Prior to graduation, he spent time as a resident general dentist in Togas, Maine at the oldest VA hospital in the country. In 1983, Dr. Coughlin began practicing in what was to become the first Baystate Dental office in Springfield. He is currently on the staff at Baystate Medical Center, Mercy Hospital and Mary Lane Hospital. Dr. Kevin Coughlin is one of the only dentists in the country with both a Fellowship and Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry. He is also a Fellow in the American Academy of Implantology and a certified instructor in the International Association of Orthodontics.
Since 1983, Dr. Coughlin has placed thousands of dental implants. At Ascent Dental Care, we believe that not all dental implants are created equally and our goal is to identify the most effective dental implant system that also meets each individual patients clinical and aesthetic demands. At Ascent Dental Care, Dr. Coughlin completed a two year continuations program at Harvard Dental School in dental implant placement and is trained to place many different dental implant systems.
An implant supported bridge is a restorative solution for spaces where three or more adjacent teeth are missing. This restoration typically requires two implants to support the porcelain bridge. The bridge provides a functional and aesthetic replacement for a patients natural teeth.
For patients who are missing many or all of their teeth, implant supported dentures may be an alternative to traditional dentures. This solution requires the placement of two or more implants. In order to replace a full arch denture, a minimum of four implants is generally recommended. Eligibility for this solution is dependent upon a number of factors, with jaw bone density being one of the most significant determining factors.
Traditional dentures rely on an acrylic base that sits directly on the gums, held in place by a paste or adhesive. Using implants as supports for dentures allows for a smaller and more comfortable base and less shifting of the prosthesis during use.
Implants can support both full and partial dentures as well as both fixed and removable dentures.If a removable denture is selected, the denture will snap on to the implant rather than requiring the use of denture paste or adhesives.
This procedure is a unique implant solution that allows patients with a completely edentulous (toothless) upper or lower arch to replace all of the teeth in that arch using only four implants as anchors.
There are times when a full size implant is not a viable option, and in many cases an MDI may be a great solution. Small spaces or inadequate bone mass in the jaw may prevent the use of traditional implants. Mini Dental Implants are similar to regular implants but, as the name suggests, are significantly smaller in diameter. Dental implants typically take 2 visits and require a waiting period of a few months from the time of implant placement to the time the permanent replacement tooth can be placed. The placement of MDIs is minimally invasive, often requiring only local anesthetic and no sutures. For this reason, MDIs can often be placed with the final replacement toothin one day.
With this technique, specialized software is used to create custom surgical guides. These guides direct the exact location, angle, and depth of each implant placement. The use of the guide increases the accuracy, efficiency, safety, and predictability of the procedure.

Overall, the staff were all wonderful. Ive had a routine cleaning at their office in Longmeadow and it all went great. Recently, I went in for a wisdom tooth extraction consultation and it was slightly off putting that just to book the appointment for the removal, the office asked for payment in full based on an estimate of what my insurance might cover.

In June 2022 I had 4 dental implants in my lower jaw. I had also planed on crowns for 5 of my upper front teeth. I worked like a dog for a year and a half to save the several thousands of dollars these procedures cost. I was required to pay for everything up front which I did. Instead of getting a new healthy smile I got an infection of my jawbone which required 2 reconstructive surgeries. Since I clearly was not getting what I paid for I requested a refund , which I thought was fair since I've been unable to work after this painful nightmare began. So far I've received a fraction. Of my hard earned money and all I've gotten back was a run around. Ascent Dental has turned my life into a nightmare. DO NOT GO TO ASCENT DENTAL.

Fine for cleanings. Told me I needed two fillings in molars that I'm not totally convinced I needed. Had a chipped tooth that needed to be smoothed out. A month later, the part of my tooth that was smoothed literally fell off after the enamel basically fell off the front of my tooth. I went in for a fix, which was done that day. I'm still in a little pain from it (two months later) and was just sent a second bill that is due in two weeks. They claim it was sent on the 19 yet received it at the start of the new month. I'm not impressed and will be finding somewhere new. Again, general cleanings are great, excluding the constant questions of wanting special things done to your teeth. Anything else, look elsewhere.

Amazing Practice!!! New patient referral to Dr Coughlin ---can not say enough about the professionalism of him and his team. Everything they do / offer is clearly explained and all questions answered in ways anyone can understand. State of the art facility, but more important, extraordinary professionals. The thoroughness and attention to detail --- I've never seen before in any dentist I've had. First visit was for a root canal--- UGH. Never had one before and expected the worst. The root canal was completely painless and done in an amazingly short period of time. Dr Coughlin and his assistant Amber made a great team! There's an old saying, "price is what you pay, value is what you get" --- the value from this team of professionals is off the charts!!! So glad we were referred to Ascent Dental...our family's new dentists!!!

Typically I do not post reviews, but I felt compelled to make an exception here, considering my recent fantastic experience at Ascent Dental. From Alisa at the front desk, who was really helpful and friendly, to Jessie, an amazing dental hygienist, to the personable Dr. Coughlin who puts you at ease while there, everyone truly contributed to a delightful dental visit. If you are able to request Jessie I highly recommend her. She is an incredible dental hygienist who is exceptionally skilled at her craft while also being kind, patient, knowledgeable and professional. If you are looking for a dental practice then look no further as this place is definitely the best!

I don't even know where to begin with how pleased I am with this practice as a whole. I switched dentists after I was unsatisfied with my previous one. I found ADC as a recommendation on my town Facebook page and am so glad I did! Dr. Coughlin is a masterful dentist. He is extremely knowledgeable, and treats his patients with the utmost consideration, care, and sensitivity. There are no questions he cannot answer to ease your worries. His staff members follow suit - everyone in the office is pleasant, courteous, and professional. When I thanked Dr. Coughlin at the end of my initial consultation and then again after my root canal and crown, both times he dismissed that he had anything to do with my care and told me it was his whole team. That just shows the true "team" mentality that he instills in his employees. The office is also very beautiful and zen, you won't even feel like you are at the dentist! Thank you ADC for a first class experience.

Probably the best dentist office I've ever been to! I don't say that lightly. My tooth broke when i was 16 because of my abusive ex boyfriend. Every since then it's been a struggle back and forth with bonds etc. my teeth looked terrible! I went in to see Dr. Lam and can i just say how happy i am that i did. I have state insurance and usually everywhere i go would treat me differently based on that.... Not this place. Dr. lam did 6 crowns on my teeth and did wonderful job. Every since assistant that I've come in contact with is nothing short of friendly and professional. The receptionists there are also great. I would recommend this place to anybody who is looking to get treated respectfully and also have a great dental experience as i know many have not. Thanks to them i can confidently smile in pictures as i have not been able to do in many years

As someone who has had bad experiences with dentists in the past, I cannot say enough of great things about Ascent Dental. I have had tooth extractions, without pain or swelling. The staff is friendly and helpful and I no longer have anxiety when having to go to the dentist. I highly recommend Ascent Dental!

Best dental office I've been to so far. Everyone is very friendly, took the time to listen and answer all my questions thoroughly. Didn't have to wait long at all for my appointment when I got there. They have 3 locations which works great for making appointments. The last location I went to (which will remain un-named), tried to nickel & dime me and told me the ONLY way to fix the issue with my gums was to do an expensive procedure. I never went back and simply began flossing every night. Now my gums are fine. At Ascent, they tell you about things you can try to see if it fixes your issue before considering a procedure. Definitely a place I will recommend to anyone looking for a new dentist.

Very friendly and helpful staff. I usually feel uncomfortable going to the dentist, but Dr. Chou was wonderful. He was so professional and kind. I went there to deal with an ongoing issue that I've been struggling with for years and in two visits it was resolved. I am very thankful and actually looking forward to my next trip to the dentist.
