My patients often ask me why I became a dentist, and I dont really have a straight answer. I was lucky to come to the US as a refugee with my parents and sister. We did not speak English. I worked as a salesperson at a local store and enrolled at Bunker Hill Community College to learn English as quickly as I could. I then transferred to Northeastern University as a biology major, although I was still unsure of what profession to choose.
I did realize that I like to work with my hands but also want to work with people. My neighbor, who was a dental hygienist, recommended trying dental hygiene because it involved both manual dexterity and people skills.
It was my mom who found an ad in the local paper about an available dental assistant position. I had nothing to lose, so I called the office, and I was honest about having zero experience in the field. They gave me a week to try the position out, and I ended up getting hired in just a few days.
I loved my dental assistant job because it reminded me of my favorite hobbies cooking and baking. The job required mixing alginates and different kinds of stones in correct proportions to get a good result.
I also had a lot of respect for the dentist I worked for, Dr. Segal, who influenced me to pursue a career as a prosthodontist. So, I finished my Bachelors Degree in 2.5 years and, along with my sister, got into Tufts Dental School. After receiving my DMD degree, I went to a 3-year Prosthodontics Residency Program at Tufts. Although the school was hard, I love my Alma mater- Tufts Dental School. After graduation, besides working in private practice, I also have been teaching as a clinical faculty at Tufts Dental for nearly a decade.
I consider myself a lucky person to be able to do what I love. My patients satisfaction and appreciation are the best rewards for hard work. And I get to share my experience, both happiness and sometimes hardships, with my best friend in life and my partner in business my sister, Yana!
Being born only eleven months apart, my sister Inna and I have been best friends since I was born. I started school a little earlier because it was easier for our parents to have kids in the same grade. Therefore we were together throughout kindergarten, elementary, middle, and high school.
I always wanted to be in the medical field, though not necessarily dentistry. There was a period of time when I wanted to be a famous chef too like a true Armenian, I love food, and I know how good food should taste!
After moving to the US, I worked various jobs while learning English at Bunker Hill Community College. One day my mother saw an ad in the local newspaper a dental office was looking for a dental assistant. Inna called and got an interview because the dentist liked how she sounded on the phone. She loved working as a dental assistant at the prosthodontists office and told me to try it, too.
In 2006, after dental school graduation, I got married and moved to NY. I moved back to MA in 2017 with my husband because I missed home. I started working as a general dentist at a family practice on the South Shore and expanding my family. We are blessed with three beautiful daughters.
