Dr. Joel Wiersum completed his undergraduate studies in biology and chemistry before attending dental school at the University of Minnesota, where he graduated with his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree in 1991. He has been practicing in the Kodiak area since his graduation, beginning in the public health services at the Kodiak Area Native Association. In 1995, he became the sole proprietor of Alaska Smile Center. He strives to remain current with all dental techniques in order to provide his patients with the best possible care.

Dr. Wiersum was born in Wisconsin, but he considers Alaska his home. He is a typical Alaskan outdoorsman who loves to take a boat out fishing. He is also a family man with four children, and he enjoys spending time with them. He is involved in his community through the support of local youth sports teams.
