I have always enjoyed the health care profession and working with people. I chose to become a dentist because I enjoy not only the science of dentistry, but also the artistic side of this field. I take great joy in creating a beautiful smile for my patients.
I graduated from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 1981 and immediately joined my father in Grand Rapids at our Burton Street office. I was very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with my father for 15 years. His passion for dentistry and for life was infectious.
He taught me so much about dentistry and how to take care of people. I will always treasure the days we worked together. In 2005, I built my new office on East Paris Ave. I have completed thousands of hours of continuing education in general dentistry and in cosmetic and reconstructive dentistry.
I am a graduate of the Kois Center in Seattle, WA and the Misch International Implant Institute in Beverly Hills, MI. These residency programs allow me to pursue my passion of restoring complex dental cases so that even the most devastated conditions can be successfully treated in my office.
The most rewarding part of dentistry is to successfully treat any patient who is embarrassed to smile and pulls back from society. With modern dental techniques, I am able to restore teeth to their natural beauty. It gives me a great deal of joy when a patient sends me a note saying that they can now go out in public and enjoy life again. That is what my job is all about, helping people to feel better!
From a young age, I have always been drawn to dentistry. I loved the idea of working closely with people and being a valuable part of their health care. I also deeply enjoy the artistic side of restorative dentistry, in following natures forms to help restore beauty and function to a smile. It is my belief that great dentistry is both science and art.
I was born in Lansing, and grew up spending time all over Michigan and Wisconsin. I attended St. Olaf College in Minnesota, where I studied both chemistry and history. I went on to obtain my dental degree from the University of Michigan, and afterwards completed a residency in general dentistry with the University of Detroit Mercy.
I believe in developing long term relationships to help create long term solutions, and that your oral health is an integral part of your overall health. I strive to provide the best possible care in a relaxed and comfortable setting.
I also believe in the importance of lifelong learning, and am continually seeking to advance my knowledge and skillset to provide the best possible care for patients. I have studied extensively on restorative dentistry through the Dawson Academy, Spear Education, and the Texas Center for Occlusal Studies/Stewart Center for Minimally Invasive Dental Medicine. I am also a member of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT), focusing on holistic and biologic dental practices including mercury-safe dentistry.
In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my wife, Natalie, my son, Bennett, and my daughter, Hadley. We are active outdoors with our golden retriever, and we enjoy bicycling and being out on Glen Lake.
At a young age, I found myself drawn to activities involving the use of my hands, from sports to wood working to drawing. I loved the idea of being able to create, fix, and build things. I was also passionate about health professions and caring for people. Dentistry is a field which allows me to use my artistic side, create lasting relationships with families, and play an integral role in their healthcare.
I was born and raised in a small town in Michigans Upper Peninsula. I attended Michigan State University where I studied kinesiology. Following my undergraduate studies, I went on to the University of Michigan to obtain my dental degree. Afterwards, I completed a general practice residency at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan.
While in residency, I gained further training in esthetics, prosthodontics, oral surgery, implants and grafting, molar endodontics, management of TMJ disorders, dental trauma care, and management of medically compromised patients.
I have a great passion for cosmetic dentistry and helping patients achieve their best smile possible. I believe that the foundation for truly great dental care is open communication and trust between myself and my patients. I pride myself on being calm, compassionate, and your biggest advocate.
