Until recently, my children had only ever gone to this office. I have to say at the outset that I really like Dr. Downey. I found him more than capable, honest, and kind. However, throughout the years I've gotten the feeling from other providers and from the admin that we were less important than the money they made from us and in general. That's a really crummy feeling. The last experience was the last straw, I'm saddened to say, and it was with the office manager. I brought both my kids for a checkup. It had been a while due to Covid. We had new insurance. She was having trouble connecting with my insurance over the phone. I asked that we wait for my son to go back. I stated that I did not want to proceed if the visit wasn't covered. She, ultimately, told me I was good-to-go. The appointment was already held up so much that they weren't going to be able to get to the cleaning. I was hurried. I felt badly for holding things up. I quickly signed the paper I was given. It is absolutely on me for taking her at her word and not looking more closely at what I signed. Again, I did so because I had already made it clear that I didn't want him to receive services if they were out-of-network, and I had held up the appointment. I should have taken the time to read it thoroughly, anyway. I didn't. Ultimately, they were out-of-network with my new insurance. I have no idea why she told me I was good-to-go after I had made my wishes clear. When she called and emailed numerous times for us to pay the hundreds of dollars we owed for the checkup, I expressed to her multiple times that I felt manipulated and deceived--whether purposeful or not--and she made no adjustment. Not only did she make no adjustment to the out-of-network charges, but she was pretty cold about the whole ordeal and kept referring to my having signed the paper. She's right; I did. I'm still bummed about it. I wish I could feel more comfortable taking my kids back, but I don't trust her, and she runs the show. Just beware. Don't rush when you sign, and don't take them at their word. Read every word of what you're signing. They're in it for the money. No compassion to be found.

My boys were so excited to get their clean cleaned today, it wasn't even a challenge to get them out the door to the office. It helps they get a little toy once complete.

My daughter had a late night accident at home. And I was frantically calling around after most places were closed. Even though Behind the Smile was closed and we were a new possible patient. They took the time to return my call, send my pictures off to a dentist and made us a priority. Then when we came in for our appointment the next day, they were warm and welcoming and explained every single step and option. I cannot remember when I have had such good customer service and experience. Thank you all!

Doctor Downey has cared for all of my children for the last 17 years. He and his team take excellent care of them and their teeth and work well even with my youngest, who is very apprehensive at even the thought of dental care. They are clear communicators, always timely and we appreciate them!

Staff was quick to return my calls, knowledgeable when answering questions, very friendly and made my child feel comfortable. The check-in process was seamless and the office was very clean. 10/10 would recommend!

We love Behind the Smile! Our two girls have been going here for a couple of years and they're always asking when they get to go back. The whole staff is truly fantastic with kids, they make it easy to schedule, and the office is totally digital - e-mailed reminders, sign in on tablet, etc - to make life easier for busy families. Even though they're not a preferred provider with our insurance, it's well worth the difference in cost.

Linzi, the hygienist, worked really well with my 11 year old. She is anxious to go to the dentist, but Linzi did a fantastic job of keeping my daughter calm.

From the moment we stepped into behind the smile dentistry, they were extremely helpful and thoughtful. They took enough time with my daughter as well as myself to reassure us we were being considered with each process. Prior to us going my daughter would barely let me brush her teeth or help her floss. She definitely didn't even like the idea of going to a dentist appointment. Now she looks forward to it and is always telling me how important it is to take care of her teeth. She's even brushing her teeth at school now. I am so excited to have them on our team! By the way all of the staff are so super friendly, you feel like you known them all.

Dr. Downey and his staff are just the best. My daughter adores Angie and she is so patient with my feisty 4 year old. There have been a couple times where we've gone to a different dentist just because of our location or our dental insurance and it just doesn't work. Dr. Downey is the only dentist my kids want to see. He is extremely knowledgeable and non judgmental and he will take as long as necessary to explain treatment options to you. He really cares about what is best for his patients and you can tell that he loves kids. The office setting is bright and inviting. We are so happy we have such a great dental team for our kids!
