Over a period of time, the jawbone associated with missing teeth atrophies and is reabsorbed. This often leaves a condition in which there is poor quality and quantity of bone suitable for the placement of dental implants. In these situations, most patients are not candidates for the placement of dental implants. With bone grafting we now have the opportunity to not only replace bone where it is missing, but we also have the ability to promote new bone growth in that location. This not only gives us the opportunity to place implants of proper length and width, but it also gives us a chance to restore functionality and aesthetic appearance.

Autogenous bone grafts, also known as autografts, are made from your own bone, taken from somewhere else in the body. The bone is typically harvested from the chin, jaw, lower leg bone, hip, or skull. Autogenous bone grafts are advantageous in that the graft material is your own live bone, meaning it contains living cellular elements that enhance bone growth, also eliminating the risk of your body rejecting the graft material since it comes from you.

Allogenic bone, or allograft, is dead bone harvested from a cadaver, then processed using a freeze-dry method to extract the water via a vacuum. Unlike autogenous bone, allogenic bone cannot produce new bone on its own. Rather, it serves as a framework, or scaffold, over which bone from the surrounding bony walls can grow to fill the defect or void.

Xenogenic bone is derived from non-living bone of another species, usually a cow. The bone is processed at very high temperatures to avoid the potential for immune rejection and contamination. Like allogenic grafts, xenogenic grafts serve as a framework for bone from the surrounding area to grow and fill the void.

Both allogenic and xenogenic bone grafting have an advantage of not requiring a second procedure to harvest your own bone, as with autografts. However, because these options lack autografts bone-forming properties, bone regeneration may take longer than with autografts, and have a less predictable outcome.

This product is processed allograft bone, containing collagen, proteins, and growth factors that are extracted from the allograft bone. It is available in the form of powder, putty, chips, or gel that can be injected through a syringe.

Graft composites consist of other bone graft materials and growth factors to achieve the benefits of a variety of substances. Some combinations may include: collagen/ceramic composite, which closely resembles the composition of natural bone, DBM combined with bone marrow cells, which aid in the growth of new bone, or a collagen/ceramic/autograft composite.

Synthetic materials also have the advantage of not requiring a second procedure to harvest bone, reducing risk and pain. Each bone grafting option has its own risks and benefits. Dr. Lane will determine which type of bone graft material is best suited to your particular needs.

Dr. Jenny Lane is originally from Western North Carolina and graduated in 1996 from A.C. Reynolds High School. She then went on to receive both undergraduate and dental degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2000 and 2004 respectively. Upon completion of dental school, she then entered into a 6 year Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery residency program, whereby she obtained her MD in 2007 and finished residency in 2010 at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. During this time, she received excellent surgical and medical training, including one year of general surgery and 6 months of anesthesiology.

After working several years back home in North Carolina, Dr. Lane decided she was ready to return to Asheville, and Biltmore Oral & Facial Surgery was established. Also, she enjoys spending time with her husband and son.

Best care I've ever received, had to get five teeth extracted(none wisdom, one with a very bad infection) Dr. Lane was able to push my appointment up a week to get me in as I was in a lot of pain. As I was very anxious about the surgery, Doc and her team made me feel calm and confident that I was in great hands. For five teeth being removed it's absolutely astonishing how smooth everything went, I didn't feel a thing during the procedure. Couldn't imagine better place to go! Thank you guys!

The staff were all friendly, and the surgery was quick. They had me under anesthesia for about 15 minutes to remove all 4 of my wisdom teeth. I did have a large bruise on my arm where they injected the anesthesia, and I was offered no medication to help with the pain. Despite calling on 3 separate occasions during aftercare, I was told to take ibuprofen and Tylenol and that it would be just as effective. It was not. I was in so much pain I couldn't sleep for 3 days. There is absolutely no follow through or aftercare for their patients. All they cared about was making sure the bill was completely settled after my insurance. Only go here if you have absolutely no other choice, and be prepared to take care of yourself after surgery.

I was experiencing nasty dental pain. And it had gone on too long. . I was fearful of anyone touching that tooth and exhausted. New to the area. The staff that helped me before the extraction, the hygenists, were compassionate and supportive. I have never cried in a dentist/ oral surgeons office before, but I felt safe enough to allow myself .And that helped. The oral surgeon was skilled, competent and exuded confidence. So I had soft touch from the hygienists and skilled care from surgeon. Good team.

I was very worried about my 84 year old mother getting a lower wisdom tooth removed. Everything went excellent from the consult to the removal. The procedure was less than 30 minutes. Everyone in the office was so nice, professional and friendly. Thank you God, Dr. Lane, and your amazing staff!

Because my dentist at Rockcliff had recently retired (Dr. Parworth) and Rockcliff having no availability for over a month, I had to select another dentist as I needed an emergency extraction for an infected tooth. Dr. Lane's office had a cancelation and I was able to get in quickly with the highest hopes for a positive experience. It was a terrible experience. The extraction was much more difficult than Dr. Lane had expected and all they had administered was a numbing injection for the procedure. Throughout the painful process tugging down at the tooth, Dr. Lane was short and curt with zero bedside manner. After the tooth was finally out she quickly exited the room, leaving her assistant to let me know that was a difficult extraction (no kidding) trying to smooth things over for her boss. Dr. Lane and her team of young inexperienced women lacking any warmth or friendliness whatsoever are a major disappointment and I wished I would have never stepped foot in that office.

Dr. Lane and her team could not be more professional. They all took the time I needed to for me to understand my options, feel comfortable and confident in the plan we decided to move forward with. When it came to surgery all went as smooth as possible. I can not recommend Dr. Lane and her operation more. Asheville is lucky to have such a wonderful office to turn to when needed.

One would always categorically think getting dental work would be unpleasant, but considering the circumstances, my visit to Biltmore Oral was quiet pleasant. I was seen on time both visits same when taken back, I wasn't sitting for 30 minutes before I was seen. My procedure went smooth. I was told what to expect and it went as told. I found all the staff helpful, polite, and professional. I recommend Biltmore Oral to anyone who just needs to get some dental work done as efficiently and professionally as possible.

Dr. Lane and her staff were exceedingly professional and kind. As an older person I was very apprehensive about my wisdom tooth extraction but was soon at ease with the procedure. I am recovering on point and am grateful for this positive experience.

I've had two separate visits for wisdom teeth extractions, one under sedation and one with only local anesthetic. Both times were fantastic, quick, and completely painless. Dr. Lane and staff are the very best!

Dr Lane and her staff have done an excellent job with my procedures. They made me feel comfortable and Dr Lane checked on how I was doing throughout the process. The office is very well run and so far for all my visits the the staff was very efficient and sensitive to my needs and I never had to wait more than a few minutes before being seen. I am also grateful for their COVID-19 Protocols which made me feel safe.
