While at the University of Washington, Dr. Black was well trained in dental implant surgery including full mouth implant rehabilitation, bone and sinus reconstruction, surgical and orthodontic crown lengthening, soft tissue reconstruction as well as other periodontal plastic surgical procedures. Dr. Black was selected as a finalist for the VOLPE International Periodontal Research Competition at The Ohio State University. The VOLPE competition is for the best clinical research in periodontology by students in dentistry, where she placed third. Her research focused on peri-implantitis, a condition where implants undergo bone loss following bacterial infection. She examined the efficacy of various decontamination methods as well as the effects whether those methods can increase bone loss.

Dr. Black was recently selected as one of four clinical research finalists at the Balint Orban Memorial Award. The renowned competition has been a featured even at the American Academy of Periodontologys Annual Meeting since 1960 for clinical or basic research presented by periodontal residents.

Dr. Black has dreamed of a career in dentistry since she was very young and is thrilled to begin working in Carmel. New to the community, Dr. Black enjoys jogging, skiing, cooking, traveling and spending time with her family and friends.

Dental implants represent state of the art, standard of care in tooth replacement therapy, making it possible to store the mouth as closely as possible to its natural state and eliminating the need to cut down adjacent teeth for bridgework.

Dental Implants have enhanced the quality of life for countless people throughout the world, improving overall health and well being and restoring the confidence that comes from a natural smile and appearance.

Dental implants are substitute tooth roots. They replace natural tooth roots in areas of the mouth where teeth are missing. When failing teeth are still present, dental implants can often be placed at the very same time as tooth extraction. Implants can replace single teeth, multiple teeth, and/or support full-arch restorations, allowing patients the fit, feel, and function of natural teeth, without the inconvenience or discomfort of removable partials.

Implants also play an important role in maintaining dental health. When teeth are missing, the bone that previously supported those teeth melts away, or deteriorates. This process is called bone resorption.

The impact of deteriorating bone from complete tooth loss includes collapsed facial profiles, lost lip support, increased wrinkles around the mouth and the appearance of a pointed nose and chin that are too close together.

Replacing missing teeth with dental implants stops further bone loss and serves to preserve bone, maintaining the integrity of the facial structure and providing a solid foundation for biting and chewing.

Replacing missing teeth with dental implants is a straightforward process involving teamwork between the surgeon who treatment plans and places the implant or implants, and the restorative dentist who fabricates the crown and bridge work supported by the dental implant(s). The implant is placed by the surgeon, a healing period ensues during which time the bone around the implant bonds to the implant, and a crown is then placed by the restorative doctor.

The staff at BlackBeagle is very friendly, very professional, dedicated to patient care and highly competent. I am a carryover from the Dr. Beagle days and was new to these dentists. One of my capped front teeth broke off unexpectedly and they worked me in immediately and stayed well after hours taking care of me. My subsequent tooth removal and implant placement was performed without any issues. This remains a great practice!

My wife has had implant surgery in the past. She was thrilled at the changes in technology since the last time (10+years)! Dr. Black explained the process and performed the implant surgery with gentleness and skill. The recovery has progressed in a accelerated fashion. The ibuprofen has been helpful. The Stellalife Oral Care kit has also been very affective. Sherry and the other office staff were pleasant to work with. Dr. Black's dental assistant explained the recovery regimen and was very helpful. Dr. Black's follow up, evening call showed concern for my wife. Overall, a rewarding experience, if implant surgery is necessary.

This was my first visit back to this office since Dr. Beagle retired. I was having symptoms of sore teeth/gums and some jaw pain. Dr. Black reviewed my medical/dental history thoroughly before performing the exam, then recommended some possible solutions for the issues I mentioned. I was able to ask questions, and never felt rushed. Also, the office staff was warm and welcoming. I highly recommend this practice.

Jodi is by far the best dental hygienist that has ever cleaned my teeth. She utilized new, state of the art air flow equipment to leave my teeth feeling better than ever. She also paid close attention to my dental history giving me insights into any issues I was having. No dental hygienist has ever done that before.

After waiting 6 weeks for a tooth extraction at another practice and two more weeks to go I had a friend recommend Dr. Kum. I called them desperate to get an infected tooth removed that was making me very uncomfortable. Tracy at the front desk listened to my story and called me back that I could get in that afternoon! I only wish I had called sooner! The staff is friendly , kind and professional. Dr. Kum was extremely thorough in explaining the process and did not rush even though my appointment took him into after hours. The process went smoothly and post surgery minimal discomfort. He gave me his cell number to text or call after the surgery if I had any issues. Highly recommend this amazing practice.

I am writing to thank Dr Jason Kum and staff to thank them for the treatment I received at the end of Dec 2021. I am a retired dentist, and I must say this team was professional, informative and totally pain free. I had no post operative discomfort and minimal swelling after the surgical removal of two maxillary molars in preparation for implants. He was recommended by Dr George Kirtley who is also awesome and restoring my maxillary arch. I would highly recommend both if you are serious about having the best prosthetic / implant team in the Indy area.

Outstanding oral surgeon, Dr Kum sets the standard in painless dental surgery. I lamented for weeks prior to my operation for no good reason; I felt no pain and no had no recollection of the operation. follow up was easy and the staff makes the whole experience enjoyable. My dental extraction and implant surgery was less painful than a filling! If you have any concerns contact me and I'll be happy to tell you how this practice is the ONLY option in Indianapolis for dental work, period.

I've been under the fantastic care of Dr. Kum for 2 years now since an early morning emergency extraction was necessary. I was immediately taken by his kindness, thorough professionalism, and his rare skill of articulating the complex and detailed into the simple, clear and engaging. So refreshing. I always look forward to my appointments with him. I will stay with Dr. Kum as long as this world permits and would highly recommend this special man's considerable talents to anyone. I would also like to pony up five stars for the entire staff at BlackBeagle. From the front of the house to the dental assistants, you are never in doubt about being in capable, caring hands. Moreover, there is a joy and comradery each brings to the mix; you as a patient can't help but feel it from the moment you arrive. Hard to imagine a better, more enjoyable "having to go to the dentist" experience. Great, great folk, from stem to stern. My many, many thanks. Cheers and All Best, Michael Kistler

I have been twice to this office. Once with Dr Beagle to remove a beign grow on my gum and recently with Dr Kum. The office impressed me the first time and continues to do so. The friendly efficient staff are excellent especially during difficult times, so refreshing. Dr Kum listened well, was thorough and explained in as much as he could what he thought would be the best course of action. I am happy to commend this office to anyone. My dentist office equally well run recommended this one. Thankfully for quality health care.

Dr. Black removed my cracked tooth. I am amazed at how little pain I am in after the extraction! I took minimal pain meds and I am not swollen at all. Even the numbing of my mouth before the procedure included minor pain. She is young but very good! I was a bit of a wimp because this is the first tooth I lost but they were very patient with me.
