In a few circumstances, Dr. Patel may prescribe antibiotics prior to tooth extraction. A person may need antibiotics if they have a high risk of infective endocarditis, an infection of the heart valves or the interior lining of the heart chambers

The process of extraction will begin with a review of medical history to ensure the safety and efficiency of tooth extraction. The following steps outline the general steps of the tooth extraction procedure:

After your tooth extraction, it is important to care for the site of extraction. Ascent Dental will pack an aftercare kit for you consisting of sterilized gauze that should be switched out every 20 minutes until bleeding stops.

  • Bleeding:Slight oozing of blood and saliva is normal following oral surgery. Gauze packs were most likely placed over the surgical site before you left our office. These can be removed after approximately 30 minutes. Replacing the gauze is not necessary unless the bleeding is significant. To slow bleeding, fold a gauze square into a tight knot, and gently bite down on it with the firm, steady pressure. If this does not slow the bleeding, you can moisten a caffeinated tea bag and bite down on it for 15 minutes. The tannic acid in the tea will help to shrink blood vessels and slow bleeding. If you still have severe bleeding after using a teabag, contact our office for further instructions.
  • Swelling:While swelling is a normal part of the healing process, it can be reduced with the use of a cold compress. Gently apply an ice pack to the external surface of the area in continuous, 20-minute increments. This is extremely beneficial when done over the course of the first day. Typically, ice packs will not be helpful after 24 hours.
  • Hygiene:Do not brush the surgical site. Use an antibacterial mouth rinse to aid in healing and keep the area clean. A warm salt water rinse is also helpful in soothing the surgical area. However, when using rinses, do not swish vigorously.
  • Medications: Take your medications exactly as directed. For pain relief, over-the-counter anti-inflammatories can be used to alleviate discomfort and decrease swelling. If the pain persists, call our office immediately.
  • Encourage your child to drink tap or fountain water. If you buy bottled water, make sure that it is fluoridated. Fluoride makes the entire tooth structure more resistant to decay and promotes remineralization.
  • As soon as your childs first teeth come in, begin brushing them with a small, soft-bristled toothbrush and water. If you are considering using toothpaste before your childs second birthday, be sure to ask your dentist first.
  • Pacifier use is typically acceptable after an infant is one month old and has had sufficient time to develop a healthy breast-feeding habit. However, experts recommend that children stop using pacifiers after their second year. Continued use could result in teeth misalignment and the development of a cross-bite, among other issues. Talk with your dentist if you have any other pacifier questions or concerns.

Tooth decay the destruction of the hard, outer layer of your teeth (the enamel) is the most common chronic disease among children. More than 40 percent of children have cavities by the time they reach kindergarten, according to the National Childrens Oral Health Foundation.

What causes tooth decay, and how can it be prevented? Consuming too many sugary drinks and snacks can cause tooth decay. For this reason, you should limit the amount of sugary beverages your child drinks to avoid prolonged exposure of the liquid to teeth. These beverages include soft drinks or sweetened fruit juice.

If you give your child a sippy cup for long periods of time, fill it only with water, and dont allow him or her to take it to bed. When your child begins eating solid foods, you should limit the amount of sugary or starchy snacks, especially food that can get stuck on or between teeth.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that children first see a dentist as early as six months of age and no later than one year of age. During this time, your childs baby teeth will be coming in and Dr. Patel can examine the health of your childs first few teeth. After the first visit, be sure to schedule regular checkups every six months.

Your teeth may feel fine, but its still important to see the dentist regularly because problems can exist without you knowing. Your smiles appearance is important, and your dentist can help keep your smile healthy and looking beautiful. With so many advances in dentistry, you no longer have to settle for stained, chipped, missing, or misshapen teeth. Todays dentists offer many treatment choices that can help you smile with confidence, including:

  • Avoid foods with a lot of sugar (sugar increases the amount of bacteria that grows in your mouth causing more plaque and possibly cavities) and avoid tobacco (this can stain your teeth, cause gum disease, and eventually lead to oral cancer).

Dr. Patel is absolutely, undeniably the nicest dentist I have EVER met. I am typically so scared of dentistry and it has made me avoid the dentist for years. She was so kind in making sure I wasn't anxious and never in pain. She is very transparent about price and takes her time to answer every question. Best dentist in north Fort Worth and beautiful clinic!

Great experience overall. I was looking more for a boutique dentist that actually does the cleaning, versus pawning me off to a technician. State of the art technology and impeccable service is what I found at Ascent. Would highly recommend to friends and family looking for that affordable, bespoke experience.
