People with chronic bad breath (halitosis) may have gum disease or other oral health problems. Microbial deposits on the tongue and colonies of bacteria and food debris under inflamed gums are some of the most common causes of bad breath. Getting treatment for gum disease and maintaining healthy teeth and gums with a diligent oral care routine can help you maintain fresh breath.
One of our board certified periodontists, Dr. Ryan Horn, Dr. Barron Hong, Dr. Meetu Moody and Dr. Anand Maharathi may recommend laser gum disease treatment with the diode laser. Other gum disease treatments available from our periodontist in Berkeley, CA, include osseous surgery, scaling and root planing therapy, and a gingivectomy.
Brushing and flossing your teeth regularly can control the plaque and bacteria that causes gum disease. We recommend brushing at least twice a day with an ADA approved soft bristle tooth brush and toothpaste. Electric toothbrushes can be especially effective for removing plaque.
Implant dentistry is a viable option for many patients with missing teeth. Our periodontists specialize in dental implants and may recommend dental implants or implant dentures as part of your treatment plan.
You need to have your teeth checked and cleaned at least once every six months. We may recommend more frequent visits if you have periodontal disease. This visit includes diagnostic digital x-rays, gum disease evaluation, plaque removal, teeth polishing and oral hygiene recommendations.
If you have excess gum tissue that is affecting the quality of your smile, you may be a good candidate for a crown lengthening procedure. We perform periodontal plastic surgery and periodontal aesthetic treatments at our practice, including gum contouring and reshaping treatments.
