Prior to graduation, he spent time as a resident general dentist in Togas, Maine at the oldest VA hospital in the country. In 1983, Dr. Coughlin began practicing in what was to become the first Baystate Dental office in Springfield. He is currently on the staff at Baystate Medical Center, Mercy Hospital and Mary Lane Hospital. Dr. Kevin Coughlin is one of the only dentists in the country with both a Fellowship and Mastership in the Academy of General Dentistry. He is also a Fellow in the American Academy of Implantology and a certified instructor in the International Association of Orthodontics.
Since 1983, Dr. Coughlin has placed thousands of dental implants. At Ascent Dental Care, we believe that not all dental implants are created equally and our goal is to identify the most effective dental implant system that also meets each individual patients clinical and aesthetic demands. At Ascent Dental Care, Dr. Coughlin completed a two year continuations program at Harvard Dental School in dental implant placement and is trained to place many different dental implant systems.
An implant supported bridge is a restorative solution for spaces where three or more adjacent teeth are missing. This restoration typically requires two implants to support the porcelain bridge. The bridge provides a functional and aesthetic replacement for a patients natural teeth.
For patients who are missing many or all of their teeth, implant supported dentures may be an alternative to traditional dentures. This solution requires the placement of two or more implants. In order to replace a full arch denture, a minimum of four implants is generally recommended. Eligibility for this solution is dependent upon a number of factors, with jaw bone density being one of the most significant determining factors.
Traditional dentures rely on an acrylic base that sits directly on the gums, held in place by a paste or adhesive. Using implants as supports for dentures allows for a smaller and more comfortable base and less shifting of the prosthesis during use.
Implants can support both full and partial dentures as well as both fixed and removable dentures.If a removable denture is selected, the denture will snap on to the implant rather than requiring the use of denture paste or adhesives.
This procedure is a unique implant solution that allows patients with a completely edentulous (toothless) upper or lower arch to replace all of the teeth in that arch using only four implants as anchors.
There are times when a full size implant is not a viable option, and in many cases an MDI may be a great solution. Small spaces or inadequate bone mass in the jaw may prevent the use of traditional implants. Mini Dental Implants are similar to regular implants but, as the name suggests, are significantly smaller in diameter. Dental implants typically take 2 visits and require a waiting period of a few months from the time of implant placement to the time the permanent replacement tooth can be placed. The placement of MDIs is minimally invasive, often requiring only local anesthetic and no sutures. For this reason, MDIs can often be placed with the final replacement toothin one day.
With this technique, specialized software is used to create custom surgical guides. These guides direct the exact location, angle, and depth of each implant placement. The use of the guide increases the accuracy, efficiency, safety, and predictability of the procedure.

Sarah was very thorough and explained what would take place. She was very pleasant and as she cleaned my teeth she would check on me. She was also very encouraging about how I cleaned and flossed my teeth. The receptionist explained my account and asked about my experience. The Dr. Checked my X-rays and explained next step. Very good experience

The hygienist Nicole is so incredibly patient and made my visit so comfortable. Dr. Coughlin did such a thorough exam and answered all of my questions and didn't rush me . I felt like I was the only one in the office (even though I wasn't ) which is the kind of service I'm not used to anymore.

I agree with all the other five-star reviews. I used to be terrified of dental procedures and hated the whole experience. Now, despite having numerous (and ongoing!) significant dental needs, I don't dread it at all. This office uses all the latest technologies and procedures which are huge improvements over past techniques I've experienced. I love the staff I've had - Dr. Shah, Sara, and Natalie most often, and everyone is friendly and welcoming.

Nicole the hygienist was amazing. She was very professional, took great care of me. She also gave me a lot of very helpful tips. Dr Shah was also very great. He was able to identify and point out things to me that explained some issues that I had for years but never understood. Nicole and the front office team is also great.

Dr. Coughlin is an excellent dentist, his staff is courteous and professional and his offices are state of the art. I had numerous periodontal and dental issues before seeing Dr. Coughlin and all have been expertly resolved. Although people often joke about dreading dental visits, going to Ascent Dental and seeing Dr. Coughlin is always a pleasant experience! I have no hesitation in highly recommending Ascent Dental and Dr. Coughlin to others.

I had the most lovely experience with Nicole the hygienist. She displays genuine interest and concern in her patients, and prioritized my comfort throughout the cleaning by guiding me through each step in the process. I had my routine cleaning at the new Longmeadow office with Sara. The new office is beautiful! (Well, all are- Sara was extremely nice, personable, and thorough. It was the best cleaning I've ever had. Both her and Dr Shah answered all my questions. The best decision I made was switch to Ascent Dental Care.
