A native Oregonian, Dr. Richard Barrett was born and raised in Eugene, Oregon. From birth, Dr. Barrett was surrounded by dentistry. Both of his parents are dental hygienists; his mother still in practice in a career that has spanned nearly five decades. Two of his uncles have worked in dentistry as well, one as a dental specialist and the other as a dental laboratory technician. The oldest of four siblings, Dr. Barrett was followed into dentistry by his sister Georgie, a hygienist, and his brother Stephen, a dentist. It could be said that dentistry is in his genes.

Dr. Barrett completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Oregon earning a Bachelors of Science Degree in 2007. While there, he also discovered his love for research and served as a laboratory technical working in the Institute of Molecular Biology. From there, he moved onto the Oregon Health and Science University School of Dentistry where he earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine Degree in 2012. Continuing his research efforts while at OHSU, Dr. Barrett helped develop a new method for classifying lymph nodes of the head and neck and authored a paper on the subject which was published in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

After a year of working corporate dentistry, Dr. Barrett founded Barrett Family Dental in 2013. Having been raised by two hygienists, Dr. Barrett has shaped his dental philosophy around preventative care and whole-body health. He believes that a healthy mouth is a critical component of a healthy body and lifestyle and has tailor his practice to help his patients achieve that goal.

Understanding that health care is an ever-evolving field, Dr. Barrett is committed to lifelong learning and enjoys furthering his education. To that end, he has spent countless hours in continuing education courses to ensure that his patients always receive the best care. As a result of years of additional education, in 2021 Dr. Barrett was one of only five dentists in the State of Oregon to earn the distinction Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry. This honor requires 500 hours of continuing education and the passing of a comprehensive exam. Approximately only 6% of dentists nationwide are Fellows.

When not in the office, Dr. Barrett loves spending time with his wife Rebecca, a local high school teacher, and his two sons Owen and Oliver. You can often find them on weekends exploring the many wonders of the Pacific Northwest.

I could not be more satisfied with my experience with Dr. Barrett and his staff. When I began seeing Dr. Barrett 8 years ago I had not seen a dentist in over 10 years. I was nervous and expecting the worse. Instead, I was greeted without judgment and given friendly supportive service. Since then I have received continuous excellent service. From the front desk to the hygienists to the doctor himself, the staff is friendly and professional. I travel all the way from NE Portland to Beaverton to get my regular dental maintenance just because I have had such a good experience with this office. It's well worth it for my peace of mind knowing I will receive friendly, professional, and honest dental work.

On June 13th 2022, Dr Richard Barrett refused to re-cement my crown which had fallen off multiple times over the years. I had really liked him so I toughed it out the pain and anxiety far too many times and more than anyone should have. I had even written him a good review in the beginning as he needed more clients. He eventually refunded me for it stating he "was not happy with how it turned out." But now it's fallen off once again June 2022. Note: My original crown on this same tooth was done by Dr John Williams "Beaverton Family Dental," he's now retired. That first crown lasted 20 years (on the same molar.) When the receptionist called, I felt gaslighted listening to her state my current X-rays showed it was not the same crown and then later Barrett insisted I had another dentist change it! I can't tell you how absolutely insane, rude, disrespectful it is to be treated so poorly. Barrett wouldn't even see me because if he had, he'd known this was the crown he installed and he would have seen he was dead wrong in insisting otherwise. The difference in my X-rays from 2021 to recently May 2022 show me the crown had come loose so it had shifted and slipped down on the tooth, so instead of contemplating that scenario he jumps to the wrong thought train that I had gone to someone else to have it done again and he wasn't going to re cement it or help me. Basically, insulting me and calling me a liar and not taking care of me! Instead, his receptionist and then he proceeds to gaslight, betray and did the worst kind of injustice to an innocent senior who had been his patient through his growth period from the beginning! Richard Barrett has shown to be unethical and worse showing ignorance not seeing my crown had indeed shifted, clearly it had come loose again and was coming off since my last cleaning in May 2022. If he had been a decent human and being a doctor, whose oath is: 'Do No Harm,' he should've said come on in and I will take care of you!

Not the same dentist I began going to in 2019. I don't know if it's the pandemic or what but I was in for a routine cleaning on Monday and he basically fired me as a patient. He came in and handed the hygienist a referral slip to give me, spoke to the back of my head for a minute about periodontal disease then walked back out.

I'm super anxious about going to the dentist, but Dr. Barrett and his team exude so much kindness and confidence, that I actually look forward to my appointments and feel positive about my treatment plan. I also really appreciate the front office staff being quick to return calls, the reminder texts/emails, and that I didn't have to wait two months for my first appointment. A gem of a place!

I'm so thrilled to have Dr. Barrett and his staff for my dental care! Dr. Barrett is SUCH a fabulous dentist! I have total confidence in his care! He proved himself to be honest and take a conservative approach on my first visit. I had a severe tooth pain and was sure I needed a root canal. He took a careful history, x-rays, and exam and said he was quite certain it was just an irritated nerve due to a couple things that could be easily remedied! No root canal! He was right and the pain went away in the time frame he thought it would! He also explains things really well and answers all my questions clearly and in a way that makes so much sense that all my concerns are alleviated. I got the best teeth cleaning I've ever had by his staff as well! I love that Dr. Barrett comes from a family of dentists. I think that just makes his knowledge, common sense, and interest in dentistry far above the norm. His secretary is also super friendly. The office is beautiful and it feels more like a nice hotel lobby in the waiting room! It's just a wonderful experience all around!

I love that he doesn't talk me into expensive dental work that is not necessary to be done... like so many other dentists do.

I'm nearly 70, so I've had a lot of Novocain shots by now. I just had one this morning from Dr. Barrett, and his technique was by far the gentlest I've ever had -- barely hurt at all while being administered. Both my wife and I really like our hygienist. Although forced by the pandemic to revert to manual tools (vs. the more modern power-washing method), her technique is as close to perfect as is humanly possible. Never any bleeding or accidental pokes, which have happened many times with other hygienists. And although today was my first filling from the dentist, it was my 4th or 5th cleaning (we became new patients last year), so that assessment has a solid data base behind it. And my wife has had one of their crowns that they make while-U-wait, right there in the office (total time about 2 hrs) and it actually fit better than either of her other two, both of which required her to return after a few days to have the temporary crown removed, which can be painful. Fantastic! If we could give them 6 or more stars, we would!

Changing dentists because of a change of health insurance made me very nervous. Dr Barrett and his team eased all those fears. They are all knowledgeable, patient, thorough, gentle and kind.

Dr. Barrett, his staff, Ms. Jen, Ms. Anilila are the professionals I've received help from but I'm sure anyone else working with this doctor must be linked in this chain of professionalism and courteousness. Insomuch that without a word being spoken, the environment introduces what you're going to feel like after you've your dental health needs met. Going in sad and leaving as though someone waved a magic wand sending you away in bright sunshine. I'sac

I am so happy with my recent visit to Barrett Family Dental! I had not been to the dentist in nearly 5 years, since my other dentist retired. I was very nervous but Leslie made me feel so at ease while she took my x-rays and Annie is a wonderful hygienist! Jennifer and Abigail made scheduling and working with my insurance so easy. Dr. Barrett is so nice and has a great chairside manner. I am actually looking forward to going back to the dentist again!!!
