My husband had already been in pain for a week when went to a scheduled appointment for a tooth extraction this morning at an oral surgeon's office. In addition to his toothache, he woke up this morning with a migraine, which lead him to vomit before we left for his appointment. When we got to the oral surgeon's office, they refused to extract his tooth because he had vomited. We were devastated at the thought of him having to go through another weekend in terrible pain. I called Ammons Dental on James Island and they told us to come right over. They were booked, but they kindly squeezed him in. He was sedated and his tooth was removed. He feels so much better! The staff were all so kind! From my initial phone call until the time we left, they took exceptional care of him. We are so thankful!

I was a patient since this office opened in 2016, receiving preventative cleaning services, fillings, braces, etc. The lack of care this office gives to their patients paired with the high employee turnover is shocking. After completing my ortho (which was rushed because the doctor was retiring) my bottom bracket continued to break. The new dentist attempted to glue it back with the warning "if it broke again I would have to go somewhere else and pay for them to put a different type of wire in". This comment took me by surprise because I had just paid over 5k to this office for my braces/ortho treatment. My bottom bracket has since broken again, causing my teeth to shift. I received a second opinion from another orthodontist and was told I would need 8 months - 1 year of additional treatment. Completely disappointed by Ammons Dental by Design.

The bad: I prefer a more thorough cleaning by the hygienist. Too much verbal probing not enough tartar scraping. Dental fees for my crown and composite were 30-50% higher than a couple local dental offices. Always shop your treatment plans! 3 phone calls ended up saving me $250. Front office would not budge on the pricing when I called them back. The good: Fantastic dentist with a good personality. Xray machinery is top notch. Parking is plentiful as it's located next to CVS in the Harris Teeter parking lot

The James Island team has been nothing less then amazing and attentive to my dental needs. I would highly recommend this caring and compassionate team for all of your oral care needs. Update: If I could give Dr. Ammons and the rest of his team 1,000 stars I would. Not only did they answer the phone after hours but Dr. Ammons himself met me at the office at 9pm to help alleviate my pain and perform emergency oral surgery. I was again seen immediate the next morning at 7am so that my new treatment plan could be made. I have never heard of a dental practice being so compassionate and committed to their patients. They really are a one in a million team.

Update: Over the last week since posting this, the Regional Manager has been in touch and sincerely apologized. We scheduled an appointment at the Downtown location, cleaned my teeth and did my initial sleep apnea consultation. She has been in contact with me regarding the insurance and I feel confident that we are passed this period of chaos. Just wanted my praise to be as loud as my grumbling was. I'm befuddled reading the reviews and comparing my experience. A fairly new resident to Charleston, I decided to seek a dentist versus driving back to Pooler GA to get my teeth cleaned. That's all I've needed every six months for the past few years and when I received this offices flyer in the mail, I saw they also offered sleep apnea services so I was sold! I attempted services at the Downtown location and they were not the greatest mainly due to staffing issues, and the hygienist made mention the the James Island location may be able to help. So here we go.... The Scene - Immaculate. The entire office from the sidewalk to the care rooms is pristine, well decorated, and stocked with the essentials they need at hand. The Service - It was mentioned at the other office that this location was fully staffed and may be able to help me better so I came to give it a try. I made my appointment over the phone and gave all my information. I arrived early to get my new patient paperwork done and was called back immediately. Despite having x-rays at the other location about 30 days prior, they wanted their own. As soon as I opened my mouth, the hygienist looked at me and then the paperwork and asked me for my name and date of birth. She indicated that she thought she would be doing a full mouth debridement but she didn't think that was necessary at all. My gum line was free of anything that would prevent the dentist from doing a thorough exam so she was not recommending that happen. I was pleased because it was something I contested at the other office as I brush thoroughly and have always had dental insurance. However, this office reached an impasse as well as they had not gotten my insurance information to give me a quote and because it was an early appointment they could not just call them. So I left with a treatment plan and was told that they would need to get the pre-authorization for the sleep apnea treatment and their portion before they could give me a total. We made my second appointment 3 weeks out as I was going out of town for 2 weeks and that gave them "more than enough time" to get things situated for my visit. Well, after returning and no call backs, I called them because my appointment was that week. I was told that they had not gotten the proper information from my insurance so we couldn't proceed. This is where I lost faith because my appointment was that week and no one had called to tell me anything so it was going to be a waste of my time to come in. I asked her to simply clean my teeth and forget the additional services. She tried to get me to just keep the appointment and pay whatever total they gave me which could be $17 or almost $500. She wasn't sure. I asked to just have my teeth cleaned again and was sent to someone else. Unfortunately, I have a slight hearing deficit and he had a thick accent so I was having difficulty understanding what he was saying but it summed up to rolling the dice. I ended up canceling my appointment. Parting thoughts - Here I am, almost 60 days of trying to get a routine teeth cleaning which has now passed the time frame to get my second free cleaning of the year before my wedding. I'm completely bummed and not sure why I haven't had the same experience that everyone else is raving about!

I can't even describe how AMAZING my experience with Ammons was. When I came in I was in a seemingly hopeless situation. I was seeing another dentist for OVER A YEAR with no progress or results toward a broken bridge that left me with a huge space and 2 posted teeth. He recommended unnecessary treatments and Oral Surgery that would cost over $20K. He recommended extractions and dental implants that were so far out of reach for me I gave up. He didn't even so much as clean my teeth. Then I came in to Ammons and they changed my life! On my first visit with Dr. Hustead and team I had an affordable solution that included deep teeth cleaning, fixing cavities, and a brand new appliance to replace one that broke after 15 years of use. My very difficult case was completed in 3 appointments in less than 90 days and I am BLOWN AWAY by how great it looks. The cost was less than what I spent on a year's worth of useless appointments at my other dentist. Not only did he save me from the wrong and terribly negligent advice from my old dentist, but Dr. Hustead gave me details on next steps that could take my smile a step further to being near perfect when I can afford to invest in additional work. Long story short, Dr. Hustead and the full team at Ammons, I LOVE YOU ALL!!! I cried after I got home with my new smile. I never thought my teeth could look this good, and I was so scared that if I couldn't come up with $20K I'd be stuck with no solution. Thank you to each and every team member at Ammons who made me feel like part of the family and not just dollar signs. This is how all businesses should operate.

I had a root canal preformed here 1 year ago and a crown placed. After only a year my tooth began to hurt again. After having it examined by an endodontist, he concluded that the dentist at Ammons Dental missed a canal and the tooth had an infection. I had to pay for another root canal and go through pain all over again.

Then entire welcoming staff made the experience affordable, as pain free as possible and I am delighted with the results.
