Dr. Bill Akin grew up in Columbia, TN, just south of Nashville. He attended Columbia public schools until the 7th grade, when he enrolled in Columbia Military Academy, as a day student. He was Valedictorian of his senior class and voted Most Likely To Succeed. He graduated from Vanderbilt University where he was involved with ROTC and a Varsity Cheerleader. He graduated in 1973 from the UT Dental School in Memphis . Upon graduating from Vanderbilt, Dr. Akin was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army. After graduation from Dental School, he served as a Captain in the US Army Dental Corps.

Dr. Akin practiced as a general dentist at Ft. Gordon, Augusta Ga, for 1 yr, 9 months, and 13 days. Having developed an interest in periodontics in dental school, Dr. Akin enrolled in a Periodontal Residency Program at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. On completion of this advanced training, Dr. Akin returned home to Nashville. Dr. Akin incorporated dental implants to his practice in 1982. He has practiced in Nashville for over thirty years and has enjoyed getting to know and treat patients from Nashville and surrounding areas.

He has been active in the Nashville Dental Society serving as President, President of the Tn Society of Periodontists, Past President of the Southern Academy of Periodontics, and served two terms as a Trustee from the Southeast Region for the American Academy of Periodontics. Dr. Akin is involved in several local dental study groups and was last year invited to join the prestigious, International Society of Periodontal Plastic Surgeons. His wife of 40 years, Sheila, is a former Dental Hygienist and they have two children, Will and Elizabeth. Elizabeth is graduating from Samford University this year and his son, Will, joined him in his periodontal practice, four years ago. Dr. Akin enjoys practicing with his son Will, and misses his retired partner, Dr. Irwin Hodes.

The Nashville Periodontal Group was founded in 1982 with the merger of Dr. Bill Akin and Dr. Irwin Hodes individual practices. In this last six years, the Nashville Periodontal Group has added new technology with Cone Beam X-ray units in both offices. These state of the art machines provide 3-D imaging similar to a Cat Scan. Dr. Akin and West have acquired Millenium Dental Lasers that allow the treatment of periodontal conditions with minimal discomfort and excellent results. These technologies have changed the practice of dentistry and increased the quality of care. The doctors are committed to keeping up to date with technology that they feel will be of benefit to their patients. Both the Nashville and Brentwood offices are fully equipped with 3-D imaging and laser therapy. The doctors are proud that they are leaders in their field.

Dr. Will Akin was born and raised in Nashville, TN. With a dentist for a father and a dental hygienist for a mother, the world of dentistry was all around him. After graduating from Montgomery Bell Academy, Dr. Akin attended Samford University in Birmingham, AL where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration. He then attended the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in Memphis, TN. After graduating from Dental School, Dr. Akin continued his education with a Residency in Periodontology at the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, MA. During his 3-year residency, he trained and developed his surgical proficiency in Soft Tissue Management and the placement of Dental Implants. After completing his residency, he returned to Nashville to join the Nashville Periodontal Group. Dr. Akin has also achieved the status of a Board Certified Diplomate with the American Board of Periodontology.

Dr. Akin has a great passion for continuing education attending yearly courses and meetings, while studying the most current literature to make sure that the treatments rendered at NPG remain on the cutting edge. A lover of dental photography, Dr. Akin documents every patients case so that he can analyze every case to the fullest extent. While he is member of multiple dental study clubs, he currently is the Director of the Nashville ITI Implant Study Club. The ITI (International Team for Implantology) is a worldwide network dedicated to furthering the field of Implant Dentistry amongst all dental professionals. Dr. Akin also serves on the American Academy of Periodontologys National Task Force for Consumer Awareness.

Dr. Akin, his wife, Whitney, and their Labrador, Lorelai, live in Nashville where they attend Covenant Presbyterian Church. In his spare time, Dr. Akin has a vast enthusiasm for music and playing guitar.

Dr. Brian West is a native of North Mississippi. His desire to be a dentist extends back to his childhood. His exposure to dentistry came early with multiple family role models. Two uncles were dentists and his older sister was a dental hygienist who taught at the dental school. He graduated from Ripley High School in 1985. He then attended the University of Mississippi where he pursued degrees in both Biology and English. Dr. West left Ole Miss to attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry. It was while at dental school, that he was exposed to the speciality of periodontics. Showing great propensity in the field, he won the Dental Colleges Presidents award in periodontics for excellence in periodontics as a dental student. During his time in Dental school, he served as President of the Student Government and multiple other offices. He graduated from dental school in 1993. Upon completing his Dental degree, he continued his training, receiving his specialist certificate in Periodontics in 1995 from UAB School of Dentistry.

Dr. West began his career in Periodontics in 1995, joining the Nashville Periodontal Group, where he continues to serve today. He is active in various organizations, including his church, the boy scouts, and other professional organizations. He is a member of the American Dental Association, American Academy of Periodontology, Southern Academy of Periodontology, Nashville Dental Society, and various local dental study clubs. He serves presently as an officer in the Southern Academy of Periodontology, as well as the Nashville Dental Society. Dr. West has served as Chairman of the Board of the Interfaith Dental Clinic in Nashville, a charity clinic for the working poor, where he volunteers his time and expertise to this day.

Dr. West has been married for over twenty years to his wife Joanna. They have and two children, a daughter Rachel, and a son William. They live in Brentwood, Tennessee, where their children attend school.
