While serving his country in the United States Army, our founder, Dr. McCarthy, was searching for quality orthodontic treatment for his daughter. To his dismay, he soon discovered that because of high treatment prices and the lack of available financial options (options like no-down payment, lower monthly payments, and interest-free financing), orthodontic procedures were basically unaffordable to most people on military salaries. It was then that Dr. McCarthy decided to dedicate his life toward opening and managing an orthodontic practice with one simple goalto make getting a better smile affordable to everyone. Or, in simpler termsto help his community smile more.

Our mission has remained unchanged since first opening our doorsto provide affordable orthodontic treatment while never sacrificing quality. We believe that anyone who comes inpatients and parentsshould leave our office with a smile. One visit and youll quickly see how serious we are about this missionworking every day to fulfill it through expertise and passion and doing it all with smiles on our faces.

I am frustrated with my experience at Birmingham Orthodontics- Hoover. I had braces in high school and a few teeth shifted over the years that I wanted addressed and a new permanent retainer placed. When I went in for my consult I pointed out a front tooth that had been pushed forward and I wanted moved back. I'm done with treatment now, that tooth is still prominent. I pointed it out at my final appointment and Dr. McCarthy said nothing could be done orthodontically without starting over and then said he could file the profile down. I asked if that was what he recommended, he said he didn't recommend orthodontic treatment and I said ok then he quickly filed the tooth, which I didn't really want. I wish I was given some time to live with it before making the decision to file it. I wasn't happy with my results because they didn't match what I asked for or expected. Sometimes that isn't possible, but I would have liked some communication about realistic outcomes for my treatment and some time to sit with them at the end. I left feeling like my concerns were an irritation and that my tooth was filed out of frustration and not because it was the right thing to do. It has caused me anxiety and that edge now appears gray/translucent. I liked my teeth before and I didn't want them changed or the enamel unnecessarily filed away, I just wanted my teeth put in alignment and I felt like my concerns throughout were ignored and treated as an inconvenience and that my visits were rushed and Dr. McCarthy, while generally pleasant, did not seem to have time for me or my concerns. I also left with black triangle gaps (including a gap between my 2 front teeth) that I did not have before. I had never heard that they were a possible result of orthodontic treatment but when I asked about them I was just told they happen sometimes and it's due to the shape of the gums (one employee told me the trays cause it). I called another orthodontist to see if they could treat them and they said they would do IPR and another adjustment with trays and to go back to my orthodontist since I already paid for treatment there. I don't know why it wasn't offered here, but I received no guidance or suggestions for treating them. It is upsetting to pay a lot of money and months in inconvenient orthodontic treatments to leave with dark gaps in your smile that trap food when you eat, especially when my teeth were alright before and I did not have any. My dentist offered to fill them with filling. They have since snapped off and have to be redone. Some things can't be helped I guess, but a little guidance at the least would have been nice. I had to research on my own and call other dental and orthodontic offices to try to find a solution. My whole treatment plan was 14 weeks and then extended to 28 when the needed correction had not occurred. A few months before the end of my trays I noticed movement in my teeth that was concerning so I called and asked to be able to speak to my orthodontist to see about fixing it. The associate refused to give me an appointment for that and told me I had to wait for my next appointment. At that next appt. I pointed out some concerns and asked about switching to wire braces and Dr. McCarthy told me to finish my last two trays and we could discuss options then. At the following appointment, he took the glue dots off and that was it. I asked about my concerns with my prominent front tooth and the black gaps again and I got the responses mentioned above. My back teeth also do not fully connect. All in all, I felt like my concerns were ignored or dismissed and that I did not and could not receive the communication I needed to feel confident in my treatment or care. If you are thinking about Invisalign vs wire braces and would like input from someone who has had both, I preferred the wire braces and their results.

I'm towards the middle of my braces plan. Originally I enjoyed the customer service, they were able to get my braces on quickly and set up a affordable payment plan. I did not get to choose the plan. I've had several brackets break off after the wires were changed on them. I'm not sure if that was due to them being put on incorrectly. If they require you to have jaw surgery make sure you check with your insurance company to see if they will cover it. Otherwise you'll be stuck waiting to switch your insurance company.

I have gone so back and forth on this review. I hate to say anything negative and I like to give people the benefit of the doubt, but I am honestly frustrated with my experience here. The scheduling staff at Birmingham Orthodontics were very accommodating in getting us in for a consult last minute on an E-learning day. We got in at our desired location with one day notice. Morgan at the Hoover location was great...very pleasant and knowledgeable. The Orthodontist was in and out very quickly and was not the most personable. The pricing was the highest in our shopping of three practices. The pricing packages were also the most complex of the three we explored. Other places offer unlimited emergency visits, bracket replacement, etc for total treatment. You pay one fee. Birmingham Orthodontics has pricing tiers and they charge more based on the level of service you want during the course of treatment.
