Dr. Paul Michels graduated with honors from the University of Southern California School Of Dentistry in 2009. Dr. Michels currently heads Affinity Dental of La Mesa in San Diego, CA, where he works alongside his father Dr. Alan G. Michels DDS. The Michels’ strive to create a relaxed environment where everyone is treated like family

Dr. Michels has an extraordinary passion for dentistry and works hard to educate his patients regarding their oral health so they can make their own educated decisions. His approach to your treatment starts with patiently listening to you. Then, after a complete and thorough examination, a personalized treatment plan is prepared

Dr. Michels is licensed to perform conscious oral sedation for patients who suffer from dental anxiety so you can have all your dental problems addressed at one time in a calm, relaxing environment. Although he offers a wide variety of treatment options ranging from routine cleanings to complex oral surgeries, Dr. Michels primary focus is cosmetic and implant dentistry

Following graduation from UCLA, and dental school at USC, I practiced dentistry for a decade, and then co-founded the first pre-paid dental plan, Safeguard Health Plans, which became a publicly-traded company. My wife and I have been married for more than 50 years, and have eight children, and 27 grandchildren. My priority in life has always been my family, and my values center around integrity and kindness. I’ve always conducted myself with those guiding principles in mind, and I am proud to say that my children have done the same. Our dental office will treat you like family

Native San Diegan Dr. Mark Olson already knew from the age of five that he wanted to be a dentist like his dad. With an accomplished dental practice spanning nearly five decades, Mark’s father frequently brought his young son to the office to “help” and to meet his patients. Mark also had the opportunity to travel the world with the family while the elder Dr. Olson volunteered his dental services in clinics in underserved remote countries

Following graduation from Christian High School in El Cajon, Mark went on to study at Point Loma College in San Diego, obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry. His drive and passion to earn his dental degree brought him to the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco

Dr. Olson is an active member of the American Dental Association, California Dental Association, and the San Diego County Dental Society and continually upgrades his dental skills and knowledge by attending state and national dental conferences annually

Dr. Jestina Benson earned her Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Howard UniversityCollege of Dentistry. She furthered her training with a residency in Advanced General Dentistry at the University of Maryland and is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry. After working in Maryland for several years, Dr. Benson relocated to San Diego for its beautiful sunshine

Dr. Benson provides a wide range of restorative, cosmetic and preventive dental services to patients of all ages. She believes that dentists can make the world a better place one smile at a time and her goal is to improve patient health, appearance, and self-confidence in a gentle, honest, and compassionate manner. Outside of the office, Dr. Benson enjoys traveling and quality time with family and friends

They are nice and prompt but I would get a second opinion because some things they suggest might not be a problem. No sense in crowning teeth that are ok.

The Dr ( aka butcher ) performed a procedure that he never should have, did a poor job at it, and then caused me to need thousands of dollars of extra pair, No one at Affiniry cares, they turned my life upside down and ruined my front teeth

I've been coming here on and off for 8 years. I had 2 root canals with crowns and 3 dental implants done with Affinity dental. I had some not so great experiences because of my teeth but every time I went there, Kathy, Carmen, and Michelle have been amazing. I know as a patient, I can be overwhelming but they were always kind, caring, and patient with me. Dr. Paul Michael has a great team. & Dr. Michael is also amazing. Thank you for always seeing me when I have an emergency.

Dr Michels is an extremely competent dentist. I have been a patient for about four years and I trust him, which is saying a lot for me! I am a coward, but he practices pain free dental care. I find the staff professional and eager to make me comfortable. I highly recommend Affinity Dental.

It had been a few years since I had seen a dentist. I went to Affinity and they made me feel right at home. He told me what needed to be done and what could wait. I've been to other dentists in the area but this has to be the best dentist in La Mesa.

So far this is the best experience I've ever had with a dentist. The entire team here is awesome! I have nothing but positive things to say about Affinity. This is the best dentist in La Mesa by far.

If I could give zero starts I would. My experience at Cardinal Dental was horrible. I went in and Dr. Benson told me I needed five crowns. I had three done the first round which were my top molars on both sides. I got the permanent crowns on December 14 and today...February 18 they are still extremely sensitive to cold and hot and very painful when I bite down. I can't even chew on either side without it hurting! So I decided to get a second opinion today. New, trustworthy, dentist today said she could only see that one of the crowns was absolutely necessary and one of them should have had a root canal before the crown was put on. She looked at the bottom two molars that they said needed crowns and told me that she could fix them with fillings which will cost me $36 as opposed to the $1990 that Cardinal was going to charge me for the crowns. DO NOT go to this dental office. They are ONLY in it for the money and will do completely unnecessary work so they can drive up the cost.

I've been going there for years and I've never had a bad experience. It's hard to find a dentist to trust. I moved to downtown but still head to La Mesa to see them because I feel very comfortable there. I've never had a surprise bill, I've been able to make appointments, and the staff are gentle (because I am a total wimp when it comes to dental work). I highly recommend them.

Best dentist I've had in at least 2 decades, possibly the best ever. The staff is friendly, informative, patient and EFFICIENT! I have nothing bad to say about them. great experience, every time. The cleaning is quick but thorough, the repair they did on a tooth years ago remains undetectable and flawless, the office is updated and modern....I will never look for another dentist again. Talk about peace of mind! Thank you!

The office staff is professional, the front desk ladies are welcoming, and the office itself is clean and beautiful, but... My last couple of visits there were very disappointing. I came in there for a cleaning and checkup. Dr. Michaels was very nice. He told me that my teeth were good and that I did not need anything besides a regular cleaning which I was about to get. The hygienist, however, was rude. She was lecturing me on how to brush and floss as if I was a ten-year-old and tried to set me up for a deep cleaning I did not need. Next time I took my daughter there, again for cleaning and a consult. I knew that my daughter needed a filling and a crown. She saw a different doctor. This time it was a young female; unfortunately, I don't remember her name. She said my daughter needed a crown instead of a filling, and an implant instead of a crown. Her assistant was trying to scare us into buying what we did not need, again. She was telling my daughter, who was 18 at the time, horror stories about receding gums and crowns falling out. All that in an effort to upsell. I decided to get a second opinion, and I am glad I did. I really liked that office in the past. I have been taking my kids there for many years. But all their staff and doctors changed and their values and ethics are not the same any more. I will be looking for a different dentist.

I don't know where to begin because there are so many issues with this dental office. Let's start with the receptionist: extremely unprofessional, rude, not knowledgeable of front end receptionist procedures. If you are not medically training don't attempt to give me dental advice but be familiar with insurance protocols! Doctors vs Hygienist: If I have a toothache they can get me in with a doctor to reccomend a few crowns or a root canal that will cost a $1,000+ within a day or two with no problem. If I want to do routine maintenance with a hygienist to prevent needing $1,000 work-up "ooh no, were booking two months out for cleaning ". I vote for more hygienist to accommodate the high demand of routine maintenance needed! Michels vs Per Diem Doctors: If I am apart of the "Michels Family " and suppose to be treat like so then inform me that one of the "Michels" will not be available the day of my appointment but you have this other GREAT doctor! I previously discussed a whole different care plan with one of The Michels and this float doctor doesnt know what it is! Back-office Medical staff: I have had cavities filled, crowns put on and other work and was never offered to rinse the blood out or particles. I would go into the lobby and spit in the trash can near the water dispenser so I can speak to make my follow up appointment. One day I finally asked the medical assistant in the back where is the old school little spit /mouth rinse dish she said eww that's nasty we dont have those! Normally patient ask to go to the sink! Excuse me I never got the memo those were obsolete! Respect for patients: You call me for a same day hygienist appointment, "oh my lucky stars" I am so grateful. I rearrange my work schedule, ask my boss if I can take my lunch at a certain to make it to my dental appointment. My appointment was booked for 3pm. I clock out at 240pm. I'm in the next building so sign in for my dental appointment at 245pm. 320pm I haven't been called back! The receptionist said, " you haven't been called back yet, you were here before the last family"! I was livid, you wasted my time and energy! I left without my cleaning that is a year overdue. Over due because this office has no respect for their patients time. This is the third time this has happened to me and I had to cancel because my time was irrelevant to them!

Okay so this is place is definitely in the top for me. Dentist are scary even if you take 100% great care of your teeth. I had a eating disorder growing up that had destroyed my 6 front teeth. They were becoming see through on the bottoms and you could see the dentin part receding. It affected my talking to potential jobs and just made me become extremely introverted. I'm applying to nursing school in September and I knew if I didn't fix my teeth I wasn't going to cut it through classes and progressing in my career. So we took the plunge and went to dr. Michaels. He was extremely up front about everything. He was honest, took the time to answer questions and was very caring. The hygienist were amazing and the front desk ladies are very helpful. I made the appointment for 2 weeks later and saved my money. Day of appointment: they put me in a calming room, were extremely caring and attentive and helped keep me calm through everything. I got all 6 front teeth caped. I had temporaries put on that no one could tell were fake. ( temporary teeth suck so bad but it's only temporary and it does get better) lived off mortrin and smoothies for a week. I had the dental hygienist Michelle that put them on and she took her time making sure my bite was perfect. Nothing worst than hitting teeth when you're numb. Last appointment: go back in for my permanent set. My goodness my gums are killing me but they got the temporary out fast and once again Michelle took her time with me and made sure everything was perfect for me. She even offered to put on temporary glue so I could make sure if the color was right. ( I didn't; the color was perfect already) So here's what you need to take from my experience I paid $3259.00 for 6 front teeth to be capped. I have Dental insurance but this is considered cosmetic. The worst part is hearing the noise as they grind the teeth for placement ( you're numb it's just so loud) but as of now I feel like I can finally take my life back. I can finally accept that I've truly healed from my eating issues because this closed the book on having to see the reminders each time I would smile before. I'm so happy to finally have some of my life back. You don't realize how much of your personality sits right in your smile. 100% would do it over again if given the chance.

Be careful when you let them do a filling on your teeth. They said I had a slight amount of decay between my molars located on one tooth. Next thing I know after prep for a filling and while looking in a mirror, I see half of my molar has been shaved down including most of the crown. That's not hyperbole. I feel like my tooth is ruined. My other dentist shaved down minimal tooth while performing a filling. Why was this necessary? Also dental work is broken up into too many appointments. Nice looking office though, too bad the product isn't up to par.

Very disappointed that I went in with a major tooth ache and requested more than once to be given something to help with the pain. They did nothing including the doctor who disregarded my request. Now several hours after my appointment, I'm still miserable waiting on a prescription. Poor customer service!

Good work when you can get in. They seem to be incapable of making an appointment online. I receive e-mail reminders, request dates, and never hear anything back.
