone they need to try this office.

My experience at Blue Whale with Dr Gavin was definitely a 5 star. Super clean office. It feels very calm and relaxing like a spa, and kids friendly and safe at the same time.... You get 100% personal attention here, which is very different from other dentist offices. I highly recommend this office who are looking for high quality health care for their children.

Best experience ever! My 2 year old son fell and cracked a tooth on his first day of school but I didn't get a call from the school until hours later. Dr Gavin saw us that night, after hours. The tooth was cracked in the bone and I was worried we would have to pull it, but with some local anesthetic and some calming music Dr Gavin saved the tooth. Simply amazing! The cracked tooth fell out naturally 4 years later with the adult tooth coming in beautifully, unharmed. Extremely caring, very knowledgeable professional, and very good with communication. We don't have insurance, and the service was first class and worth every penny. Highly recommended for anyone wanting personalized service and expertise.

I live in Waimea and found Blue Whale Dentistry/ Dr. Gavin Uchida to be extremely unprofessional in business. I basically got ripped off with hidden fees, As if he doesn't charge an exorbitant amount already. First of all he does not give you an itemized billing statement at time of payment. Second, if your kid cries, you will be charged an additional $90 fee called "Behavior management" (keep in mind we were only there for 20 min) Never once did he mention anything to me about this. I only found out weeks later when I got my statement from HMSA that this fee was included. He is a crook and scam artist and when I confronted him about these charges he said he did me a favor and tried to turn it around on me and my daughter, so add manipulator to that list. What he did to my family is wrong. Our small town of Waimea is full of good honest people who deserve to be treated better and not be stolen from. Communication and transparency is what should have been provided. Fees that are discretionary should be disclosed to parent at time of visit. Bottom Line!!

We have been going to Dr. Uchida for about 5 years. The office atmosphere is very relaxing and calm. Dr. Uchida is very knowledgeable, caring, and patient. Highly recommend him.

Just took my 6 y/o to have a tooth removed (asymmetrical bottom teeth.) Zero tears. It was amazing.

We have been going to Blue Whale for over 5 years and have always had great experiences. We have "anxious " children and Dr. Uchida is extremely patient and gentle with them. From the moment we walk in to the office we feel at ease. Thank you for taking such great care of our girls!!!!

We are so happy to have found Blue Whale Dentistry for our kids! We feel that Dr. Uchida really cares about his patients and does what is best for them rather than pushing unnecessary procedures. This is opposite of what we have experienced in the past. I like it that Dr. Uchida takes time to teach my kids about the importance of dental hygiene in a way they will actually listen! My kids actually don't dread going to the dentist since they have become patients here and they feel very comfortable with the dentist and staff. We've recommended Blue Whale already to many of our friends.

Our family was only a few minutes late for our last appointment because of a horrible traffic accident. While standing in the pay parking lot, attempting to stuff dollar bills in a slot way too small, the dentist calls me to cancel all services with our kids. Shockingly rude, unprofessional and uncompassionate. We'd never missed an appt. before or been late. Of course after I'd already driven 40 minutes in bad traffic from my home to get there. Parking is very inconvenient at this location and the lot charges $6, no matter how long you're there. (Flat rate fee only, not a prorated lift gate). My husband kept telling me to find a better dentist but I kept wanting to give them the benefit of the doubt. Now I know why. My husband was right, so happy he was too. We've found an amazing new dentist that understands Honolulu traffic issues and with free parking on the first floor. There were also several times I'd drop by and no one was there. I'd visited or came by at different times, on weekdays during AM and PM, no one around and with a locked door and lights off. There was no note they were at lunch or otherwise. I've also called many times during their listed 8-6 business hours and no answer. Why doesn't he have a receptionist? Very unprofessional in my opinion.

I had heard amazing things about this office and decided to bring my almost 2 year old daughter for her first dental visit while we were visiting. I am SO glad I did! The entire experience was stress free but most importantly very informative! Dr. Gavin is magic with kids. My daughter was freaked out when we got there but got so comfortable she literally didn't want to leave after her appointment. He was able to examine her and give us practical tips on how to take the best care of her tiny teeth. Turns out she has a lip tie, he explained what it is and what it means in really clear terms and we have an action plan in place. I wish he treated adults!!

Outstanding with my five year old. My son has been going to "Uncle Gavin," since he was three. He got my boy enjoying brushing his teeth and my son never gives fits about going to the dentist. Dr. Gavin and his team always make sure to calm any nerves my child may have and encourages my child through the entire experience.

My son has never been so comfortable with any doctor or dentist. He was laid back and easygoing but, absolutely knew what he was doing. My son is almost 4yrs old & whole time he had a smile on his face! I couldn't believe what an easy visit!!! Adorable & super clean office, totally for kiddos! My husband got home from work, first thing my son told him was that he went to the dentist today & it was cool! I highly recommend to anyone & everyone! Thank you for making my (nervous around Dr's) child so comfortable!!! :) see you for the next visit!!!!
