John O. Ashby, DDS, MS was born and raised in Oklahoma. While studying at theUniversity of Oklahoma,he found two great passions:his wifeRachel, a psychology graduate student from Iowa, and dentistry. He lucked into both, and they continue to bless his life.
From Oklahoma, Dr. Ashby and Rachel moved to St. Louis so he could study orthodontics. In St. Louis, three wonderful things happened to their family: Dr. Ashby discovered his love for orthodontics and the challenges it presented, and he and Rachelwere blessed with two children:a boy, J.T., and a girl, Elise.
After working for a few years in St. Louis following residency, the Ashby family ventured east. They were drawn to the Tidewater area for a number of reasons: Rachels sister and best friend lives nearby, the weather is fantastic, and Dr. Owensshonesty, kindness, and practice philosophy were a great fit for Dr. Ashby.
Tidewater has been great for the Ashbys. They love the beach and enjoy the great weather. Dr. Ashby stays busy with work, family, and church. He maintains active membership in theAmerican Dental AssociationandAmerican Association of Orthodontistsas well as serving on the craniofacial anomalies team atChildrens Hospital of the Kings Daughters. Going to Ashby was a ok experience in the beginning. When Covid came, the office shut down then when they reopened it would be about 3-4 months before you could get a appointment. I had to wear these braces 4 1/2 years and it caused more damage to my teeth. I literally set in the chair and cried but they still made me sign a paper saying you're "satisfied" before they removed my braces. Now I have gap in my mouth; in which, is so hard to look at because I've worked so hard to pay off these braces alone.

I'm an orthodontist in Minneapolis, MN. I reached out to Dr Ashby's practice to see if they could help out my brother-in-law who lived near the Virginia Beach office. He is being deployed this weekend and needed an Invisalign scan before he left. Sometimes in our industry when you ask for favors you're met with either no response, or annoyed staff. The opposite was the case with Dr Ashby's office! His front desk staff was very nice and hugely helpful. There was some coordination involved and they got back to me exactly when they said they would. My brother-in-law said the experience was far easier than he thought it would be and that he was in and out in a few minutes. Based on my experience with Dr Ashby's office, I'd highly recommend anyone who lives in the area see Dr Ashby for you or your children's orthodontic care! Thanks again for your help guys!

Dont go here! My daughter had to wear braces for 5 years because this doctor didnt know what he was doing! Now my daughter went to an oral surgeon and he spoke badly about Ashby's work so now my daughter has to go to several ortho doctors and see if they can repair her teeth plus she might have to wear braces again! She is in her early 20's and to wear braces again is not good! Please go somewhere else, there are plenty of good doctors! He has like 5-6 patients in one room and he jus walks by, takes a quick look and continues around the room, this went on for 5 long years! Ridiculous! My daughter is devastated!

I love love loved the fact that Dr.Ashby came into my consultation and actually had a conversation with me for longer than 2 mins. Him taking the time to sit down and chat about my teeth as well as him trying to get to know me as a person and not just another client. The office staff is great too!!

I would not go anywhere else for orthodontics in Hampton roads. Entire staff is professional, office is clean and Dr.Ashby is truly one of the nicest people I have ever met! We are lucky to have him here

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! They are the reason I developed a new hatred for going to the dentist! I have been traumatized. I went here when I was younger (5 years ago) when I was in middle school. This dentist and the surgeon in another area work together to bring in more money. They advised my mom to get surgery on my tooth in my gums and to put a chain on the one coming in telling me that there is a high chance that it will come down... IT NEVER CAME DOWN. So now here I am 5 years later with no tooth on one side because of them! They also had my braces on for the entire period and still my teeth have spaces. They refused to put my bottom braces on. Please I advise you do not go to this dentist. They only care about your money.

I came in recently for consultation with Dr.Ashby. First I sat down with Penny to go over my information and discuss what I was looking to accomplish then we met with Dr.Ashby for him to have a look at my teeth. Both Penny and Dr. Ashby took the time to listen to me and Dr.Ashby gave his honest and professional opinions regarding my situation. He suggested simple options for me that my dentist could take care of instead of me having to go through the braces process. He even took the time to explain the process that the dentist would be doing on my teeth. His kindness, experience, and knowledge is not common these days. I feel like majority of people would give you a "sorry can't help peace out". Thank you both to Dr. Ashby and Penny you guys are awesome! I was also impressed with how easy and fast it was to make an appointment. I filled out a request online Sunday and the next day I received a call from Donna to schedule my appointment. Donna was the absolute sweetest person I've ever spoken with. I also like to mention Nicolette at the front desk. As soon as I walked up to the counter she was friendly and helpful with filling out my paperwork. She made me feel very welcomed in the office. Everyone that I spoke with was amazing! Sorry for the long post but I wanted to give them a little shout out for it! Thanks again everyone. :)
