Despite being uncomfortable, dry mouth alone is not a severe issue as long as it is not persistent. If it is, it can lead to various long-term health issues, ranging from irritating to dangerous. Someone who suffers from chronic dry mouth will likely experience mouth sores, splits at the corners of the mouth, cracked lips, increased plaque buildup & a greater risk of tooth decay & gum disease. You might even start to have nutrition issues, because the lack of saliva makes it more difficult to break down food when you eat.
Even if your dry mouth does not seem to be persistent, it is important to stay on top of treating it. The good news is that treatment is simple for most cases of dry mouth. First, make sure you stay hydrated by sipping on water throughout the day. For your dental & overall health, you should drink lots of water anyway! Dehydration, which dry mouth can be a sign of, is a serious health risk.
Other simple things you can do to treat dry mouth include chewing sugarless gum & limiting the salt, sugar & caffeinated drinks in your diet. Some people might recommend sucking on an ice cube or sugarless hard candy, but this can actually damage your teeth, so dont do it! You can also purchase nonprescription saliva substitutes over the counter to reduce your current issues.
If you use tobacco or drink alcohol, cut back on those or find a way to quit. Even if you dont think smoking or drinking is the root cause, those activities can irritate a dry mouth, so you should limit or stop them entirely. Plus, theyre just bad for you!
The best treatment for dry mouth always depends on the specific cause, so if home remedies or over-the-counter solutions dont prevent your dry mouth, it can indicate a more serious underlying health issue. In serious cases it is best to visit a physician or dentist who can work with you to figure out the root cause of your dry mouth & help you treat it.

Dr. Devereux was born in Pennsylvania & moved with his family to Colorado when he was thirteen. He attended the University of Colorado at Boulder & went to dental school at the University of Colorado School of Dentistry. He has lived & practiced dentistry in Honolulu since 1990. Dr. Devereux has been involved in volunteer dentistry through Give Back a Smile, Dentistry for the Disabled, as well as the Aloha Medical Mission. He has been voted by his peers as one of the Top Dentists in Honolulu for the past five years. He spends his free time going to the gym, hiking, golfing or just relaxing with his wife & kids. I have been scared to go to the dentist for 20+ years. Everyone at this place is truly amazing. All of the work I have had to do has been virtually pain free, and I even gave my dentist a hug for taking such good care of me. My anxiety level was through the roof when I went in and I couldn't have written a better experience. My dentist for life.

The staff made this experience so much better than I expected. Dental work is not something I look forward to, and all the staff, from the greeters to insurance adjusters to the doctor and assistant, we're polite, professional, and speedy. I also got a same day appointment for major dental work. I am definitely going back.

Best Dental experience ever and being 60 years old, I've been to many and they were all great too. Best things: early, late, & weekend hours is what led me there. Booking appointment online was so quick, easy, and perfect. The staff is super nice, accomodating and efficient. My glasses fell on the floor of my truck so I couldn't see the iPad forms to fill out so Raven took the time to read and help me. I went in with a toothache, which in the past required a follow up appointment with an oral surgeon. They gave me an estimate with my dental insurance and explained it clearly ib advance. Dr Inoue took care of my problem tooth immediately, so efficient, clear, fast and pain free. I didn't even take ibuprofen afterwards. They booked me a cleaning appointment, with there extended hours, I'll never have to take time off from work, nor miss appointments. Their location is perfect and they validate parking although I parked outside due to my high truck, they also pre explained the parking garage height when I called. Our family doctor is retiring this month, so we now have a perfect 1 stop shop for our dental needs. MAHALO Ala Moana Dental Care!

SUCH an amazing dentist. Affordable pricing, quick scheduling and every single person who works here is beyond nice. They greet you with a smile and you can tell they love their jobs. I'd recommend Ala Moana Dental Care for everyone but especially for those that suffer with dental anxiety, they put you to ease, don't judge, and are amazing at their jobs so your not sitting in that chair forever. Will continue to come here until my smile is complete again!

Let me just say these people are absolutely amazing, called with a dental emergency at approximately 8:30 am and was being treated by 10:30! Everyone from the front desk to the dental hygienist and the Dr. was beyond great. I would 110% go back. They made a very bad situation a lot better! Thanks a million!!!!

I have to say Ala Moana Dental Care may very well be one of the best dentist offices I have ever had the pleasure of using. They got me in on a Saturday to take care of an Emergency Root Canal with only 3 hours notice! The Dental Assistant Diana was very professional, extremely knowledgeable, and very comforting. Dr Nguyen was amazing, he worked quickly but was very thorough and was sure to check everything was going perfectly as he went along. They even text me shortly after I left to check on me and gave me a number to call with any questions or concerns. Amazing! I highly recommend this office to anyone needing dental work done.

Dr. Komenaka and his staff were wonderful. I had an old crown replaced. It went so smoothly. I couldn't believe it. in the past in California , my temporary crowns would come off, and I'd have to return to the dentist to have them replaced, or even remade. Pretty fishy from the start for a dental office to have this many reviews, let alone most of them be 5 stars. This office is 100% a scam, don't even bother. I went in several months ago for a consultation. The office was filthy and smelt like a public restroom. I had problems with a cavity and every single person told me it was my wisdom teeth. I insisted they were incorrect and they told me they couldn't do an xray bc the xray machine was broken... another red flag. So they shoved a bunch of stuff in my mouth and took different "X-rays" to confirm to me that it was indeed my wisdoms and that I should get ALL OF THEM taken out that day. No pre scheduling, no nothing. So screw if I had work or drove myself there right? They wanted me to make the decision right then and there. I started getting suspicious bc I still had cavity pain. I said to take a look at it again and guess what! All of a sudden they find a cavity! Which would've been another several hundred dollar charge for that day. Realizing this place was definitely a scam I paid my copay for my consultation and left to go to a different clinic who was MUCH MORE HONEST and helpful with the actual issue I had. Had my cavity fixed elsewhere with no issue. Months later I get a letter in the mail saying I owed Ala Moana dental money.. for what? When I paid my copay? I spoke to someone in the phone who gave me a run around and could'nt give me a clear answer as to why I had this charge. I leave it alone thinking it was a mistake because I was not going to pay for a service I did not have. A few months go by again and I get another letter in the mail saying the charge has almost DOUBLED??? FOR WHAT?! they provide me an itemized bill for a bunch of stuff I didn't get. + a ton of interest. I try paying online bc I'm over their scams and drama and they say I need to call them and verify myself. What??? Absolutely insane. DO NOT GO HERE, they will scam and harass you non stop until they get what they want. Gross.

It's okay. I have serious concerns about this place. 1. No conversation with the patient. I felt disrespected. I felt like I'm shopping in a grocery store. In fact, cashiers in my grocery store asking me how my day is. 2. They have a policy that you have to pay out of pocket at the beginning when you make an appointment. This is the first time I witnessed this. 3. Each time you will see a different dentist. I never saw the same dentist in the last three years.

I woke up in the middle of the night in severe pain. I knew I had to bite the bullet and go to the dentist. A friend recommended and I called. The receptionist was super sweet, got me in on a Saturday last minute and Dr. Nguyen had me fixed up in no time. I had a severe phobia of dentists, but everyone helped ease my anxiety. I will be going back for my preventative care from now on!
