Over a period of time, the jaw bone associated with missing teeth atrophies and is reabsorbed. This often leaves a condition in which there is poor quality and quantity of bone suitable for the placement of dental implants. In these situations, most patients are not candidates for the placement of dental implants.
With bone grafting we now have the opportunity to not only replace bone where it is missing, but we also have the ability to promote new bone growth in that location. This not only gives us the opportunity to place implants of proper length and width, it also gives us a chance to restore functionality and aesthetic appearance.
Autogenous bone grafts, also known as autografts, are made from your own bone, taken from somewhere else in the body. The bone is typically harvested from the chin, jaw, lower leg bone, hip, or the skull. Autogenous bone grafts are advantageous in that the graft material is your own live bone, meaning it contains living cellular elements that enhances bone growth, also eliminating the risk of your body rejecting the graft material since it comes from you.
Allogenic bone, or allograft, is dead bone harvested from a cadaver, then processed using a freeze-dry method to extract the water via a vacuum. Unlike autogenous bone, allogenic bone cannot produce new bone on its own. Rather, it serves as a framework, or scaffold, over which bone from the surrounding bony walls can grow to fill the defect or void.
Xenogenic bone is derived from non-living bone of another species, usually a cow. The bone is processed at very high temperatures to avoid the potential for immune rejection and contamination. Like allogenic grafts, xenogenic grafts serve as a framework for bone from the surrounding area to grow and fill the void.
Both allogenic and xenogenic bone grafting have an advantage of not requiring a second procedure to harvest your own bone, as with autografts. However, because these options lack autografts bone-forming properties, bone regeneration may take longer than with autografts, and have a less predictable outcome.
This product is processed allograft bone, containing collagen, proteins, and growth factors that are extracted from the allograft bone. It is available in the form of powder, putty, chips, or as a gel that can be injected through a syringe.
Graft composites consist of other bone graft materials and growth factors to achieve the benefits of a variety of substances. Some combinations may include: collagen/ceramic composite, which closely resembles the composition of natural bone, DBM combined with bone marrow cells, which aid in the growth of new bone, or a collagen/ceramic/autograft composite.
Synthetic materials also have the advantage of not requiring a second procedure to harvest bone, reducing risk and pain. Each bone grafting option has its own risks and benefits. Dr. Oppenheimer will determine which type of bone graft material best suited to your particular needs.
Dr. Eli C. Oppenheimer received his Bachelor of Science degree from Yeshiva University, majoring in Chemistry. He then attended dental school at the University of Florida where he earned his DMD degree.
After dental school, Dr. Oppenheimer completed a four year residency at the prestigious Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami Hospital Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Program, under the guidance of the world renown Dr. Robert Marx. Dr. Oppenheimer has extensive training in facial trauma, head and neck pathology, dental implants and dentoalveolar surgery.
In 2019, Dr. Oppenheimer became a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. This is the highest level of certification possible for an Oral Surgeon and represents that Dr. Oppenheimer has demonstrated a high level of dedication and hard work that is above and beyond standard expectations in his field.
Dr. Oppenheimer is certified in General Anesthesia/Deep Sedation, Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS, and Basic Life Support (BLS).
Dr. Oppenheimer is a South Florida native and currently lives in Miami Beach with his wife and family. During his free time he enjoys spending time with family and friends, kite surfing, fishing, and staying fit.

My mother is and elderly patient who recently went to see Doctor Eli Oppenheimer for her tooth extraction. She was extremely happy with the way the doctor professionally handled the issue. Procedure went very well, quickly and pain free. First dental office where my mother called, and the front desk tried to help my mom's concerns without demanding cash up front. This approach should be an example for other greedy dentists around Miami who care more about dollars not people's wellbeing. Thank you doctor! Keep up good work!

I had two wisdom teeth removed and I gotta say Dr. Oppenheimer made the experience a positive one. The team was great at follow-up, was kind, and made me feel like I was taken care of. The procedure itself went without a hitch and I was surprised at how fast it was -- in and out within an hour. My pharmacy was slow with processing my prescriptions after the teeth removal so I called the office back and Dr. Oppenheimer picked up and helped me make sure I got the antibiotics and pain meds I needed by following up with the pharmacy. I loved the responsiveness and overall care! Highly recommended.

Hello All, Let me say , I am very well pleased with Dr. Eli Oppenheimer and team ( Ms.Olga :front Desk, Maria and cool Assistant Michael ( he kept me worry free lol). I have just returned home from a broken infected tooth extraction and I left feeling NO PAIN , SMILING ( maybe a bit to much :) ) , and confident in my healing process. I have GAD (general anxiety disorder) & more such as thin or rolling veins and dark skin which can sometimes make vein finding hard but Dr. Eli found my vein and the spot he used ( wrist vein);even my hematologist oncologist sometimes sting me but NOT DR. Eli, he was gentle, compassionate and so efficient that I really didn't even know he got the IV in :). Now although young lol (35) I've had numerous oral surgeries from NYC to NC and now in FL and again ... I am VERY CONFIDENT You will BE heard and treated like You Matter here. I'd like to address also the front desk lady Ms. Olga ( now at first I was annoyed with her and the office , thinking "hey this process started a few months back , why are you guys ignoring me", well today 6/16/22 I got to see , she is a WONDERFUL front desk lady , that is EXTREMLY swamped with so many demands from us ( I seen it with my own eyes and ears) her trying to answer questions from people calling in, print papers for folks to sign so we can see the Dr. , give email addresses to people switching dentist all in 15 mins of arriving) , she multitasks ALOT. The point is , if you get there and she seems annoyed , tired or seemingly too busy for you, TRUST ME: Dr.Eli Oppenheimer has the right person for the job ; Ms.Olga , so STAY if you can and try to get what YOU NEED done , so it can be done CORRECTLY. Dr. Oppenheimer was truly amazing! I needed all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled the same day and he did it within 1 hour. The recovery process was thoroughly explained & was quite painless. His office staff is caring and professional. I highly recommend this practice!
