Periodontal disease is the LEADING CAUSE OF TOOTH LOSS in the world (more than dental decay), with an estimated 60% of the world population suffering from some form of gum disease. Gum disease has two primary stages. If diagnosed and treated in the first stage, the condition can be reversed and tooth loss can usually be prevented. In order to prevent gum disease,practice good oral hygiene and visit your dentist for cleanings and check-ups regularly.
In your examination visit, a periodontal probe (small dental instrument) is gently used to measure the sulcus (pocket) between the tooth and the gums (figure 1). The depth of a healthy sulcus measures 3 millimeters or less and does not bleed.
If gum disease is detected during your visit (diagnosis made with pocket depth measurements + xrays/radiographs), we will instruct you on steps regarding improved home care and recommend specialized treatment options in our officeto eliminate the disease.
This stage only affects the soft tissue of the gums, and the patient may not experience any discomfort. Although the symptoms may be very mild, it is important to diagnose gum disease in this early stage before it progresses to periodontitis.
Periodontitis is the name for more advanced periodontal disease and if permitted to progress to this point, not only the gums are affected but the bone structures supporting the teeth will be compromised. In addition to symptoms of gingivitis, signs that you have periodontitis may include:
A build-up of bacteria causes Gingivitis. In its early stages, inflammation around the gums is observable, with gum tissues appearing red and swollen. Gums that are easily irritated or that bleed during tooth brushing or flossing indicate the presence of Gingivitis. Removal of the plaque buildup is necessary to prevent the development/progression of gum disease.
As the gums become more inflamed, they start to pull away from the teeth, forming spaces known as periodontal pockets. Food, bacteria, and plaque begin to collect in the pockets, leading to infection. The surrounding bone becomes damaged both by bacterial toxins and by the immune systemsresponse to infection.

I was referred to Dr. Yoo by my family dentist and it was an excellent recommendation. I was able to get an appointment easily and when I went for the consultation I was taken care of promptly. The doctor clearly explained what 'options' I had and I listened to his advice. I had an implant procedure that was handled very well and the expected pain was minimal. I received excellent post-op care with the doctor personally calling me to see how I was feeling. If you ever need periodontal care, you can't go to a better place. I have done two implants with Bayside Periodontics and they have been successful and relatively pain-free. They use the latest equipment and Dr. Yoo is very skilled and explains what is being done every step of the way. He follows up and checks to see how I am doing and feeling. The office is spotless and clean as well as accessible by car or public transportation. If you need periodontal care or implants, you can't go wrong here.

I had to pay the cost of the whole first treatment in full before they went through my insurance company. When I went back for the second treatment they tried to Bill me the cost of the whole second treatment when my insurance company had already paid for half of the first treatment. If I had not bought this to their attention would they have brought it to mine. I don't like that practice usually they charge the total amount to the insurance company and what the insurance company does not pay you are responsible for. If you go here watch there billing practices carefully. The ladies at the front desk are nice enough maybe they're just being told what to do That being said the hygienist Regina was very competent pleasant and respectful.
