Dr. Shoumer earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 2002.She completed a general dentistry residency at Virtua Hospital and then an additional year of training in advanced restorative dentistry residency at the University of Pennsylvania.Through her extensive graduate studies, she discovered that dentistry is the perfect blending of art, science, and personal interaction.
Her commitment to partnering with patients for optimal care inspires her to be a true lifelong learner.She continuously advances her knowledge through hundreds of hours of continuing education.She has studied at the prestigious Pankey Institute, and the Spear Institute to obtain advanced knowledge in occlusion, esthetics and training in disorders of the TMJ (jaw joint and supporting muscles). Dr. Shoumer has completed the Mastery Series with the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. AADSM.This governing body, considered the gold standard for clinicians treating sleep apnea, ensures the highest standards for patient treatment.Dr Shoumer is one of a small percentage of dentists to earn the status of AADSM Diplomate.
Dr. Shoumers extensive training allows her to partner with her patients to achieve a higher level of oral health and beauty and greater overall wellness.She works closely with other dental specialists, a fabulous dental ceramics laboratory, physicians, physical therapists and of course her well-trained friendly team in the office to coordinate the best possible dental care for her patients.
When not in the office, she is the mother of three active daughters and resides in Wayne with her husband and three energetic dogs.Now that you know a bit of her story, she looks forward to learning a bit of yours!

Andrea has been a hygienist for more than 20 years. She has always had a love for dentistry and for providing excellent care for her patients. She is thrilled to be part of Dr. Shoumers staff. Everyone is very welcoming in the office and I have developed a strong rapport with my patients. Andrea is married with three children and two very active German Shorthaired Pointers. In her free time, she enjoys her family and watching her kids play sports. She enjoys cooking and is forever in the kitchen. She is addicted to new cookbooks and trying recipes!
Donna has been a hygienist for over 35 years.She grew up in Ohio and had planned on being a music teacher but, instead, she enrolled in a dental hygiene program.She has no regrets and feels she has the best of both worlds- a great careerthatallows her to interact with a variety of people and help her patients through education andproviding quality care.And, she still plays her French horn.Donna loves being part of the supportive, caring, and patient-centered team led by Dr. Shoumer.
In addition to music, Donna loves animals.She currently has 3 cats: Nick, Nora, & Myrrh, and a white German Shepherd, named Asta.Donnas goal is to become a docent at the Philadelphia Zoo, one of her favorite places tovisit.
Gina is a highly trained andexperienced dental hygienist who joined Dr. Shoumer in January 2016. She is enthusiastic because of Dr. Shoumers commitment to comprehensive dental care in a comfortable setting with a very caring and competent staff of professionals. Ginas love for people and love for her profession flourish in Dr. Shoumers practice where she is able to utilize her exceptional skills to assist each patient in managing a lifetime of oral health. Gina is married with two daughters and an adorable grandson. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, as well as cooking and reading. She also volunteers on Sundays at Divine Providence Village, a facility for special needs adults.
Justinehas been in the dental field for the past 9 years and has successfully engaged in multiple roles throughout that time. She has experience as a Dental Assistant, in the OR, as a Patient Coordinator, and with Dental Sleep Medicine as well as in Practice Marketing. Justine loves helping patients in any way she can and enjoys working as part of the Shoumer team to resolve patient needs. Outside of the office,Justinelikes to spend time with her family and keeps busy chasing after her daughter, twin baby boys, 2 pups and cat.
Karen began working in the field in 1986 as a dental assistant, then continued her education at Harcum College in 2007 to get her EFDA (Expanded Function Dental Assistant) license. She takes great pride in patient care and continuing education. What Karen likes most about our practice is that everyone that works here is like one big family and we all get along. As for patients, seeing how happy they are when they leave here with a new smile is the best feeling. It really makes the day exciting!
Karen lives in Wayne with her husband Chris and her Maine Coon cats. On most weekends she spends time with the Valley Forge AudubonSociety on guided bird walks allover beautiful Chester County. She also enjoysspending time with her daughter Lindsay,photography, the beach, and gardening.
Lindsay graduated from Cabrini University in 2019 with a Bachelors Degree in English and Creative Writing. Lindsay has been around dentistry her whole life and has always had an interest in the field. Dr. Shoumer and her mother, Karen, (an EFDA in this office) have been amazing mentors as Lindsay further develops her skills and experience as a Dental Assistant. Outside of the office, Lindsay likes to spend time with her family, boyfriend and her cats. She enjoys shopping and taking walks around the Chesterbrook trails.
As the owner ofGeary Medical Management, Marcia handles finance and marketing and other business issues as they arise. Dr. Shoumer has been a client of GMM since it opened in 2013. Marcia keeps busy outside of the office with her consulting company, as well as her husband and their blended family of six children, all at various stages of their busy lives!
Do you have trouble sleeping? If so, youre not alone. An estimated 22 million Americans suffer from a lack of sleepand even exhaustioncaused by sleep apnea. Chronic snoring problems and interrupted sleep arent just an inconvenience. Untreated sleep apnea can lead to more serious health risks. Sleep apnea is a common but serious sleep disorder that causes interruptions in breathing during sleep.
When we sleep, the combination of gravity and our muscles relaxing allows the tongue and surrounding soft tissues to fall back into the throat, obstructing airflow in the airway. This causes pauses in breathing. These pauses are called apneas.
The word apnea means without breath. A person may have partial pauses in breathing (hypopneas) or complete pauses (apneas) that last 10 seconds or longer during sleep. These pauses in breathing are often accompanied by a drop in blood oxygen level.
The struggle to breathe and the drop in oxygen saturation will eventually cause the person to momentarily arouse, opening the throat allowing them to breathe again. These arousals are brief and typically not remembered the next morning. Longer apneas may cause the sufferer to fully awaken to a frightening feeling of choking. This pattern can occur hundreds of times per night, interrupting the bodys normal sleep cycle and preventing the deep, restorative sleep our bodies need.
