Dr. Anzalone is a board-certified periodontist, an honor awarded to those who have demonstrated knowledge and skill well beyond the mandatory educational requirements of the specialty. Board certification can only be earned after passing comprehensive and rigorous examinations on all aspects of periodontics, and has only been achieved by approximately 10 percent of periodontists in the United States.
Dr. Anzalone graduated from Northeast Louisiana University in 1996 and Louisiana State University Dental School in 2000. His education continued with a one-year General Practice Residency at the VA Hospital in Biloxi, MS, followed by one year of private practice in general dentistry. Dr. Anzalone then decided to pursue specialty training in periodontics.
Starting in 2002, he served a three-year residency in periodontics at Louisiana State University, graduating with his periodontal certificate in 2005. He then returned to Monroe to start delivering periodontal services to the community in private practice.
Dr. Anzalone believes in staying on the cutting edge of technology so he can continually provide his patients with the most comfortable and effective treatments. He attends numerous continuing education seminars each year to stay technically up-to-date and take advantage of new developments.

Gum disease Gum disease is a continuous bacterial infection and inflammation of the gums. The bacteria emit toxins that eat away the ligaments and bone surrounding the teeth. As the disease becomes more severe, the bone loss worsens until tooth support is minimal or gone altogether. This can cause teeth to loosen or even fall out.
A missing tooth The bone in your jaw needs stimulation from regular biting and chewing pressure to maintain its volume and density. Once a tooth is missing, that pressure is absent and the bone gradually dissolves away.
A misaligned toothA tooth can be misaligned so that it fails to make contact with the tooth in the opposing arch when you bite down. This can severely reduce the chewing and biting pressure on the misaligned tooth and can result in bone loss.
Dr. Anzalone places bone graft material into the space where bone is missing in order to add bone volume. Rather than take bone from another part of the body, he uses lab-processed material that is equally effective and noninvasive.
The graft material itself does not actually turn into new bone. It stimulates the regeneration of new bone tissue by the body and acts as a scaffold (platform) around which the new bone grows. The graft material harmlessly dissolves away as new bone tissue fills the space.
To determine where a graft needs to be placed, Dr. Anzalone takes a digital panoramic X-ray of your entire mouth. The panoramic X-ray provides a detailed two-dimensional view of all your teeth, the bone levels in your jaw, your sinus cavities and other anatomical structures.
When needed to guarantee strong regeneration of new bone, Dr. Anzalone will mix a powerful formulation of biological growth proteins in with the bone graft material. These proteins greatly intensify the regeneration of new bone tissue by providing added stimulation for new cell growth. They also reduce any post-treatment discomfort.
The latest innovation for treating receding gums is the Chao Pinhole Surgical Technique, a minimally invasive treatment that requires no grafting and can effectively correct gum recession over your entire mouth in as little as two hours. Dr. Anzalone is one of only a few dental practitioners in the United States who is certified to deliver this breakthrough procedure.
No incisions or sutures are required with the pinhole technique. Instead, Dr. Anzalone makes a tiny entrance point in the gums, about the size of a pinhole, and uses tiny specialized instruments to loosen the gum tissue and reposition it over the exposed tooth roots. There is little to no post-operative discomfort and healing time is usually less than a day.
