Dr. Bates is an active member of the Twin Cities dental community and was named the 2017 recipient of the Minnesota Dental Associations New Dentist Leadership Award, which recognized, his willingness to go above and beyond the call of duty in ensuring the success of organized dentistry and never hesitating to serve when needed. Dr. Bates is a member of the Minnesota Dental Association and the Saint Paul District Dental Society. He is also a past president of the Saint Paul District Dental Society Speakers Bureau, which he has been a member of since 2009. In addition, he is a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society, has served on the 2013-2014 Minnesota Dental Association Constitution, Ethics and Bylaws Committee, and has been a delegate to the Minnesota Dental Association House of Delegates since 2013. He is also currently a member of the Minnesota Dental Association Resolution Review Committee. Dr. Bates was a member of the first graduating class of the Great Lakes Implant Institute and believes in staying ahead of the curve on the latest dental techniques and technology.
When away from the office, Dr. Bates enjoys spending time with his wife, their two boys and their two dogs. He is an avid traveler, skier, runner, and swimmer. He loves living in Minnesota, and he especially looks forward to the warm summer months.
Saliva is one of your bodys natural defenses against plaque because it acts to rinse your mouth of cavity-causing bacteria and other harmful materials. Dry mouth (also called Xerostomia) is a fairly common condition that is caused by diminished saliva production. People with medical conditions, such as an eating disorder or diabetes, are often plagued by dry mouth. Eating foods such as garlic, tobacco use, and some kinds of medications, including treatments such as cancer therapy can diminish the bodys production of saliva, leading to dry mouth. Other causes are related to aging (including rheumatoid arthritis), and compromised immune systems.
Some of the less alarming results of dry mouth include bad breath. But dry mouth can lead to more serious problems, including burning tongue syndrome, a painful condition caused by lack of moisture on the tongue.
If you dont have a medical condition that causes it, dry mouth can be minimized by sipping water regularly, chewing sugarless gum and avoiding smoking. Of course, there is no substitute for regular checkups and good oral hygiene.

This is a multi-generation family dentistry that I highly recommend! I have in trusted them with my dental care before it was even up to me. My mother brought my brothers and I there because a family friend said Dr.Bates SR was great with kids. They were right, we all looked forward to seeing Dr. Bates, and we never feared the dentist. The best part is we all have healthy, strong teeth because of this family dentistry. Flash forward 20 years I have moved around the county and now I am back in MN. I scheduled my first appointment back with them and I am happy I did. It was the first time meeting Dr.Bates JR and I was very impressed. Dr.Bates SR raised a brilliantly talented son that has excelled in filling his very large shoes. My expectations where very high and I could tell immediately the whole staff really cares about their patients and the skill level here is unmatched. I cannot say enough good things about this dentistry but I can say I plan to be their patient forever!

Bates was my first foray back after some serious dental neglect on my part. I was nervous and I honestly could not have asked for a better experience. Dr. Bates gave me the time and attention to detail that I (and my teeth) required. There was no question that he was going to spend whatever time he needed making sure I understood exactly what he was doing and what he recommended I do next. PLUS he told me what work could wait. Seriously. For the first time in my long and storied dental history, I had a dentist tell me I could wait YEARS before I had to get something done. That was almost five years ago and I still feel exactly the same way. I just can't recommend this place highly enough. If you need a dentist, go here.
