We have all heard from a young age that it is important to brush and floss our teeth twice a day. That is only one aspect of caring for the teeth and keeping them healthy. Preventative dental care also includes regular oral exams, professional cleanings, and routine X-rays along with good lifestyle choices such as proper nutrition and hygiene habits.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in four adults suffers from untreated tooth decay. The longer someone waits to visit the dentist, the more likely they are to develop painful and costly dental problems later on. Preventative dental care lowers the risk of developing cavities, gum disease, and other serious dental problems. It can also help reduce dental problems related to some chronic medical conditions such as diabetes.

Oral health is also connected to the health of the entire body. The mouth is a breeding ground for harmful bacteria as well as the entry point to the digestive and respiratory tracts. Without proper oral hygiene, including preventative dentistry, secondary problems can develop such as respiratory and heart disease.

In addition to reducing a familys risk for other health issues, practicing good preventive dental care can save money. While it may not completely eliminate treatments such as fillings, it can go a long way in reducing the need for costly services. In fact, a study by Cigna concluded that, Customers who did not receive preventive care experienced a 43% increase to their annual dental costs over the same period of time. This illustrates that individuals who practice regular preventive oral health care and visit their dentist as recommended achieve higher cost savings each year.

Dental cleanings and exams allow dentists to identify problems and take care of them immediately. Typically, dental visits are recommended twice a year. However, the American Dental Association recommends that the dentist determine just how often someone needs to be seen based on the patients current oral health status, and medical and history.

A basic dental cleaning includes a physical exam of the entire mouth, which involves using a small mirror to check around the teeth and gums for any signs of inflammation or other concerns. Our staff will then use small scraping tools to remove plaque and tartar from around the gum line and between the teeth. This is followed by a thorough tooth cleaning using a high-powered electric brush and dental flossing. Patients will have their mouth flushed with water as needed throughout the cleaning process.

Deep cleanings use special techniques to get rid of plaque, tartar and bacteria below the gum line and down to the roots of the teeth. This type of cleaning helps prevent gum disease from advancing and causing tooth loss. Antibiotics, either in an oral form or as a gel or rinse, may be prescribed to help fight bacteria. As this type of cleaning goes below the gum line, a local anesthetic is used to numb the gums.

Lifestyle choices can have a direct effect on a familys dental health. From poor sleep to smoking and piercings, many personal decisions can harm oral health. Using tobacco inhibits your mouth's natural healing properties and makes you more likely to experience dental disease, while the hardware used in piercings in the lips, cheeks or tongue can cause gum recession and chipped teeth.

A healthy diet can also prevent dental issues down the road. A diet lacking in certain nutrients may make it more difficult for tissues in the mouth to resist infection, which can contribute to gum disease. This is a major contributor to tooth loss in adults.

It is best to limit the intake of excess sugar. Sugar is the bacterias food of choice and can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Many foods and drinks packed with sugar are also acidic, which can break down a tooths protective enamel. Drink plenty of water and eat a variety of foods from the five major food groups. The vitamins and minerals provided in such foods assist with oral health.

In addition to regular checkups and cleanings, a dentist may suggest other services to assist with a familys preventative dental care. These may include fluoride or dental sealants. These services and treatments provide another protective layer to help combat tooth decay.

Topical fluorides strengthen existing teeth, making them more decay-resistant. Many dentists provide these treatments to children under 18. For people who are predisposed to cavities or decay, a special gel for daily home use may be recommended.

Dental sealants are thin, plastic coatings painting on the chewing surface of teeth. They shield the teeth from food debris and bacteria responsible for cavities. The teeth are thoroughly cleaned and then the sealant is applied. It is hardened using a laser or ultraviolet light to fuse it to the teeth. The entire process takes less than an hour.

A. Preventative dentistry is specific care designed to keep your teeth and gums healthy. It involves regular dental visits along with good lifestyle habits like brushing and flossing. Taking care of your teeth and gums can help prevent the need for high-cost treatments in the future.

A. For most people, two visits to the dentist a year are recommended. However, our dentist may suggest additional visits if problems are detected, or if the patient is at high risk for oral health issues. During these visits, patients receive a professional cleaning, any necessary X-rays, and an overall examination of the mouth.

A. Dental cleanings and exams involve the removal of plaque and tartar from the teeth, a professional cleaning, any necessary X-rays and a thorough exam by our dentist to look for any oral health issues. Regular checkups can help catch potential problems before they get worse.

A. X-rays are an important diagnostic tool to help identify problems inside your teeth or beneath the gum line before they become a more serious problem. This can potentially save you money and unnecessary pain.

A. Regular care and professional cleanings from a dentist are a major component of preventative dental care. Brushing alone does not get all of the plaque and tartar that can become trapped in the ridges of your teeth. Once tartar has developed, you are more susceptible to cavities, gum disease and other problems.

By visiting us as soon as possible, our team can help get you the professional treatment you need. Instead of waiting around and allowing the symptoms to get worse, we can provide you with treatment options.

Despite what many people think, a general dentist wants to see strong, healthy teeth when patients come into the office. Dentists are, in fact, the most prominent champions of clean and cavity-free teeth; they work to educate patients and community members about proper oral care techniques and cleaning practices. With the right level of care,

Among the most common dental problems that a general dentist treats are cavities. Most people will experience this form of tooth decay at some point due to:Dry mouthSugary foods and drinksPoor oral hygieneGeneticsThere are several types of cavities, and each can lead to complications without prompt treatment.A general dentist first considers a cavity's location when

If a general dentist recommends a dental crown, there are a variety of reasons why. Crowns can be used for cosmetic corrections as well as for protection and support. These dental restorations may seem intimidating to those who have never had one, but they do not have to be. Here are some questions to ask

Clear orthodontic aligners have been growing in popularity for many years. One of the most recognizable brands is Invisalign. Invisalign is a form of orthodontics that uses clear tray aligners to straighten the teeth instead of the traditional mouthful of metal wires and brackets.

Invisalign uses clear tray aligners instead of metal wires and brackets to straighten teeth. The aligners are constructed of a solid piece of plastic strong enough to shift the teeth and move them into the correct position. Every one or two weeks, the patient receives a new tray with an updated aligner. Each tray will feel slightly different as it shifts and moves the teeth.

The idea of using removable aligners to adjust the teeth is not a new concept. The idea was first introduced in the 1940s. Additional improvements were made through the decades, though the technology did not improve until the 1990s. The creators of Invisalign developed their mass-market system in 1999.

Once the aligners have been made, our staff will make sure they fit well, answer any questions, and go over the treatment plan. Patients will be expected to wear the aligners for 20 to 22 hours a day to get results. Regular checkups with Auburn Oaks Family Dentistry will make sure treatment stays on track. Our staff will determine how often new aligners are needed.

After the desired results have been achieved, the patient may be expected to wear a retainer to maintain those results. This will prevent teeth from gradually shifting back to their initial position. Our doctor will provide specific instructions on how often a retainer will need to be worn.

Invisalign is not without its pros and cons. Thanks to the fact that they are next-to-invisible, both teens and adults can avoid the discomfort and self-consciousness of traditional metal braces. Many patients also appreciate that they can take Invisalign aligners out to eat, brush and floss, or for social situations.

However, since they are removable, they are more likely to be lost or broken. Patients also need to be careful about what they drink when their aligners are in. Anything but water should be avoided. Liquids can seep into the plastic and stay there until the aligner is removed. This can lead to staining of the aligner and even tooth decay.

It is essential to use and care for Invisalign aligners appropriately to have a good orthodontic outcome. For Invisalign to work, the aligners have to be worn for the recommended number of hours a day. Patients should try to limit the number of times they remove the aligners since it will not take long to exceed the time they can be left off.

Patients should always rinse the aligners when they are removed. Bacteria and plaque can easily attach to them, which can cause an unpleasant odor and sticky feeling on the teeth. Aligners should be cleaned with a clear and unscented antibacterial soap. If patients use toothpaste to clean the aligners, they should make sure that it is not a brand with whitening agents, as these can wear away the plastic.

Proper oral hygiene is essential at any time, but it is a bit easier when using Invisalign versus traditional braces. Food and plaque can get trapped in conventional braces' metal brackets and can be tough to brush. Since Invisalign aligners can be removed, it is simple to brush and floss and replace the aligners when finished.

Only a dentist can reasonably predict the length of the Invisalign treatment time. The severity of the condition, how well the patient adheres to the treatment plan, and age are all factors. On average, it takes less than two years to see results. The treatment time for teens is typically a little shorter than adults.

Following all the recommended guidelines will ensure patients do not extend the treatment time. Patients need to switch trays on schedule and talk to our staff if there are any concerns. If the aligners are not worn for the recommended time, the teeth may start to shift back to their original positions.

A. Invisalign is an orthodontic technique that uses clear, plastic aligners to straighten the teeth. The aligners are created from a custom mold of the patients mouth, and new aligner trays are provided at specific intervals as part of the treatment process. Auburn Oaks Family Dentistry will develop the treatment plan and monitor the process.

A. Since Invisalign aligners are clear, patients can avoid the unsightly look of a mouth filled with metal brackets and wires. They are also more comfortable to wear and allow the patient fewer restrictions on foods they can eat. Since they are removable, it is easier to brush and floss your teeth.

A. Treatment, on average, takes less than two years but can vary depending on the patients specific concerns. Aligners must be worn for 20-22 hours a day to see results. If a patient does not wear the aligners for the recommended amount of time, treatment results will take longer.

A. Unlike traditional metal braces, Invisaligns clear aligners do not rub and poke at the soft tissues of the mouth. Patients can expect to feel some sensitivity for a day or two when a new set of aligners are put in. This means the teeth are shifting and the aligners are working. Any discomfort should go away quickly.

A. Aligners should be cleaned with a clear and unscented antibacterial soap or toothpaste. If using toothpaste, make sure it is not a brand with whitening agents, which can wear away the plastic. Always brush and floss after meals before putting the aligners back in the mouth. This helps keep food particles from getting stuck, which can lead to bacteria growth and bad breath.

A. If you eat with the aligners in place, make sure to avoid hard foods like raw carrots and sticky foods like gum. Hard and sticky candies should also be avoided. You will also want to avoid drinking anything other than water when the aligners are in place. Coffee and tea can stain the aligners, while soda has acidic properties that can break down the plastic.

I'm finally impressed with a dentist. All my life I've had a distrust of dentists, they always hurt me. Not anymore here at Auburn Oaks they have worked with me so I can be sedated before my procedures. For the first t ime in my life I don't wait forever before going to the dentist. My smile has been saved. The staff here is amazing. I would recommend Auburn Oaks to everyone. If my insurance changed I would still come here that's the highest recommendation I can give

Came to pay my bill three times during weekday and they were closed even if online it said they were open. They rescheduled my appointment twice and each time had to wait an extra month. Then on the day of my appointment I show up at the scheduled time and they're closed. The day before they even sent me text measage to confirm my appointment. Don't waste your time on them. Absolutely unprofessional.

The people who work at Auburn Oaks Family Dentistry are wonderful. I had to have a deep cleaning recently and I was truly impressed with the hygienist and the dental technician. They both explained what they were doing, answered my questions and were genuinely interested in helping me. The couple of receptionists I have met were both kind and helpful as well. I am so grateful to have found such a wonderful dentist office. They took care of all the insurance issues despite my insurance company being less than helpful. Wonderful people and a simple yet comfortable atmosphere. I wish I had found them sooner.

The staff alone would rate this a 5-star experience, but when they told me my bill was literally HALF the local competitors, I was shocked. I have a anxiety problem when it comes to being in enclosed places as weird as that sounds, and the Dentist Office is no exception...EVERYONE at this office made me feel not only as a valued customer but as a valued person in genral. I HIGHLY recommend giving this practice your business not just for results but for the CARE they show people.

I've been a patient at Auburn Oaks Family Dentistry for close to 3 years. I highly recommend this dental practice. Not only professional and efficient but so very friendly also. From the dentists, technicians and front office they rate a 10. The dentists realize that sometimes a patient can be nervous. They know how to take away that nervousness thru conversations before the procedure and before you know it, the procedure is done.I highly recommend Auburn Oaks Dentristry.

The office was extremely clean and efficient. The office personal were friendly, cheerful, helpful, and knowledge in their own fields. I left this appointment knowing exactly what I needed to move forward with my dental health. And how much my Insurance is willing to pay and for the amount for each item. I can be completely prepared. My friend was so impressed that before we left the office he made an appointment for himself. He has put this off for years!!.

Smiles are a big part of everyone there, from the dentist to the staff. I highly recommend this dental practice and give it five stars!!
