Dr. Kathryn Duncan Friedman started her own practice over 25 years ago, and now she is happily joined by her daughter, Dr. Mara Mangini, and her son-in-law, Dr Nicholas Mangini. Together they are the doctors of our Atlas Dental team. Our family practice provides a warm, friendly environment and a wide range of experience and expertise. Dr. Kathryn Duncan Friedman is a seasoned general dentist with hours of continuing education and years of practice, while Drs. Nicholas and Mara Mangini bring their advanced training as Prosthodontists to our team, and offer a new array of services and treatments.
Dr. Mara Mangini grew up in Pittsburgh, and is happy to still call it her home. After receiving her BA from Washington University in St. Louis in 2004 where she focused on Architecture and Environmental Studies, she returned to Pittsburgh to pursue additional courses in the sciences. She excelled in these courses, and was accepted into the honors society at the University of Pittsburgh where she completed her studies. Inspired by her mother, Dr. Kathryn Duncan Friedman, she attended The University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, where she met her husband, Dr. Nicholas Mangini, and received her DMD in 2011.
Dr. Mangini is committed to continue her education throughout her career and is an Invisalign Preferred Provider. She is also a member of the American Dental Association, the Academy of Osseointegration, the American College of Prosthdontics, the Pennsylvania Prosthodontics Association, the Pennsylvania Dental Assocation, the Discovery Study Club, and she is an active member of the Pitt Dental Alumni Board, serving as a mentor to dental students.
Dr. Mangini enjoys rowing, hiking, and biking, and has never forgotten her architectural training, constantly remodeling and redesigning the home she shares with her husband, Nick. Together, Mara and Nick live in Sq. Hill with their two children Max and Maya.
Born and raised in Western Pennsylvania, Dr. Mangini graduated from Allegheny College in Meadville, PA with the distinction of Magna Cum Laude. He later attended The University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine where he received his DMD in 2010. Dr. Mangini then finalized his specialty training in prosthodontics in 2013, serving in the role of Chief Resident at The University of Pittsburgh SDM Graduate Prosthodontics Program. During his time in the Graduate Prosthodontic Program, he received specialized training in surgical and restorative dental implant therapy, full mouth rehabilitation, crown and bridge, and complete denture therapy.
A member of national organizations including the American Dental Association, Academy of Osseointegration, American College of Prosthdontics and local groups including the Pennsylvania Dental Association. Dr. Mangini is an active member in the dental community, always continuing his education to stay current with the latest developments in his field. His advanced training has allowed him to lecture to colleagues on topics including dental implants and fixed prosthodontics. Prior to taking on a lead rold at Atlas Dental Specialists, Dr. Mangini also served as Clinical Associate Professor in the Prosthodontics Department at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. Additionally, he is a certified provider of the Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation.
Dr. Mangini resides with his wife, Mara, and their two children, Max and Maya, in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Squirrel Hill. In his spare time he enjoys the outdoors, running and biking in the citys parks and camping and hiking in the areas state parks.
Dr. Alexandra Masek was born and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania. Dr. Masek earned a bachelors of Science degree in Life Science, with a minor in Business Administration from Penn State University. She earned her doctorate of Dental Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. She then went on to complete a one year General Practice Residency at the Veterans Affairs Hospital of Milwaukee. After completion of her post-graduate residency, she lived and practiced in Milwaukee for a few years before returning to Pittsburgh in 2018. She is delighted to be back in Pittsburgh and serving the community she loves so much.
Dr. Masek is a member of the American Dental Association, Pennsylvania Dental Association, Western Pennsylvania Association, and the American Academy of Facial Esthetics. Dr. Masek is passionate about life long learning and is committed to continued education. She is actively involved in the ADA and local dental societies, while also regularly attending dental continuing education courses.
Dr. Alexandra Masek is passionate about providing quality, ethical dental care for her community. She enjoys providing comprehensive treatment for patients of all ages, utilizing all facets of dentistry. The aspects of dentistry that Dr. Masek loves the most are the opportunities to cultivate long term relationships with patients and to leave them a bit better than they were before.
Outside of dentistry, Dr. Masek enjoys staying active and exploring the city of Pittsburgh. She is an avid sports enthusiast, and her favorite activities include swimming, golfing, running, skiing, reading and traveling. Dr. Masek loves to participate in local Pittsburgh events. She believes in the importance of volunteering, giving back and being involved in her community.
