Dr. DeShield-Mayes graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a double major in Chemistry and African Studies. In 2009, she graduated from the UNC-Chapel Hill Adams School of Dentistry (UNC-ASOD) and has worked in both private and public health dentistry. She also has a Masters of Public Administration with a concentration in Health Care from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
Dr. DeShield-Mayes started her career with FirstHealth Dental Care Centers, which is a nonprofit dental center that serves the underserved youth of North Carolina. She has served as an adjunct faculty member at the UNC-ASOD and enjoys mentoring students and new graduates from both UNC-ASOD and East Carolina School of Dental Medicine. Dr. DeShield-Mayes served as the President of the North Carolina Dental Society 3rd District from 2016-2020, which covers 13 counties including Guilford. She is an active member and has held numerous leadership positions in the Old North State Dental Society, Greensboro Medical Society, American Dental Association, and North Carolina Dental Society since she graduated dental school. Dr. DeShield-Mayes is most proud of being married to the love of her life and mother to her beautiful baby girl!
The practice philosophy of Best Smile Dental is to offer the highest quality of care possible in a timely, efficient, and professional manner. It is our goal to meet our patients functional requirements and esthetics demands to the best of our ability. Each new and existing patient will be provided with a thorough exam and diagnosis. We will then explain to the patients understanding, their diagnosis, treatment options, costs, and the possible outcomes of treatment. However, prevention of disease and improved health will always be the primary determinate of each created treatment plan.
We aim to treat each patient as if he or she is a family member, and effective communication between doctor and patient is always practiced. Dental treatment is a cooperative effort between the patient and the dental team, and we encourage questions and suggestions. Our specially trained staff attends regular continuing education courses and is knowledgeable of the new trends and techniques in the field of dentistry.
I will try to the utmost of my ability to make every visit to our office a positive dental experience and to provide a gentle and caring approach to comprehensive dental treatment for the whole family.

This is a very professional establishment and the dentists are extremely knowledgeable. Not only are they friendly staff members, but they are compassionate towards the people who patronize their business. My children and I feel safe and quite comfortable when when are there. I am also aware of an amazing outreach program to serve other people around the world. I recommend Best Smiles Dental office to people of all ages.

Dr. DeShield and her staff are the kindest people. I was new in the neighborhood, and I found out about them on an advertisement of my Harris Teeter shopping cart. Rosa is my hygienist, and she seems to know how to make me feel comfortable (well, as comfortable as one can be in a dentist chair). I'm not good at brushing and flossing, and I hate going to the dentist. But somehow, I'm happy to keep coming back to have them treat my gingivitis and help me get into a routine to get my teeth healthy. This may sound funny, but even though my insurance pays for going to the dentist every six months, I'd prefer going to Best Smile every three months. I know me, and I don't want plaque to build up too much between visits. So, frequent visits for more preventative care is just fine with me. What can I say... great people, great synergy, healthier teeth. I am very happy with Best Smile, and I highly recommend them!

Excellent pediatric care. Takes time to discuss home habits and how to improve dental care beyond a standard response of "floss and brush every day". Really appreciate the engagement with patient (child) and thorough conversation with parent to proved best care.

My first appointment was a couple days ago and I loved it. I have never had a dentist office make me feel so comfortable. I love Dr.DeShield already I can tell she is very genuine in her work. The staff treated my daughter with kindness and patience. This is really a wonderful dental office and would recommend it to anyone. I feel so comfortable walking into a place where the people treating me looks like me.

I just had my first appointment in three years on yesterday. Dr. Deshield-Mayes and her entire staff are the best. From the time I made my appointment on the phone to the time I sat in the chair, everyone made me feel comfortable.
