Dr. Joseph Wetherhold graduated as an undergraduate from University of San Diego, then went on to graduate from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, located in Boston, Mass. He also went with the peace corps to Honduras to help teach fish farming.
Dr. Wetherhold recently completed an implant course in the Dominican Republic where he was able to continue his training on implant dentistry all while providing well needed dentistry for the people of the Dominican.
Registered Dental Hygienist Lindsay graduated from university of New England in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science in dental hygiene. She has been working with Dr. Wetherhold since 2015. In Lindsays free time she enjoys traveling, hiking, hanging with her dog Annie and trying new vegan restaurants.
Janelle has been with Alta Dental since February 2019. She graduated with high honors from The University of New England in 2008 with a Bachelors of Science in Dental Hygiene and a Minor in Business Administration; she was selected to represent her school by travelling and presenting her research at the 84th Annual Session Dental Hygiene Convention in New Orleans. She has a love for continued education and has expanded her knowledge over the years to include licensing/certification in multiple dental programs, including administration of local anesthesia. Her passion for helping others inspired her to travel to the Dominican Republic, as part of a medical mission group, where she completed a variety of tasks despite the cultural and language barriers; she also volunteered her time and dental skills at a non-profit clinic in Portland for immigrants. Her experiences over the past decade plus have enabled her to have a more precise understanding of a wide range of dental treatments and an astute ability to explain these procedures to her patients. Her compassion for teaching others continues in her weekend work as a ski instructor. During her time away from work, Janelle enjoys spending time with family and exploring the outdoors; she finds pleasure in sports of all seasons and can be found anywhere from the ocean to high atop a mountain.

The best experience I've ever had with dental work (and I've had way too much dental work). Comfortable office, very clean, entirely painless, close to no wait, incredibly efficient work. The equipment is state of the art and comfortable. The work itself is remarkably smooth and seamless. All of the staff are friendly and professional. 100/100 will only go here in the future.

First let me point out that I have never had a bad experience at this office and because of that my bias would run hugely in their favor. I used to be petrified of going to the dentist. To me it meant pain and suffering and I would avoid it. Then I started coming to Alta. It is a warm, friendly, upbeat and professional setting. The building is gorgeous and in my opinion provides extra comfort while being there because of the beautiful architecture of the building. The staff is wonderful and the dentist is fantastic. I have never once suffered pain from going there or after leaving there. I have recommended people going to Alta several times, most recently to my chiropractor. I cannot imagine anyone not feeling at home and like they are in good hands there. I am very thankful this practice is local and available to me. I hope this helps others who may be considering going to this practice.

Throughout several years of being a patient at Alta Dental I have not had a bad experience. I am impressed with the friendliness and professionalism of everyone I've worked with so far. My favorite hygienist so far is Janelle. The facility is clean and has some built-in charm due to the rustic feel of the exposed timbers from the original owner/builder/occupant. Both of my sons are clients and have had good experiences as well. Before the CoViD-19 disruption they had a variety of prize machines you could spend your tokens on after a successful cleaning (sorry, for children only!).

My first visit to Alta Dental as a new patient was wonderful! I appreciated how reasonable both Dr. Wetherhold and the hygienist, Lindsay Paulus, were. Their services were great and it's nice to know I won't have an adversarial relationship with my dentist from now on as I did with my previous one.

I can't say enough about the quality of care I have received by all of the people at Alta Dental of Maine. I have dealt with a number of difficult circumstances with my dental health and have been treated with the utmost care and concern for my wellbeing as well as fair and reasonable prices. Thank you so much for making me feel comfortable in a very uncomfortable situation!

I'm 68 years old. Have seen many dentist and hygienist. This Freeport office offers the best attention from the front desk to the chair. My hygienist is the best. Hard work, thorough,and a great personality. I love her. She's the best.

Best dentist I've ever had. Prompt service, friendly staff, excellent dentistry performed. They manage all the insurance for you so it's hassle free. I have been going here for years now and although I do not live near it now, I travel to get my dental work done there because they are the BEST.

called doc wetherhold on sat 6-6 at 8:00 am because i was having some very painful symptoms with my # 14 tooth ? the doc set up an apt for 11:00 am that day at the shop ! exam x-rays on # 14 & all looked healthy but x-ray indicated inflammation in my lower left side sinus that he diagnosed was probably the problem i had no idea & had been suffering with a serious bacterial chronic sinus infection since feb 19th ! the doc is a 'super star' as is with every member of his team ! tu soooo much for your pleasant professionl assistance especially during this covid19 pandemic ! greatly appreciated ! a huge shout-out to olivia !! way ta go 'mighty warrior' peter

Everyone at Alta Dental has always been pleasant and caring. They are efficient and thorough. The wait time is very low. They always suggest procedures that are best for the patient, never procedures that just generate revenue. The dental assistants are all knowledgeable and professional, and Dr. Wetherhold is the best!

Excellent dental care, particularly amidst the pandemic. The practice is going above and beyond recommended safety procedures. Upon arrival, you are instructed to call or text to have a technician come to your car to perform a temperature check. All employees are wearing masks, hand sanitizer is readily available. There were even air purifiers in the exam room. Highly recommend this practice, and greatly appreciate the precautions they are taking.
