Alper Periodontics & Implants is a local, independently owned dental practice and has enjoyed a 35+ year presence in Melrose, Massachusetts, just north of Boston. Dr. Paul Alper opened his periodontal practice in 1971, and in 1995 his son, Dr. Joel Alper, associated with him to form Alper Periodontics & Implants.
Dr. Joel Alper specializes in the treatment of periodontal (gum) disease and dental implants. This ranges from therapies that aid in repairing damaged supporting structures of the teeth to cosmetic treatments that improve appearance to permanent solutions for lost teeth.
Treating every patient with compassion, respect, and understanding is a priority for Dr. Joel and his caring staff. Our patients comfort is a crucial component of our high-quality dental care, from the first moment a patient contacts our office until visits become more routine.
Although not required, a patient usually comes to our office by a referral from his or her restorative dentist, friend, or family member. Dr. Joel works closely with every patients dentist throughout treatment as this communication is crucial to ensuring a successful treatment outcome. Alper Periodontics & Implants is state-of-the-art. Computers enable us to document every patients case, view and store dental photographs and utilize our in office CAT scan for precise treatment planning and placement of dental implants. Dr. Alper can also access the internet for a range of activities, from studying medications and possible interactions to communicating with your restorative dentist. And our office is equipped with surgical telescopic lenses employing fiber optic lighting, making less invasive procedures possible and allowing for easier and quicker recovery.
Dr. Joel was raised in Lexington, MA and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Rochester in New York in 1989. In 1993, Dr. Joel earned a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. While in dental school, Dr. Joel was awarded a fellowship for research in the field of TMJ/TMD and received awards in Recognition for Excellence in Fixed Prosthodontics and Removable Partial Prosthodontics. In 1995, Dr. Joel earned a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies after completing his residency in Periodontology from Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine.
Dr. Joel has been a member of the TriCounty Dental Study Club since 1993 and the Assistant Treasurer of the East Middlesex District Dental Society for over ten years. He participates with Donated Dental Service, volunteering time to individuals who are disabled, elderly or medically compromised and cannot afford necessary treatment. Dr. Joel belongs to the American Academy of Periodontology, the American Dental Association, and the Massachusetts Dental Society.
Dr. Paul Alper was raised in Gloucester, MA and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Boston University College of Liberal Arts in 1961. In 1965, Dr. Paul earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from New York University College of Dentistry. And in 1967, he earned a post-graduate degree in Periodontology from Boston University School of Dental Medicine. In 1971, after three years in the Air Force, Dr. Paul opened his private practice in Melrose, MA.
In 1973, Dr. Paul founded the Tri-County Dental Study Club, an influential study club for area dentists and on which he served as President since its inception. Dr. Paul was also the Treasurer of the East Middlesex District Dental Society for over ten years. Dr. Paul was a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the American Dental Association, and the Massachusetts Dental Society where he was actively involved in the annual Yankee Dental Congress for almost fifteen years. Later in his career, Dr. Paul donated time over the course of a decade as a clinical instructor at Boston University School of Dental Medicine in the post-graduate department of Periodontology and Oral Biology.

Dr. Alper listened to me showing real interest in the problems that worries me, and explained to me his recommendation very clearly. He was very careful while doing the exam. Donna, his assistant is very warm and efficient. The girls at the front desk were very helpful. I felt that I was in good hands, saved and welcome.

Dr. Alper has a great bedside manner. He talks you through the entire procedure and checks in along the way. The staff is great as well. Highly recommend!

I have been going to Dr. Alper now for 10 years. At the time I first went there I was living in Nahant and my commute was good. I did only one periodontist procedure and it was absolutely great and he explained everything to me while he was performing it. He is an excellent doctor and he is "Honest"! After that procedure, I only went there for cleaning and have not had any other perio work needed. 8 years ago when I moved out of the area and moved to west of Boston I was sure I wouldn't go to his office any longer because of my long commute and try to find another doctor in my area. This never happened! Eventhough I did find a general dentist in my area and I go to regularly, I also go to Dr. Alpers office once a year for their cleaning and check up. I absolutely love the way Dr. Alper and his staff treat me and have seen how they treat other patients with respect . I highly recommend him!!!

Susan is a very competent hygienist. She explained every step of my cleaning and made sure to offer up suggestions to improve my dental hygiene. Dr Alper thoroughly explained his findings after my exam and presented me with several options. The office staff was very friendly and professional.

Great periodontist! Super nice guy, very calming, and excellent. Dr Alper and his whole office are helpful and create great experience. I've had several different procedures over the years. They have been great each time! Very good when giving novacaine, one of my least favorite parts, usually pain free.
