We have exacting standards for our practice, which form the cornerstone of our philosophy of providing excellence in every aspect of patient care. We follow strict protocols for sterilization of instruments, we complete continuing education courses to stay apprised of the latest in information and techniques, and we use the newest available equipment for evaluations and treatments.

Dr. Bierly founded his Simsbury Periodontal practice in 1976. His primary interests in practice are bone grafting and connective tissue grafts. He is a graduate of Dickinson College, where he earned a B.S. in Biology. He was awarded the 1902 Award as the outstanding junior and the O.D.K Award as the outstanding junior. He served as president of the junior and senior honoraries. He then earned his dental degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. There he received honors in both Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry and was elected class president to the Dean's council.

Following dental school, Dr. Bierly served two years on active duty in the U.S. Army Dental Corps and received the Commandment's Award for his distinguished service. He received his specialty training in Periodontology at the West Los Angeles VA Hospital through the University of Southern California. With his fellow residents he published three papers in the Journal of Periodontology on bone grafting and the cryopreservation of bone.

Dr. Bierly taught at the University of Southern California and later served on the teaching staff at St. Francis Hospital. He also is a dental staff member of the McLean Home in Simsbury and has chaired the Continuing Education Committee of the Hartford Dental Society. Dr. Bierly is a co-founder of both the Farmington Valley Dental Hygiene Study Club and the Consortium for Dental Excellence. He is a frequent lecturer at these study clubs.

Dr. Bierly has an abiding interest in education. At Dickinson College he served two terms on the alumnae council and served as the alumnae president for two additional years. He helped found the Alumnae Scholarship Fund and was awarded the Outstanding Alumnus Award in 1994. He along with his wife Judith established the John and Judy Bierly Scholarship Fund.

Dr. Peterson graduated from Vassar College in 1978 and received his D.M.D. degree from Tufts University in 1982. Following graduation he completed a General Practice Residency at the VA Medical Center in Salt Lake City and then served three years on active duty as a general dentist in the US Air Force.

Dr. Peterson then completed a two-year specialty residency in Periodontics at the VA Medical Center in Indianapolis and earned his Master's Degree from Indiana University. Upon completing his specialty training, Dr. Peterson moved back to New England and joined the periodontal practice of Dr. John A. Bierly. His primary interests in practice are esthetic and cosmetic periodontal surgeries, as well as bone grafting procedures to prepare sites for dental implants. In addition to private practice, Dr. Peterson has been on the attending staff at St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center since 1989.

A firm believer in continuing education he not only attends many courses each year but actively participates in teaching the General Practice Residents at St Francis and has twice received the Teacher of the Year Award.

Dr. Peterson is also past-president of the Connecticut Society of Periodontists and the Hartford Dental Society. He currently serves on the Board of Governors of the Connecticut State Dental Association. The Farmington Valley Dental Hygiene Study Club and the Consortium for Dental Excellence were confounded by Dr. Peterson.

Dr. Peterson has two grown sons and lives with his wife in West Hartford. He enjoys outdoor activities with his family, particularly skiing and backpacking. Dr. Peterson is an active member of Saint James Episcopal Church in West Hartford.

Dr. Sorrentino graduated from Villanova University with a B.S. degree in Biology and a minor in English. He also played for the mens ice hockey team and was an Academic All-American. After completing four years of undergraduate studies and athletics at Villanova, Dr. Sorrentino moved to Manhattan and earned his degree in dentistry from New York University College of Dentistry.

After four years of dental school, Dr. Sorrentino was accepted into a three year specialty residency in Periodontics at the Department of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry at New York University. After his specialty training in periodontics and implant dentistry, Dr. Sorrentino moved back to Connecticut where he joined the private practices of Drs. Bierly and Peterson in Farmington, Avon, and Simsbury. His primary interests in practice are immediate implant placement and immediate implant restorations

Dr. Sorrentino is published as a primary author in the Journal of Periodontology, the official scientific publication of the American Academy of Periodontology. He has developed surgical techniques and presented research involving sinus grafting, dental implants, and soft tissue grafting at several national and international dental meetings in Sweden (Europerio) and Poland (European Association for Osseointegration).
