Following dental school, Dr. Tipton received specialty training in the field of orthodontics at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center. While attending the graduate orthodontics program in Oklahoma, he earned his Master of Science degree and a certificate in orthodontics. He was also recognized at the 2007 American Association of Orthodontists annual meeting for his thesis titled Nasal Surface Changes Attributed to Rapid Palatal Expansion.
