Dr. Brooks is a graduate of the University of North Carolina Dental School in Chapel Hill receiving a DDS. She is a graduate of the Louisiana State University Medical School in New Orleans receiving a MD. She completed residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Louisiana State University Medical Center.
Dr. Brooks is a recipient of the American Society of Dentistry for Children Award and the Dwight C. Clark Memorial Award. She also received a Sigma Xi research award and was an active tutor and teaching assistant in medical histology and dental biochemistry.
Dr. Brooks holds a dental license with anesthesia permit as well as a medical license in North Carolina. She maintains privileges at Grace Hospital - Blue Ridge Healthcare Morganton and membership in the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Dental Association, Western Piedmont Dental Society, North Carolina Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, First District Dental Society and the American Medical Association. Dr. Brooks is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Basic Life Support (BLS).
In 2005, Dr. Brooks, DDS, MD, completed accreditation for Diplomate status of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Board certification signifies Dr. Brooks has reached the highest standard of training and expertise.
Dr. Brooks recently completed the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) 2013 Recertification Examination ensuring that Dr. Brooks remains compliant with certification regulations through 2025.
The Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery recently published an article by Dr. Amy Brooks. Delayed Complications of Tooth Extraction in Patients Taking Warfarin, Antibiotics, and Other Medicines appeared in the April issue. April 2011, 69:pgs 977-979.
In Dr. Brooks office, local anesthesia and intravenous (IV) conscious sedation are commonly administered to make patients of all ages feel comfortable and relaxed. Patients are closely monitored by certified oral surgical assistants and sophisticated nGenuity Criticare Scholar monitors.
To help reduce discomfort with local anesthesia, Dr. Brooks uses the Wand injection device in conjunction with flavored topical anesthetics, EMLA topical anesthetic cream, ethyl chloride spray and hypoallergenic tape. Dr. Brooks office is inspected and permitted by the North Carolina Board of Dental Examiners.
Dr. Amy Brooks is an active member in the North Carolina Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Western Piedmont Dental Association, American Dental Association, and the American Medical Association.
Training to become an oral surgeon includes a significant amount of time and experience to the understanding and administration of local anesthesia, conscious sedation and general anesthesia. The office maintains an automated external defibrillator (AED) for the safety of the nearby public and patients.
At Dr. Brooks' office all oral surgical assistants are accredited by the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Anesthesia Assistants Program and attend annual review courses. Dr. Brooks holds an Advanced Cardiac Life Support certificate and Pediatric Advanced Life Support. All office staff members maintain Basic Life Support accreditation.
Chris has more than 20 years experience in the field of oral surgery and is well versed in all aspects of assisting both hospital and office. Currently Chris has moved to the Administrative side of the office and is the Insurance Coordinator and Senior Business Associate. Because software and electronic business transactions change at a rapid pace, Chris manages to stay abreast and seek greater efficiency in managing the business as technology develops. She is a graduate of Western Piedmont Community College and is a certified dental assistant with OMAAP and DAANCE certifications.
Kim has over 22 years of experience in the oral surgery field. Kim greets patients and performs the duties of an oral surgical assistant such as obtaining vital signs, taking X-rays, reviewing health histories and verifying treatment plans. She is a graduate of Gaston Community College and Central Piedmont Community College. She is certified by the National Board of Dental Assistants and has OMAAP and DAANCE certifications. Being the most experienced oral surgical assistant on the team, Kim actively supervises other assistants and maintains the clinical aspects of patient flow.
Ashley has over 12 years of experience in the oral surgery field. Her initial introduction to the work came by way of her Freedom High School Senior Project. Ashley has an Associate Degree in Applied Science Dental Hygiene from Guilford Technical Community College. She took her prerequisite coursework in Dental Hygiene from Western Piedmont Community College. Ashley successfully completed in 2012 the Dental Anesthesia Assistant National Certification Examination (DAANCE) and thus has two nationally recognized certifications in dental hygiene and oral surgical assisting.
