Hes had a lot of dental work, too.Like many people, Dr. Nelson has a lot of unpleasant memories of dental work as a child. From the age of 4 to 18, he had just about every dental treatment procedure from fillings to crowns to extractions.
Because of his personal experiences, hes committed to prioritizing patient comfort.Dr. Nelson is extremely motivated to provide dental care with a high-level of compassion to patients with dental anxiety like himself. Dr. Nelson loves promoting oral health, relieving patients' dental pain, and restoring healthy, beautiful smiles.
One of the few to offer sedation dentistry.As one of the only general dentists in the Winston-Salem and Piedmont Triad area with a moderate sedation license, Dr. Nelson is able to guarantee stress-free care to even the most nervous patients.
Dr. Nelson graduated with Honors from Virginia Commonwealth University, where he studied Biomedical Engineering. He went on to attain his dental degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry.
During his time at The University of North Carolina, Dr. Nelson received multiple awards and was honored to graduate in the top 10% of his class with distinction and was inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the national dental honors society for outstanding graduating dentists. Dr. Nelson also received the Dental Implant Award upon graduation for his extensive interest and knowledge of dental implants.
Following dental school, Dr. Nelson completed an Advanced General Dentistry residency in San Antonio, Texas. During his year of residency, he completed extensive additional training to become certified to administer sedation dentistry.
Dr. Nelson is one of the only general dentists in the Winston-Salem and Piedmont Triad area who can administer sedation dentistry. Dr. Nelson also received additional training on dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, crowns, bridges, dentures, and temporomandibular joint disorder or TMJ pain through his residency program and continuing education programs:
Dr. Nelson was born and raised in Hickory, NC. He graduated second in his class from Hickory High School where he enjoyed playing soccer and basketball. As an Eagle Scout, he spent many memorable weekends hiking and camping in the beautiful western North Carolina mountains.
Dr. Nelson and his wife, Dr. Kelly Lipp, who is a pediatric dentist in Winston-Salem, are thrilled to be members of the Piedmont Triad community. They live in Winston-Salem in Sherwood Forest with their spoiled dog, a Goldendoodle named Teddy. He and his wife were thrilled to welcome their baby girl home on March 22, 2021.
Dr. Nelson is passionate about serving others and has gone on many mission trips to provide dentistry to underserved communities in countries such as Nicaragua, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic. Dr. Nelson also volunteers in the Winston-Salem and Piedmont Triad communities at the Mission of Mercy Clinics and at Veterans Health Clinics.
Dr. Benton started our practice over 40 years ago. He has a passion for cosmetic and general dentistry, and he has been proudly serving the Winston-Salem and Piedmont Triad community since he graduated from dental school.
Hes focused on patient comfort. Dr. Benton has a calm and gentle demeanor, which is also reflected in his dental work. Many of his patients remark that he has the gentlest touch of any dentist they've ever been to!
Dr. Benton was born and raised in Winston-Salem. Dr. Benton graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School in 1969. Following high school, he attended college at UNC Chapel Hill. He fell in love with Chapel Hill during his 4 years as an undergraduate, so he stayed 4 more years for dental school. Upon graduation, Dr. Benton returned to his hometown and established a private practice where he would go on to serve patients for 43 years and counting.
In his spare time, Dr. Benton enjoys golfing and is a member of the Forsyth Country Club. He also enjoys renovation projects at his Buena Vista home and collecting artwork. Dr. Benton is the proud father of two and is thrilled to be a grandfather.

I had a very bad experience with a different dentist many years ago. Benton and Nelson is first dentist I've ever been to that I don't absolutely dread my appointment. I used to sit in the dentist chair sweating, very tense, my stomach in knots with my toes curled tightly but I'm finally able to relax in the dentist chair and not walk out with my legs feeling like jello afterward. I recommend Benton and Nelson with my highest regards, and that's a level not easily achieved with me.

This was the best experience I have ever had at a dentist office. The front office staff was extremely helpful and friendly. The dental technician was so sweet and very knowledgeable. After some bad experiences with a couple dentists in my youth I stopped going to the dentist. My teeth were getting bad and I was scared to go back. My best friend gave me Dr Benton's name and I've been here ever since! I see Dr Nelson now and I would never go to anyone else!! Wonderful people, caring, kind, gentle! I can't say enough wonderful things about them! They're awesome!

Dr. Nelson went to great lengths to make me feel comfortable about my dental issues. He was caring and showed great concern to my needs. He explained things on a personal yet professional level helping me understand my diagnosis. Dr.Nelson advised that he will be getting together with my periodontist to compose the best treatment plan for me. I was visiting family & broke a tooth. This is my son's dentist & he had me give them a call. The after-hours dentist took my call & assured me someone could see me in the morning. (I had no pain or discomfort) The next morning I was seen, had an xray & was examined. They assured me I should be good until I saw my dentist, back home, in 5 days. And they emailed the doctor notes, xray and pictures to my dentist, so an appointment could be set on my return. The entire staff was so helpful and reassuring. I highly recommend this dental practice.
