Dr.Bagby did her undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana. She received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Tennessee, Memphis, in 1988. She practiced general dentistry in the Air Force until 1997, obtaining the rank of Major. She was awarded a post graduate degree from the Air Force at Wilford Hall/University of Texas, San Antonio in 1997.

There are many misconceptions surrounding root canal (endodontic) treatment and whether patients experience root canal pain. The American Association of Endodontists wants you to have accurate information. As always, when considering any medical procedure, you should get as much information as you can about all of your options. Your dentist or endodontist can answer many of your questions, and if you still have concerns, it is often wise to seek a second opinion.

The perception of root canals being painful began decades ago but with modern technologies and anesthetics, root canal treatment today is no more uncomfortable than having a filling placed. In fact, a recent survey showed that patients who have experienced root canal treatment are six times more likely to describe it as painless than patients who have not had root canal treatment. Most patients see their dentist or endodontist when they have a severe toothache. The toothache can be caused by damaged tissues in the tooth. Root canal treatment removes this damaged tissue from the tooth, thereby relieving the pain you feel.

The myth: Patients searching the Internet for information on root canals may find sites claiming that teeth receiving root canal (endodontic) treatment contribute to the occurrence of illness and disease in the body. This false claim is based on long-debunked and poorly designed research performed nearly a century ago by Dr. Weston A. Price, at a time before medicine understood the causes of many diseases. In the 1920s, Dr. Price advocated tooth extraction, the most traumatic dental procedure, over endodontic treatment. This resulted in a frightening era of tooth extraction both for treatment of systemic disease and as a prophylactic measure against future illness. The truth: There is no valid, scientific evidence linking root canal-treated teeth and disease elsewhere in the body. A root canal is a safe and effective procedure. When a severe infection in a tooth requires endodontic treatment, that treatment is designed to eliminate bacteria from the infected root canal, prevent reinfection of the tooth and save the natural tooth.

  • The presence of bacteria in teeth and the mouth has been an accepted fact for many years. But the presence of bacteria does not constitute infection and is not necessarily a threat to a persons health. Bacteria are present in the mouth and teeth at all times, even in teeth that have never had a cavity or other trauma. Research shows that the healthy immune system takes care of bacteria in a matter of minutes.
  • Tooth extraction is a traumatic procedure and is known to cause a significantly higher incidence of bacteria entering the bloodstream; endodontic treatment confined to the root canal system produces much less trauma and a much lower incidence and magnitude of bacteria entering the blood stream.
  • There is no adequate replacement for the natural toothit should be saved whenever possible. Root canal treatment, along with appropriate restoration, is a cost effective way to treat infected teeth because it is usually less expensive than extraction and placement of an implant. In most cases, endodontic treatment allows patients to keep their natural teeth for a lifetime.
  • TruthSaving your natural teeth, if possible, is the very best option. Nothing can completely replace your natural tooth. An artificial tooth can sometimes cause you to avoid certain foods. Keeping your own teeth is important so that you can continue to enjoy the wide variety of foods necessary to maintain the proper nutrient balance in your diet. If your dentist recommends extraction, ask whether root canal treatment is an option.

Endodontic treatment, along with appropriate restoration, is a cost-effective way to treat teeth with damaged pulp and is usually less expensive than extraction and placement of a bridge or an implant.

Placement of a bridge or an implant will require significantly more time in treatment and may result in further procedures to adjacent teeth and supporting tissues. Millions of healthy endodontically treated teeth serve patients all over the world, years and years after treatment. Those healthy teeth are helping patients chew efficiently, maintain the natural appearance of their smiles and enhance their enjoyment of life. Through endodontic treatment, endodontists and dentists worldwide enable patients to keep their natural teeth for a lifetime.

Yes, indeed, a root canal can be painless! Dr. Bagby and her assistant were pleasant and kind. They explained the what and why of almost every step of the procedure. There were no surprises. Without hesitation, I highly recommend Dr.Bagby and Blue Ridge Endodontics.

Dr. Mar and the team at Blue Ridge Endodontics did a fantastic job! My first root canal so I was rather nervous. She was very reassuring and encouraging throughout the entire procedure which helped ease my initial fear quit a bit. I did not feel any discomfort the entire procedure except for the initial "pinch" when they first shot me with the nova cane. After the procedure that evening, once the nova cane wore off, I was able to eat and drink again normally. I noticed that evening the pain I had felt from the tooth abscess which was the reason for my root canal was now completely gone and remains gone a week after the procedure. Thanks again Dr. Mar and team. : ) I plan to always come to you for my Endodontic needs in the future.

Receptionists were pleasant. Cymric, tech ass't, was amazingly kind and helpful and took my x-rays. I agreed to allow a dental student observe. Dr. Robin Bagby did the root canal and explained every step of the procedure. She even called my dentist to insure she would do what would make his next steps easiest. She was both professional and personable throughout the procedure, and explained practical post-treatment care that went beyond a brochure that was provided to me. She and Cymric put me completely at ease and I am very confident that their work was a complete success! I cannot be more pleased!

Had a root canal. First time having a root canal and to me it didn't seem much different than getting a tooth filled. I am currently still numb so I can't describe any pain or discomfort yet. Everyone was nice and made sure to let me know everything that was going on. Definitely recommend them if you are in need of these kind of services.

I am very grateful to Blue Ridge Endodontics, who saved me from unbearable pain when my dentist office would not help me. I had a huge infection and abscess. It was so bad that Dr. Mar had to help me fight the infection and reduce the swelling before she could do the root canal. She, Kathy, Cymric, and the administrative staff were all wonderful, very kind, professional, and effective. I highly recommend BRE.

Dr Bagby is GREAT! The whole staff is so kind! I got in a car wreck and the airbag hit my mouth, and one of my front teeth turned a dark gray and I hated it! But she did my root canal and bleaching, and it's white as can be now! I have a hard time getting numb during procedures, but they were very understanding and patient to make sure I was comfortable, and when I went home I had no pain at all! Highly recommend this group!

As someone with a lifelong fear of dental procedures, if you need a root canal, Dr. Bagby, and her assistant, Kathy, are the team you want. From the moment you sit in the chair, you're encouraged to relax, taking your shoes off, having a neck pillow, warm blanket, squishy tooth stress ball...fully explained the process in great detail, and didn't mind that I blasted music through my headphones the entire time. Dr. Bagby, (a referral from my dentist who is also terrific, Dr. Michele Mills), was AWESOME!

Went for a root canal and was told that I didn't need it and should get the tooth pulled by my dentist. Honest and friendly staff and highly recommend.

Dr. Mar and the staff were absolutely wonderful! I needed emergency treatment while visiting from out of town. They were able to work me in, provided excellent care, and made the process essentially painless.

I recently had my first root canal and was very nervous. The assistant who worked with Dr. Mar that day was wonderful and very understanding. She offered a stress ball and blanket to help me feel more relaxed and it was much appreciated. Unfortunately, Dr. Mar spoke to me as if I were a child, in a very condescending tone. Throughout the procedure, she hit me in the face with the small mirror 3 times and with the cord of the lamp once. Later, she fussed at me for not leaning back far enough, stating that she would have to go to the chiropractor if she had to bend over much further. A root canal is not a pleasant experience, but it was made far more upsetting and frustrating due to this treatment. A month later, I broke half of the crown off while eating a soft taco. It was a Saturday, so I called the office and left a message on the emergency line. I did not receive a return call at all. I also left a message online and it was responded to on Monday. I haven't experienced this level of unprofessional behavior, ever. I am now a very happy patient of Dr. Garden and highly recommend her practice.

My visit to Blue Ridge Endodontics was as stress-free as such a procedure can be. Faced with the sudden awareness that I could lose a tooth, I was referred to BRE. Dr. Bagby confirmed that the tooth was seriously compromised but then quipped optimistically, "We'll just do what we can." Not only did she save the tooth, the recovery from my root canal was virtually painless. Today, I had a small follow up situation occur, and the team accommodated me on the same day, took care of the situation, and I was on my way in only 12 minutes from appointment time. Amazing service and much appreciated!

Today, I had my first Root Canal! I've had some dental work done in the past but for some reason I was SUPER nervous to have a root canal. Regina Mar DDS & Jenny were AMAZING! Jenny, took her time and explained how the root canal would go and answered all my questions/ concerns. Dr. Mar was amazing! I don't wish to have another Root Canal done lol but if I had to, I would definitely come back to Blue Ridge Endodontics to have it done.

I had a root canal done here on December 29, 2020. It was under a permanent bridge. Dr. Mar did an excellent job. There was no pain during or after the procedure. She has a great "bedside manner" in terms of relaxing a patient. She asked several times if I needed to take a quick break, which I didn't, but appreciated her consideration. In addition, she and the dental assistant Cymric, worked very well as a team. If you are in need of a root canal, I highly recommend Dr. Mar at Blue Ridge Endodontics. Linda Kiebish

I had to get a root canal done. About 40 minutes into my procedure I was told by Dr. Bagby I would have to come back as there was too much infection to finish. They sent me home with Tylenol 3 and I had no idea how much pain I was going to be in the night. I was in so much pain that it was like someone took a hammer and nail to my tooth. They should have knew how much pain I was going to be in before I left but they did not care. After calling in the morning explaining my pain they were not going to give me anything stronger and Michael J. Mayerchak just laughed at me over the phone. If you think this will not happen to you then you are wrong. Please do not use them they are not professional and do not care about you.

Soooo, if having a root canal could ever be considered a great experience, this is the place to go and have this procedure done! Dr. Bagby and her staff (Christi was the assistant in my visit) were absolutely amazing from start to finish. They make you feel as comfortable as one can be while going through this, from letting you choose what music you listen to (seriously, pick a specific band or artist and it plays the entire time), to explaining what is going to happen and then what is going to happen after it's all done. Dr. Bagby talked me through the procedure and actually ended my visit with an awesome joke to make me laugh (how is this possible you're thinking, but it happened). I was not looking forward to this procedure at all, but their professionalism and concern for my well being were above reproach. If I ever need any further treatment in the future, they are the only ones I will be visiting. Thank you so much!!!
