This is an exceptionally run dental office. They got me in and out in 45-minutes. I had X-rays done, a consultation, and a full cleaning done. I used to go to an expensive dentist over in Pac Heights/Marina, and now I feel silly that I didn't find this place sooner. Thanks for the great experience!

I accidentally showed up to my appointment on the wrong day and the receptionist was so kind and told me she'd see if they could squeeze me in. Dr. Nguyen was able to take me and was so extremely caring, personable, accommodating and knowledgeable. Best experience I've ever had at a dentist office!

Dr Litterman is amazing! If your looking for the best service and quality dentistry then you will be happy to know you just struck gold by finding Dr. Litterman. Dr Litterman really knew how to put my nerves to ease and she made me feel very comfortable by going out of her way to make sure I didn't feel rushed or experience any discomfort or pain. To be honest, I felt like family and that level of care is so hard to find now a days. I was amazed that she cleaned my teeth and filled a cavity and I never felt any discomfort! I could tell that her office is set up to make her patents feel relaxed, comfortable and she even had headphones to distract me. Her gentle, professional approach really made my fears melt away and before I knew it I had sparkling clean teeth, a fixed cavity and a beautiful smile. I also loved the staff who where all friendly and helpful and the office space felt calm and beautiful. If your looking for the best dentist in San Francisco who genuinely cares for your health in a beautiful relaxing environment then I would highly recommend you schedule an appointment with Dr Litterman at Bernal Heights Smiles!

BE AWARE! The strongly positive reviews made before January 2019 are for the prior dentist, Dr Alivia. The new dentist who bought practice and uses same practice name, Dr Litterman, is awful. Not competent work, not ethical/honest and very poor time management; very hard to schedule appointments- which you'll need to do a lot, since she can't finish work even if you allow two or more hours. I went 6/20 for what was supposed to be a "short appointment" to assess broken tooth needing a crown (top) and a chip/filling restoration (bottom) Two and a half hours later told me they'd run out of time to do the filling, due to messing around forever with a temporary crown. Made me late for my next appointment since "short appointment" to me didn't mean two and a half hours; with half the work not even done. Temp crown then fell off after less than 3 days, when I was merely eating a chip. I'd been super careful about eating on other side & nothing hard. Dr.Litterman blamed it on my tooth grinding at night; though it'd been only two nights since it was glued on. Tried Monday AM call for appointment to re-glue but seems they're closed Mondays, last appointment is 3:30 and they had no opening until three weeks later when I already had the follow up appointment I'd already had scheduled to get perm crown cemented and the e-schedule for the simple filling. Yep three weeks later was soonest they could give me. Blamed the holiday (that's only one day..) When I arrived 7/12; right on time; I asked how long appointment would be because I had timed parking. Was told an hour. After one half hour gluing perm crown on; Dr Litterman said she'd again run out of time to do the filling. Also, because I was not satisfied with the fact the color of the crown was VERY off, I shouldn't come back at all. They didn't match the color of my existing teeth when they made the crown. The crown was bright white and my teeth are definitely ivory, in part from coffee/tea. Dentist tried to claim I had chosen the color, which is ridiculous. The assistant has a card she holds up to your teeth and she matches the color. Forced me- very unethically- to sign a waiver while dentist literally held my tooth/crown hostage in palm of her hand. She refused to glue it on unless I signed that I was satisfied. Only alternative was wait another 2 or even more weeks ( since so hard to get an appointment with them) to have them re-make the crown . That would have been 5-6 weeks total to get a crown cemented- and no guarantee the new crown would be better color since first one so far off. As soon as I signed, she announced I was fired as a patient and she was not going to do the filling. So she allotted an hour for appointment, gave me half an hour and told me she wasn't going to finish the work; do the simple chip/filling I'd already had two appointments for. Because she "had other patients". Of course, not having the "other patient" run a mere 10 minutes late is more important than me having to come back again?! She blamed her poor time management on the temporary crown "needing adjustment" and taking half an hour instead of 20 minutes. How can you schedule so tightly so as not to allow time to finish the planned work- if, as she claimed, it is normal to have to "adjust" the poorly fitting crown? If that is an expected complication, why would she not have allowed time for that? Not good sign to manage time so poorly that you can't finish the job and keep making the patient return (or NOT!!). I think she is very inexperienced and honestly doesn't really know what she's doing, which is a bad thing in a solo practice- that is trying to ride on the reputation of prior business owner!

I recommended this practice to my roommate, not knowing about the change in ownership, and he had a TERRIBLE experience, which I now feel embarrassed about. Appointments now require 48 hours notice, otherwise it's a $75 fee. I understand needing advance notice to not lose paid business but the amount of lead time and the penalty is ridiculous. When protesting the policy because he needed to reschedule, the receptionist was very rude and said something to the effect of "Well, I guess you shouldn't come here then, and it's up to you not to prioritize the appointment." That's already an appalling customer experience, but when my roommate understandly decides not to cancel, and reshuffles things to make the appointment... the DENTIST IS NOT AVAILABLE. He completes the work with the hygienist but then has to COME BACK the next day to see the dentist. What?? After having such a strict cancelation policy, the dentist can just not show up, and not offer anything in return? Absurd. I highly do NOT recommend this place.

Staff at BHS well exceeded my limited knowledge and expectation to my dental clinic experiences. Staffs were friendly and well-trained; address you by name when you walk in, and are well aware of your schedule and even what your insurance covers. Their setup is amazing. They've done x-ray just right at the bench station; they even give you control over an Apple TV during your treatment. One honest thing I would point out though: they don't necessarily have all they need for maxillofacial related issues (they can easily refer you!) if that's a big concern you may have regarding your dental health.
